Chapter 08: Blood Elf and Dragon Mercenary Group (2)
Led by the Guard Commander, Andrew arrived at a corner of the adventurer hall.
It was a peculiar protrusion, resembling a hemisphere. The adventurer hall was filled with counters, bulletin boards, elevated platforms for bounties and various events, all in an open-air setup that seemed exceedingly bustling. Andrew, despite having visited so many times, had never noticed this strange protrusion before.
Moving to the back, a staircase leading underground appeared in front of Andrew, with two guards stationed at the entrance.
The Guard Commander descended the stairs directly, but Andrew paused his steps.
"What's wrong, sir?" the Guard Commander turned back to ask.
Glancing around, Andrew casually replied, "It's nothing, just a bit surprised that the adventurer hall has a lower level."
"Of course it does, otherwise where would clients negotiate tasks?"
"Negotiate tasks?"
"What kind of task to issue, how much reward to provide—these matters need someone to assist them. Otherwise, the clients wouldn't know what to do."
Andrew suddenly understood and uttered an "Oh."
Linlopes' adventurer guild was indeed far more developed than those in the south. Such a sophisticated industry naturally needed an efficient support system. After all, with so many daily tasks, it wouldn't make sense for them to randomly appear in adventurers' hands, nor could the adventurer hall merely offer credibility assurance and venue provision.
Descending the stairs, Andrew found himself in an underground plaza as expansive as the adventurer hall above. Hanging above was a sign that read: "Task Hall." Unlike the adventurer hall, which was open and public, the task hall was concealed.
Standing on the staircase, Andrew could see the expansive circular area divided into individual compartments. Each compartment was equipped with independent sofas, desks, and uniformed staff receiving customers of all kinds. Most of the staff were human, while the customers belonged to various races, including One-eyed Giants who crouched over and still towered above the walls of the compartments.
At the center of the circular area, a small segment was left open, housing a circular counter. Inside the counter were three uniformed young human women. Judging by the setup, it was likely a consultation desk.
The walls of the vast underground plaza were adorned with mirrored pathways reflecting light, channeling daylight, making the underground area appear almost indistinguishable from the surface.
"Sir, our boss is still waiting for you."
"Alright."
Andrew followed the Guard Commander along a circular staircase that extended downward. At the midway point, they turned onto another staircase leading upward. This staircase led to a room suspended from the dome—yes, suspended from the dome. The room faced the central wall of the task hall, and its entire surface was made of glass. Because the compartments below lacked ceilings, it was unquestionable that from this room, one could clearly observe the actions of everyone within the compartments.
This peculiar design was exceedingly rare in human architecture. Of course, among elves, such designs were far from unusual. Elves were naturally fond of living in treehouses.
At last, the two arrived at the door to the room. Two guards stationed outside extended their hands, not to open the door to the room, but to push open a large door against the adjacent wall. A lively scene suddenly unfolded before Andrew's eyes.
"Task number 000112251071 hasn't received any response yet? The client is extremely anxious and needs us to reply immediately!"
"No, this task can't be handed over to the Red Rose Mercenary Corps. The client expressly does not want their relationship with them to completely sour. The Red Rose Mercenary Corps' tactics are far too ruthless."
"The task involves retrieving fifteen jars, but only thirteen have been recovered so far. Two are missing. These jars come as a set; missing even one renders the collection incomplete. They must retrieve the remaining two! If they fail, they won't earn a single coin in commission!"
"Two mages have gone missing—this is a very serious matter. I believe we need to assign another mercenary group, or else the task is likely to fail."
Countless staff bustled about, speaking and handling a wide array of issues.
This was a hall located on the outer ring. Although it paled in comparison to the adventurer and task halls in scale, it was still quite sizable, featuring over a dozen rows of desks. Staff moved back and forth continuously. Here, there were only staff—no adventurers or clients.
Andrew was stunned. Truly, the scale behind the adventurer hall was beyond his imagination. Even after spending a month here, he had not guessed that so many people were involved in maintaining its operations.
"This way, sir."
Led by the Guard Commander, Andrew took a detour around the area, only to return to the suspended room from earlier—but this time, it was from the opposite side of the glass wall.
What stood before them was a deep brown wooden door, exquisitely crafted at first glance. It was drastically different from the rough and rugged style of the adventurer guild.
The Guard Commander didn't need to knock, as a young woman at a nearby desk promptly approached them.
The Guard Commander introduced, "This is Mr. Duru, the leader of the Blood Elf and Dragon Mercenary Group. The boss instructed me to bring him here as soon as he arrived."
"Hello, Captain Duru." She greeted him with a smile and, lowering her head, opened her notebook. "Our boss is currently occupied, so you'll need to wait a moment. Is that alright?"
