Chapter 24: Lich and Dragon_2
"Turuk! Turuk Akbar!"
"Alright, Turuk Akbar, transform! Mage! I will teach you!"
Turuk seemed to understand, excitedly screaming and hopping around.
Christina also followed with a sweet smile.
"Roar—!"
Just in the midst of this joyful laughter, a dragon's roar echoed from afar.
Andrew turned quickly in fear, his eyes wide open.
...
In the boundless desert, Andrejewitsch coiled in dragon form on the highest rock, raising his head and letting out a series of long cries.
"Roar—! Roar—! Roar—!"
The continuous dragon roars echoed in the night sky, one after another, drifting far away. Apart from this, the world remained utterly silent.
After a while, two glowing points appeared on the western horizon. They were two other gold dragons.
Andrejewitsch finally stopped his long calls, turning his head to quietly wait.
Soon, two gold dragons that looked even more robust and larger than him appeared before him, flapping their huge wings suspended in the air.
"Haven't you found her yet?"
"No, but I'm confident she's nearby."
"What makes you so sure she's nearby?"
"Gold coins." Andrejewitsch extended a claw, revealing some gold coins wrapped in tattered burlap, "Some of these are from her treasure, hidden with dragon language magic. If I'm not mistaken, they were buried only yesterday. She doesn't know how to cover the traces, so I found them."
"You say some of these belong to her treasure. What about the others?"
"Uh..."
"You're not telling me that all this time, while searching for her, you managed to earn some coins, are you?"
"It wasn't... it's just that I ran into some trouble. Of course, the trouble has been resolved. This is the compensation they gave me."
The two gold dragons stared coldly.
Andrejewitsch's head drooped to the ground.
After a moment's silence, one of the gold dragons said, "Your execution of this mission has been abysmal, deeply disappointing. All I can say to you is this. Do you know her approximate location?"
"Not... not exactly, but I'm sure she's nearby. She's not daring to transform into a dragon, as that would make it too easy for us to find her. So... so she should be operating in human form."
"You haven't considered that being in dragon form also makes it easy for her to find you? You're calling us here, and now the whole desert probably knows there's a gold dragon here! Do you think you're hunting?"
This remark stunned Andrejewitsch, making him feel even more ashamed.
"Start searching, remember to hide your forms. Otherwise, we may never find her," said one gold dragon to the other.
"Yeah."
In the desert, three gold dragons spread their wings, flying in three different directions.
Andrew and Christina were only five kilometers away, able to clearly see their silhouettes. However, soon, all three silhouettes disappeared from the night sky. They didn't fly away; they vanished right where they were.
Andrew, hiding behind the rocks and watching secretly, widened his eyes: "They hid?"
"What should we do?" Christina asked in a panic.
*Leaning against the rock, Andrew's eyes flickered, unsure of how to respond. Sweating on his forehead.*
*Invisible enemies are the scariest. You don't even know if they've left or are watching you from nearby. Any movement could expose you.*
After thinking for a moment, Andrew grabbed Christina and ran towards the nearby Oasis, turning back after a few steps to bring the still-stunned Turuk along.
Making sure they were hidden in the grass of the Oasis, Andrew sneaked out again to fetch the two horses and brought them into the Oasis.
"We can only wait now, wait for some time, until they can't find us and leave, then we'll leave here."
"Will they find us?" Christina asked.
Hesitating, Andrew replied, "I don't know."
*Yes, he truly didn't know. And now they couldn't even leave this Oasis.*
*Dragons flying in the sky have excellent vision. As long as you act under their watchful eyes, two people alone in the wilderness would be hard to miss. The problem is, you don't know if they're above you.*
*And if they really land and search inch by inch, then... no matter where you hide, you won't escape. Dragons possess powerful sensing abilities. Andrew was fine, as his appearance changed, his aura changed, but Christina...*
*The escape suddenly became more dull. They could only hide quietly in the Oasis, not daring to show themselves or speak loudly. The only consolation was that there was water here and enough dry food.* Would they search a water-rich Oasis thoroughly?
*Andrew silently prayed they wouldn't think of that.*
Time ticked away bit by bit.
Just to be on the safe side, Andrew hid Christina in the lake.
*To be honest, dragons are truly powerful. Even without any magic, she didn't need air much, she could hide in the lake water indefinitely, only occasionally coming up.*
As for Andrew and the little beastman?
They weren't even on the gold dragons' pursuit list. It was fine for them to be active on the ground. But it was best not to attract the dragons' attention; otherwise, leading the dragons to Christina, would spell doom for all.
To make their presence appear more reasonable, Andrew even pretended to start building a house not far from the Oasis. Of course, it was all for show. His full attention was on the gold dragons' movements, even though he could see nothing and hear nothing.
*Invisible enemies, camouflage. This feeling was really awful, extremely awful. Yet, it seemed the only way.*
Andrew pretended to be settling down here, pretending to chop wood, repair bricks. Christina remained underwater. They could only meet one or two hours every evening, when Christina surfaced for air.
Two days, full two days passed, with no movements around, no gold dragons, no dragon roars. The wasteland only offered scattered stones, wild winds, glaring sun. And at night, the wolves, the lizards emerging from the unknown caves.
"Have they left?"
"I don't know, but I think we should wait. Wait two more days, two days. We are only a day's journey from Udoven. If they don't show any signs in two days, we will leave for Udoven."
"Okay." Christina nodded, then dove back into the lake.
Turuk stood by, watching ignorantly. Though ignorant, he likely grasped some notion. Over the past two days, he not only didn't cause trouble but also cooperated well. Clearly, he was a smart beastman.
"Let's go back."
Under the starry night, Andrew once again led Turuk back to their "temporary residence" from the Oasis.
That was under a giant rock, a skewed and drafty space that couldn't be called a cave. After two days of repairs, Andrew had blocked off all the drafts.
Only two hundred meters from the Oasis.
As he walked, Andrew cautiously looked around, vigilant of the surroundings.
*Two days in this manner, he felt he might break down. Perhaps the gold dragons appearing would actually be a better thing, perhaps... If they couldn't recognize Andrew, he might even deceive them for some time, buy some time. Of course, just perhaps. If recognized, then all would be lost.*
As he was halfway there, a voice suddenly sounded behind him.
"Hello, have you seen a dragon?"
Andrew swiftly turned back.
In front of him stood Bruto.
