Chapter 75: Power of the Haircut
"And you became Street Jester. Our Goddess sure has a discreet naming sense, I must say."
Kael said with a wry smile.
"I told a secret, and now, can you tell me your class name? I was able to tell immediately once you returned that you advanced to the second level."
Willow asked.
"…Half-Criminal."
Kael scratched the back of his head.
"You must've done something bad then."
Willow said.
"Yeah. I would say that what I did was worse than you. I killed someone."
Kael said without keeping it secret.
"…There must be a story behind that; otherwise, the Goddess would've just given you the class of Criminal or Murderer. However, you became Half-Criminal."
Willow said with a thoughtful look.
They were walking the cobblestone road, going through the under-construction site of Orion Street.
"…Yeah. I am not the biggest fan of my current class."
Kael said.
"Why?"
Willow asked curiously.
"Whenever you're half of something, it means that you half-assed it. You can't really excel in anything if you're only giving half effort.
"I would've actually preferred just to be Criminal, but I know this is the Goddess's way of saying to go all-out or don't bother at all."
Kael said, then stopped in his tracks and looked towards the barber shop of the Kind Agatha.
She was there, with the scissors, snipping away at a customer's hair.
"You're looking for a haircut?"
Willow asked and looked at Kael's black hair, which didn't really seem overgrown to her just yet, but it could be considered long for a young man.
His hair was going over his ears, falling over his forehead slightly, and reaching the back of his nape with its thick, dark waves.
"To pretend, I must look the part. Like you did as Street Jester. You put on that ridiculous outfit and the face paint to play the part.
"What about me? I've got to look the part too."
Kael said, opened the door to the barber shop, and entered.
"Welcome~"
Kind Agatha said, and then saw Willow, which made her smile, and saw Kael taking a seat in one of the empty chairs.
She finished cutting the hair of the customer and moved behind Kael, looking at his reflection through the mirror in front of him.
"Mister, what kind of haircut would you like?"
She asked.
"Medium length, and trim the sides."
Kael said, and then put the cape around him and leaned back against the chair while Kind Agatha went to work.
Willow watched as the young man slowly had a complete transformation before her innocent, young eyes.
The transformation lasted about twenty minutes, and once Kind Agatha was done, she removed the cape from around Kael's shoulders and put it away.
"Done~"
Kael looked at himself in the mirror.
The top of his head was short, maybe 1 to 2 inches long, enough to show texture but not long enough to fall flat or messy.
The sides had a clean and tight fade, done with clippers, and it started low from near his ears and blended upwards. It framed his face with sharpness.
It looked like the top of his hair was finger-styled, which looked nice, and overall, the haircut did wonders for his overall appearance.
No more did he look like a student, but rather a mercenary or professional. It was much easier to imagine him as Outlaw.
Without even doing anything, Kael could feel his divinity having a slight spike, and the divinity pool inside his mind began to swirl and grew bigger.
"Thank you."
Kael paid the kind lady for the haircut and then stepped out of the barber shop into the warm air of the summer.
"I never expected a haircut to make such a big difference. Your pretending will definitely be more effective from now on."
Willow said with a smile as she skipped behind him.
"Heh~"
Kael smiled—a fake smile of pretending—and he looked much more charming now that his unruly hair was finally trimmed.
"I am starting to get used to this world. I still have plenty to learn, but I am getting here."
He checked the timepiece, saw that it was still early in the morning, and knew they still had a little bit of time before Mister Armand's shooting lessons.
They went to get some Whitesky special coffee, with its rich, bold flavor, but it was also pretty bitter, so Kael had to put four sugar packets in it.
Only then was it sweet enough for him to drink.
…
Dark Jewel's Corner, School of Divinity and Mysticism, the Backyard Forest.
A stuffed doll came swinging from over a tree with a fake wooden sword in hand, and it came swinging towards Kael.
Kael rolled out of the way, put both his hands on the black revolver, and pulled the trigger three times.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The bullets whistled through the air and stabbed into the back of the stuffed doll, making it explode into a puff of cotton.
"Whew…"
Kael wiped the sweat off his forehead and slid his revolver into his holster.
"Not bad."
Armand said while sitting on a heavy branch of a tree, and it almost seemed like he was going to clap but stopped at the last moment.
"Thanks…"
Kael rose to his feet.
"You've been learning quickly. You must be practicing outside school hours, yes?"
Armand asked.
"Yeah…"
Kael said without mentioning that his practice usually came in the form of fighting someone, and he added another mental note to increase his training.
While he could come to the Backyard Forest to train, he couldn't do that too late, as the constant gunshot sounds were loud.
'Realm Between it is. I will most likely be all alone besides on Sundays, so I can go there and train as much as I want.'
Armand nodded, jumped out of the tree, and walked away to give some guidance to Willow, who was practicing in another part of the forest.
Crack!
At that moment, Kael heard a twig get crushed under a boot, and then saw Jeff Quinn walk from over the school mansion.
He didn't look as pale and sickly as before.
"Yo…"
Jeff greeted with a wave of his hand and looked surprised briefly at Kael's new look that his haircut caused.
"Jeff, why are you here? You have swordsmanship class with Mister Jeremiah, don't you?!
Kael asked.
"I told him that I was going to empty my bladder. I came here because I really need to talk with you."
Jeff said with a serious look.
"…"
Kael nodded, looked at where Armand walked, and then took Jeff in a completely different direction to give them some privacy in case Armand returned.
