THE SHADOW BOUND CROWN

Chapter 27: Second date and counting

The night air was filled with the murmur of countless voices as Lysara and her companions trotted slowly toward the market square. The grand festival in honor of the kingdom's founder was in full swing, and the narrow streets leading to the square were choked with excited townsfolk. The trio had no choice but to slow their pace, walking in close proximity to avoid losing each other amidst the shifting sea of bodies. Lysara found herself shoulder to shoulder with Aurelia, the occasional brush of their arms sending an electric awareness through her. She kept her face neutral, though she could feel the heat rising to her ears. Aurelia, on the other hand, seemed completely unbothered, though a faint red rosiness plagued her cheeks. Laurien, lost in his own thoughts, barely noticed their proximity.

Meanwhile, miles away in another part of the kingdom, Evelyne was beginning her second day in the company of Caelum.

Her morning had started with a polite knock on her chamber door. When she answered, she found Caelum standing there, dressed impeccably in a finely embroidered tunic, his usual confident smile in place.

"Good morning, Princess Evelyne," he greeted smoothly, offering his hand. "I have prepared something special for today."

Evelyne hesitated for a fraction of a second before taking his hand lightly, her mind already bracing itself for whatever extravagant display he had planned. The moment she stepped outside, she was met with the sight of a magnificent white stallion saddled and waiting.

"A ride?" she asked, arching a delicate brow.

"A private tour," Caelum corrected with a grin, helping her onto the horse before swinging up behind her. "I hope you don't mind the proximity."

Evelyne said nothing, merely adjusting her posture to keep a polite distance. The horse trotted smoothly through the quiet cobbled streets, the morning still young enough that most of the nobility were just beginning to stir. As they rode past courtyards and gardens, Evelyne observed their surroundings with quiet curiosity. It wasn't long before they arrived at their destination—a grand, high-rise establishment nestled within the kingdom's court.

She recognized the hotel immediately. It was known for its exclusivity, a place where only the highest of nobility could dine. Yet, as they entered, she noticed the halls and dining areas were eerily empty.

She turned to Caelum, her expression unreadable. "It's… quiet."

"That's because I bought out the entire place for our morning together," he said with clear satisfaction. "No distractions, just us."

Evelyne gave him a polite smile and nod, though inwardly, she sighed. Excessive displays of wealth were nothing new to her, but the lengths to which he went to impress her bordered on ostentatious.

They were escorted to a lavish table near a grand window that overlooked the cityscape. The view was breathtaking, but Evelyne barely had time to appreciate it before a team of highly skilled chefs arrived, presenting them with a decadent array of dishes. Everything had been meticulously chosen—the finest foods from their kingdom and delicacies imported from beyond their borders.

As they ate, Caelum barely touched his food, instead using the opportunity to engage her in conversation. "Tell me, Princess Evelyne," he began, leaning slightly forward, "what are your interests? What makes you… you?"

Evelyne, who had just taken a delicate sip of her tea, set her cup down and smiled demurely. "That's quite a broad question. Why don't you tell me about yourself instead?"

Caelum's eyes lit up at the invitation, and just as she predicted, he took the opportunity to speak at length about himself. He detailed his upbringing, his victories in court politics, and the endless expectations placed upon him. Evelyne listened patiently, offering occasional nods and small, polite responses where necessary, but her mind wandered as he continued talking.

She was no stranger to men like Caelum. He was charming, certainly, but there was an undeniable arrogance in his words, an assumption that his life and accomplishments were of the utmost importance. He spoke of everything as if he were narrating a grand tale in which he was the hero, and while Evelyne was skilled in the art of courtly conversation, even she found it exhausting.

After what felt like an eternity of self-praise, Caelum finally set his utensils down with a satisfied sigh. "I must say, it's refreshing to have someone who actually listens," he mused. "Most people interrupt or try to shift the focus away from me."

Evelyne simply smiled, hiding her true thoughts behind an elegant mask of amusement. "Perhaps they wish to be heard as well."

Caelum chuckled as if the notion was an amusing joke. "Perhaps."

With their meal concluded, he rose from his seat and extended a hand to her once more. "I have one more surprise for you."

Evelyne accepted his hand out of politeness, allowing him to lead her down the hall and outside to a private jewelry boutique. The moment she saw the gleaming gemstones in the windows, she already knew where this was going.

"This isn't necessary, Lord Caelum," she said immediately. "Our situation is delicate, and such gifts would only complicate things."

"Nonsense," Caelum dismissed with a wave of his hand. "A token of admiration is hardly a complication. It's simply a gesture."

Without waiting for further argument, he stepped into the shop and perused the vast collection of extravagant pieces. He eventually selected a necklace adorned with the finest rubies and diamonds, its craftsmanship flawless. Without hesitation, he turned and placed it in her hands.

"For you," he said, his voice brimming with confidence. "A reminder of today."

Evelyne hesitated, eyeing the exquisite piece in her hands. She could feel the weight of his expectations pressing down on her. She knew that if she accepted it, she would be sending a message—one she wasn't sure she wanted to send.

Still, rejecting it outright in front of him would be a bold move, one that could create an unnecessary stir.

So, with the grace expected of a princess, she lifted her gaze to his and gave him the same poised, unreadable smile she had worn all morning. "It is beautiful."

It was neither acceptance nor rejection, and Caelum, caught in his own delight, took it as a victory.

As the day continued, Evelyne remained as poised as ever, but deep down, she knew—this was only the beginning of a careful and delicate dance between expectations and her own desires.
