Chapter 379: Chapter 379: Kuzan and Bullet
"Good morning, Captain Clapp…"
"Your boy Kuma is so diligent! Early this morning I saw him running around the coastline with a big rock in his arms!"
Totto Land Kingdom – Loving Island, at the Port
A resident of the Longarm Tribe pedaled by on a bicycle, warmly greeting a tall, square-faced man in a military uniform who was patrolling the area with a squad of armed soldiers. The local showed no trace of fear toward the stern-looking, gun-toting soldiers, and in fact saluted them as he passed.
"Good morning, Brother Ras…"
Captain Clapp, likewise smiling and waving, responded with a hearty laugh, looking quite proud:
"That kid's been determined from a young age to become as strong as Cyril Oka-sama! He's always been self-disciplined, trains diligently every day, and never needs me to push him!"
"Is it true that Oka-sama noticed him and took him on as a disciple? Gosh, I'm so envious," the Longarm local said, full of admiration. "If my son were even half as good as your Kuma, I'd be grinning in my sleep!"
Being recognized by a figure of such stature all but guaranteed that the child's future prospects would be extraordinary.
"Yes, just a month ago Oka-sama accepted him as a disciple!"
Clapp looked visibly delighted.
He never dreamed he would have such a life. Nine years earlier, when his son Bartholomew Kuma was born, it was discovered in the hospital that Clapp and his family were of the Buccaneers Tribe (their unique blood type gave them away). The information was leaked, drawing the attention of the World Government, which ordered them arrested and sent to Mary Geoise as slaves. It felt like their world was collapsing.
But at the critical moment, the Hell Trading Company under the Fallen Angel Pirates rescued the three of them from the CP agents, then escorted them to Totto Land. There, they met "Thunder Calamity" Cyril Oka, who was also a Buccaneers tribesman. Through Oka's arrangements, they settled on this island. Clapp, in order to protect his family and earn a living, joined the Fallen Angel Pirates' army. With persistent training and decent natural ability, he advanced rapidly, soon impressing his superiors in the Army's competitions and earning a place at the Royal Military Academy on Cake Island. A year later, he graduated with excellent marks and was promoted to Captain.
Five years back, when the Fallen Angel Pirates officially reorganized and introduced a rank system, Clapp—having mastered the "Six Styles" (Rokushiki) and Armament Haki—was made a One-Star Brigadier General. Over the years, with constant effort and repeated naval expeditions, he left behind his timid former self. Now he had far greater strength, was proficient in the Six Styles, and was adept with two forms of Haki. Having repeatedly distinguished himself in battle, he was promoted to a Three-Star Lieutenant General just a year ago, becoming one of the Seventy-Two Pillars, and was assigned as the Security Captain of Loving Island.
"Congratulations, Captain Clapp!"
"Captain, I heard not only Oka-sama, but also Afar-sama Fire and Irene-sama (Wind) have each taken on a disciple—and they're all about the same age! There's a rumor the three of them made a bet to see whose pupil will be strongest in the future. And supposedly all these kids were brought back by the Hell Trading Company from outside Totto Land; they each have huge potential!"
Hearing this, several Totto Land Kingdom soldiers approached, each chiming in with a grin.
"Is that so?"
Clapp raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. Still, he had confidence in his son, Kuma. Though the Buccaneers Tribe might not match the "Race of Gods" atop Totto Land's hierarchy, they typically possessed physiques comparable to giants—suggesting they might share some giant lineage. This gave them considerable innate strength. He himself was hardly a genius, yet look what he'd achieved. Kuma, who was far smarter, had every chance of surpassing him.
…
"What?"
"A wager?"
"Apprentices?"
Up on Atlantis in Totto Land's skies, upon hearing Sally's account, Linlin, Gerd, Lillian, and the others showed astonishment.
"I hear that a month ago, Thunder Calamity Cyril Oka took in a Buccaneers Tribe boy named Bartholomew Kuma," said El, already aware from reports, arms folded and smiling faintly. "He bragged about it in front of the other two, so Fire Calamity Afar and Wind Calamity Irene felt challenged; each decided to take in their own disciples for training. And apparently, they've placed a pretty big wager on whose disciple will end up stronger."
Initially, hearing news from Wind Calamity Irene that these "Three Calamities" wanted a wager left El somewhat bemused. But Irene had admitted she was worried because Oka and Afar had already recruited their pupils, yet she still lacked a candidate. Considering Irene was his woman, El recommended a candidate who would let her "win by default."
"So those three have nothing better to do?" Herd said in mild exasperation.
"I've been told Fire Calamity Afar was going to present his own son, Abel, in the contest," Sally laughed, "but then Oka and Irene both objected that it might as well be a contest among their own children. So Afar had to pick someone else. A few days ago on Ice Island, he recruited a young boy named 'Kuzan.' Meanwhile, because Irene's pregnant and resting on Ice Island, she just took a disciple called 'Bullet.'"
"If they were chosen by those three, they can't be simple nobodies," said Lillian, the pregnant and radiant Three-Eye Tribe beauty. "Any intel on these three kids?"
"The Buccaneers boy is Bartholomew Kuma, age nine," Sally replied with a smile. "His father, Bartholomew Clapp—nicknamed 'the Giant Man'—is now one of the Seventy-Two Pillars, serving as the security chief on Loving Island. That boy named 'Kuzan,' age eleven, is an orphan from the Vespa Kingdom in the South Blue, brought back by the Hell Trading Company two years ago. As for 'Bullet,' he's only seven, and was personally retrieved by El-sama half a year ago from the 'Nation of Never-Ending War.'"
"Ah, from the Nation of Never-Ending War?"
"I recall something about that. Indeed, that child's talent was pretty impressive," Lillian mused.
