Chapter 62: Bloodlust by the River
" So this is your friend's house, huh? " Kojou said, gazing at the three-story home standing by the riverbank near Tokonosu Airport. " I have to admit, this woman named Rika is anything but ordinary. "
Kojou was certain Rika wasn't just some regular soldier in the army. It was obvious that no ordinary soldier could afford an apartment this large, especially near an international airport where prices must have been astronomical — far beyond the reach of a common servicemember.
" Well, to be honest, I don't know much about Rika-chan's job, " Shizuka said, placing a hand on her chin in thought. Rika never liked to talk much about her work, and Shizuka wasn't the nosy type, so she had never pressed her for details. But with Kojou bringing it up, Shizuka couldn't help but think about her friend's line of work. After all, Rika kept a large number of firearms in her home — something highly illegal in Japan.
" I don't think Rika-san's job is all that important right now. What we need is some rest, especially since we're all exhausted from everything that's happened, " Rei said, rubbing her shoulder with a pained expression. She had been swinging a spear-like staff since the madness began, and after nearly half a day, even with her well-trained body, every muscle ached.
" Now that you mention it, a warm meal might be a good idea after all that, " Saeko added, eyeing Shizuka. " Marikawa-sensei, do you have a key to this apartment, or are we going to have to climb in through the second-floor windows? "
Grrrru*
At the mere mention of food, Akame's stomach let out a loud growl, reminding everyone of just how hungry she was.
" Food… " Akame mumbled in a flat tone, though the gleam in her eyes betrayed her love for eating. Clearly a food lover, she had snacked on plenty of treats on the bus, but they had done nothing to quell her hunger.
" Shall we go in… " Shizuka said with a gentle smile as she pulled a key from beneath the doormat in front of the door — an absurdly cliché place to hide house keys, yet in this catastrophe, no one had apparently thought to take it.
" Finally, a proper bath and some real food, " Saya grumbled as she quickly followed Shizuka inside. She could hardly wait to shower and change out of the zombie-blood-stained clothes she had been wearing.
" It's going to take some time to prepare a meal, so in the meantime I'll clear out the zombies nearby and grab some supplies from the small shop down the street, " Kojou said after a moment's silence. His thirst for blood had grown to the point where suppressing it any longer would cause him to lose control — better to release a little of it on the zombies.
Kojou was the Fourth Primogenitor, the most powerful Vampire ever created, designed to kill the Sinful God Cain. Not only was he unmatched in raw strength, but he also possessed far stronger instincts and desires than any other vampire — an overwhelming thirst for blood and a burning craving for destruction. These were not the only impulses he had been suppressing since becoming the Fourth Primogenitor. As a weapon forged to kill the Sinful God, his killing intent and destructive urge were terrifying, and he had been restraining them for over half a year — including his time in the Campione World. But the more he used his power, the stronger these impulses became.
While he could sate his thirst for blood with Asagi and his other women, he had no outlet for his killing urge. Although he had released a little of it when fighting Heretic Gods in the Campione World, becoming a Campione had only made those urges stronger. And now, with millions of potential targets before his eyes, Kojou intended to unleash all his bloodlust and destructive craving on the zombies.
With this in mind, Kojou planned to leave the group temporarily to slaughter zombies — gaining EXP was just a secondary benefit. The real reason was to defuse the ticking time bomb inside him so he wouldn't harm those close to him upon returning to his own world. At the same time, he didn't want to let his lust for killing take over and annihilate this world, which was already teetering toward ruin. That's why he decided first to build some connections with people here while gradually releasing his killing urge.
" In that case, I'll go with you to gather supplies. I don't know anything about cooking anyway, " Akatsuki said, fixing Kojou with a serious look. As an assassin, she was extremely sensitive to killing intent and had noticed his state for some time. She hadn't said much, though she had been on alert in case he suddenly went on a killing spree.
" … " Kojou had wanted to refuse, but upon seeing Akatsuki's meaningful gaze, he decided to nod silently. It was clear she understood his condition and wouldn't take no for an answer.
" In that case, I'll go too, " Takashi suddenly said. It was obvious he felt a sense of inadequacy compared to Kojou, and a spirit of rivalry burned within him — as if he wanted to prove he was not inferior to someone with supernatural power.
" There's no need for that, " Kojou replied without hesitation. Although he saw Takashi's competitive spirit, he didn't care much. It was obvious Takashi was just a sixteen-year-old boy — this was only natural. " Akatsuki and I will be enough, especially since we'll be using supernatural powers that could harm you and attract a lot of zombies with the noise. "
Kojou's words were honest and blunt. Having Takashi tag along would only be a burden and put him in danger, especially since he was already physically and mentally exhausted.
" So I'm a burden… " Takashi asked, clear disappointment in his voice. He didn't like the idea of being dead weight. While he was exceptional for a normal person, that meant little when supernatural forces — especially those on a world-ending scale like Kojou's — came into play.
" … " Kojou said nothing more and vanished from sight without a sound. His speed was something no ordinary human could track, and even Akatsuki and the others with supernatural abilities could barely keep up — and this wasn't even Kojou at full speed.
