Chapter 16: Chapter 15: Gears of Fate Begin to Turn
Yugen's Perspective
April 6, 2095. The National Defense Academy's entrance ceremony is in full swing, but their demonstration battle with active cadets spirals into chaos, fueled by my frustration at missing First High's ceremony. The academy's president, who requested the Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion to "tighten up" the lax cadets, collapses when I, the sole target, dominate the exercise.
Unaware of the uproar, I'm resting after sparring with Sanada and Yanagi.
"Impressive, 'Titania, the Annihilator Magician,'" Sanada remarks.
"Using [Ten] in reverse? Remarkable," Yanagi adds.
"It's useless in real combat. Too risky," I reply.
"Even toned down, it's terrifying you can pull it off," Sanada says.
Annihilator Magician. During the Okinawa invasion, I erased an entire fleet like it never existed, earning the title of Japan's second Strategic-Class Magician. Kazama, Sanada, and Yanagi, who witnessed it, are among the few who know my identity. I sit up, eyeing them.
"I sent a wooden bear carving to the Fuji training grounds for a magic experiment," I say.
"After that spar, you were testing ultra-long-range projectile magic?" Sanada asks.
"Something like that. The ultimate goal's a convergence spell for destroying asteroids outside the atmosphere," I reply.
Kyoko, slipping in unnoticed, sighs. "That's terrifyingly plausible for you, Yugen."
She saw me carve the bear from a fallen tree during the exercise and launch it with magic after declaring, "I'm sending it to Fuji." Kyoko feels unable to defend the higher-ups who ignored my circumstances.
"Sorry, Yugen. You wanted to attend the ceremony, didn't you?" she says.
"Don't worry, Kyoko-san. Oh, a message," I reply, checking my device.
"You had that during the spar?" Yanagi marvels, noting it survived.
"New Shadow Style emphasizes hardening magic. If I can't reinforce a device and fix its position relative to me, Grandpa Gozo's supersonic bokken would fly at me," I explain.
"We've faced Gozo's high-speed bokken, but how are you alive?" Sanada asks. "Who's the message from?"
"Tatsuya. He wanted to deliver it in person but sent it through another contact," I say, reading.
The message details Miyuki's speech at First High's ceremony, her classmates, and someone who knew Gozo—likely Erika. The student council president, Mayumi Saegusa, oddly remembered me, while her vice president glared at Tatsuya. The real issue: Miyuki's foul mood because her father and stepmother fawned over her at the celebratory event.
Tatsuya's request: Miyuki's upset. I've tried calming her, but say something too.
I groan inwardly. Don't dump your family drama on a freeloader, Tatsuya! I'm already stressed from being dragged to Hokkaido! I decide to reply, realizing I need to address something else. Lacking Miyuki's private address, I message Tatsuya.
"Looking forward to Miyuki's cooking as we live together starting tomorrow. P.S. Thanks for the reminder. Brace yourself for surprises tomorrow."
I hint at my freeloader status and identity. The result?
"Mission complete," Tatsuya replies.
I take it as a success, relieved the Shiba household won't turn into a deep freeze. Kyoko chuckles, "Tatsuya's struggling with his sister's mood, huh?"
"I can't help but sympathize," I mutter, suspecting Tatsuya's dodging questions via their mother, Sayuri.
Earlier, the Defense Force at Fuji training grounds was stunned by a falling object—my wooden bear. Mistaking it for an attack, soldiers gaped until Kazama clarified it wasn't hostile. He ordered it moved to the base, then to a military hotel lobby in the southeast training area. Afterward, he contacted Kyoko, who shut him down.
"Lieutenant Fujibayashi, any idea about a wooden bear landing at the training grounds?" Kazama asks.
"Major, reflect on dragging him here against his will," Kyoko snaps.
The bear, nicknamed "Harunobu," becomes a lucky charm rumor at Fuji—another story entirely.
First High, Class 1-A
That night, Honoka Mitsui, a first-year Course 1 student, calls her friend Shizuku Kitayama, also Course 1, via voice-only communication—a common, affordable option compared to video calls used for meetings.
"Sorry for freaking out today," Honoka says. She'd mistaken Tatsuya for a Course 1 student after his "beautiful" magic at the entrance exam—free of light-wave noise from inefficient spellcasting. Learning he was Course 2, she nearly shouted, but Shizuku covered her mouth.
"I stopped you before you screamed. But it was that impressive, huh?" Shizuku replies.
Honoka and Shizuku were in separate exam rooms, so Shizuku only heard about Tatsuya and Miyuki from Honoka. She recalls the commotion around Honoka's room but focused on her own exam. Honoka, gifted in light-wave magic, has a dependency trait, which Shizuku counters by being her protective friend.
"Tatsuya's magic felt minimal yet precise, unlike Miyuki's overwhelming power," Honoka says. "Weren't you looking for someone, Shizuku?"
"You noticed," Shizuku admits softly.
"Yugen, right?" Honoka guesses.
Shizuku murmurs, "Yeah."
They met Yugen at a Kitayama family party. Initially mature, he seemed age-appropriate in conversation. Honoka liked him but noticed Shizuku's budding feelings and chose friendship over romance. When Yugen transferred to their middle school, he joined the kendo club briefly, winning the national championship but quitting, saying, "My sword kills when needed. One tournament's enough." He spent his days reading in the literature club.
"I thought you'd fall for Yugen," Shizuku says.
"I considered it, but I want you to be happy. Plus, he said he's not interested," Honoka replies.
"Your new crush is Tatsuya, then?" Shizuku teases.
"Shizuku!" Honoka protests. She'd asked Yugen once, and he'd said, "I can't handle more dependents. Let's stay friends." They agreed on friendship.
Changing topics, Honoka asks, "Have you seen Yugen's magic?"
"At his dojo, New Shadow Style Kenjutsu. He used a vibration spell, 'Inferno,' controlling a one-meter grid of 64 high- and low-temperature zones," Shizuku says.
Honoka gasps. Shizuku's mother, an A-Class magician, said controlling 32 such spells simultaneously with precise power modulation is world-class, beyond Japan's licensing standards.
"Didn't Yugen say he's attending First High?" Honoka asks.
"Yeah, but I didn't see him today," Shizuku replies.
"Same. Weird," Honoka says, hearing Shizuku's breathing slow. "Asleep? Oh well, another time." She ends the call.
Shiba Household, Next Morning
Tatsuya and Miyuki ride the commuter train to First High. Tatsuya notes Miyuki's mixed expression but assumes she's moved past last night's drama. He pockets his device to ask, "What's wrong, Miyuki? Nervous about school?"
"I'm worried about how others will treat you," she admits.
Tatsuya reflects on yesterday's events. As a Course 2 student, he's used to comparisons with Miyuki but doesn't resent it. Still, the school's bias against Course 2 students could attract troublemakers to Miyuki. Unlike him, bound by emotional constraints, Miyuki's etiquette should help her navigate, but the school's elitism is a concern.
"You're stronger than me, Miyuki. Your second-place entrance score ensures respect," Tatsuya reassures.
"Really?" she asks.
As her guardian, he should stay close, but that would draw attention, especially with Ten Master Clans students around. To keep their promise of being "human" magicians, Miyuki must handle school independently. To shift topics, he says, "Yugen's moving in with us today, but I'm curious."
"About what?" Miyuki asks.
"You know Yugen fought alongside me in Okinawa, right?"
Tatsuya, limited to [Decomposition] and [Regrowth], contrasts with Yugen, who mastered attack and defense spells across multiple systems. If Yugen attends First High, he's likely Course 1, possibly surpassing Miyuki.
"I mentioned last night, via Mother, that Yugen's staying with us for school reasons," Tatsuya says.
"You think he's at First High?" Miyuki asks.
"Yeah, but I didn't see him. Maybe he was absent, per Erika's comments."
With Course 1 and 2 students separated and only orientation today and tomorrow, they might cross paths. Tatsuya's guess is close but misses my Ten Master Clans link, as he's wary of the top student from that group.
First High, Class 1-A
At First High, Tatsuya and Miyuki part for their separate classrooms, Course 1 and 2 divided even by staircases for safety and to prevent conflicts. Miyuki, displeased by the segregation, draws attention with her melancholic beauty, causing a male student to trip. If only I could walk with Yugen, she thinks, reaching Class 1-A. She greets the room, sits, and notices eyes on her—curious, not hostile. A twin-tailed girl approaches.
"Um, Shiba-sa—wah!" The girl trips, face-planting.
Classmates murmur, some mocking, others concerned. Miyuki helps her up. "Are you okay?"
"Thanks, Shiba-san," the girl says.
"You're welcome. Um…" Miyuki hesitates, unsure of her name.
"Mitsui. Mitsui Honoka," she says.
"Shiba Miyuki. Nice to meet you, Mitsui-san," Miyuki replies.
"Yes! Likewise!" Honoka beams, embarrassed but relieved. Shizuku, from the seat ahead, stands beside her.
"Sorry, Shiba-san. Honoka's clumsy," Shizuku says.
"Shizuku! That's mean!" Honoka protests.
"And you are…?" Miyuki asks.
"Kitayama Shizuku. I've heard about you," Shizuku says.
"Likewise. What rumors?" Miyuki inquires, sensing relevant gossip.
"Not rumors. Honoka's your fan—or rather, your brother's. They were in the same exam room," Shizuku says.
"Shizuku, wait!" Honoka blushes.
"Oh, really?" Miyuki says, pleased Tatsuya's fan seems harmless. Honoka retaliates.
"Shizuku's into Yugen!" she blurts.
"That's not for now," Shizuku says, as Miyuki reacts.
"You can call me Miyuki. Did you mention someone I know?" she asks, smiling.
Honoka looks surprised, Shizuku intrigued. An announcement interrupts, calling for orientation. They agree to continue later and take their seats, noting one empty desk beside Honoka.
The teacher, Mozuya, enters. "Congratulations on enrolling. I'm Mozuya, your Class 1-A advisor. This class comprises the top 25 entrance exam scorers."
She explains Course 1 students access exclusive resources and active magicians' lessons, unlike Course 2. "The top student, Mitsuya, is absent for family reasons, but all of you are elite. Don't forget the expectations on you."
For today, she assigns observing basic and applied magic classes in the morning and practical magic in the afternoon. "Meet in ten minutes at the experiment building's first-floor lobby, or explore other classes independently," Mozuya says, leaving for her next class.
Yugen's Perspective (Continued)
Back in Hokkaido, I'm still simmering from the Defense Academy stunt, but Tatsuya's message and Kyoko's sympathy lighten my mood. My wooden bear prank hit its mark—Kazama and the commander are scrambling. Good. They owe me for derailing my First High debut.
Miyuki delivering my speech is a win. I wrote it to unite Course 1 and 2, hoping she'd carry it off with her grace. Knowing it landed makes me smile, even if I'm stuck cleaning up this mess. Erika spilling my identity to her brother is a headache, but I trust her to keep it from Tatsuya and Miyuki until I'm ready.
Living with the Shibas is a bold move from Maya, tying Mitsuya and Yotsuba closer. It's a chance to reconnect with Tatsuya and Miyuki, but clan secrets make it a tightrope. My siblings' First High legacy sets a high bar, and Shina's questions about my "Nagano" days are getting trickier. At FLT, Valkyrie and Odin are nearly complete, and [Taurus Silver] is soaring. But First High's new stage—clan rivalries, Mayumi's interest, and Miyuki's heavy chocolate—has me on edge.
Okinawa's shadow lingers. Tatsuya's hints about Miyuki's struggles worry me, and I'm not sure what's next. For now, I'll get to Tokyo, join First High, and stay ahead of the clans circling me. Tomorrow's my chance to surprise Tatsuya and Miyuki—let's see how they handle "Yugen Mitsuya."
