Chapter 18: Chapter 17: The Sting of a Surprise Strike
First High, Main Gate
Yugen, this year's top freshman and a Mitsuya from the Ten Master Clans, halts the clash between Course 1 and 2 students with a single, decisive move. Unfazed by the stunned crowd, he speaks sharply.
"Listen up. Except for Honoka, you all activated attack spells. Carrying CADs outside the school building's fine, but using lethal magic without cause is a crime, school rules aside. Got that?"
Course 1 students falter, silenced. Yugen zeros in on Morisaki.
"Especially you, Morisaki. As a Hundred Families member, you know the weight of breaking the law. Yet you drew first. If any of those five Course 2 students got hurt—or all of them—you get the consequences, right? You flaunted the Bloom-Weed divide with 'Weed,' but that doesn't excuse ignorance for elite Course 1 students."
Tatsuya's group didn't initiate with CADs, aiming for dialogue. Course 1 drew first; Course 2's response could've been self-defense. Had spells landed, injuring anyone, Morisaki's family reputation—a bodyguard clan—would've taken a fatal hit. Even unintentionally harming others marks you as dangerous, especially for Morisaki's kin.
Yugen noted Honoka's flash spell, akin to a mild flash grenade, disruptive but not blinding. He dismantled it with [Gram Demolition] to be safe. If they're so superior, they should hone their judgment. A counselor's here for that. A famed magician once said, "Magicians must stay calm." Yugen admits he's no saint either.
Course 1 students pale, Morisaki included. Their actions are indefensible. Then, two seniors—Mayumi and another, likely Mari Watanabe—appear, CADs ready, warning of consequences for magic use.
"What are you doing!? Pointing CADs at people is a crime!" Mari snaps.
Course 1 is cornered. Yugen, not aiming to bail them out, steps forward, holding the confiscated CADs, and bows.
"Sorry. Seems everyone was curious about Morisaki's [Quick Draw]. A misunderstanding led me to intervene," he says.
Mayumi and Mari, along with the crowd, are taken aback. Yugen's explanation sounds genuine. Mari probes further.
"Then explain the girl's spell," she says, eyeing Honoka.
Tatsuya answers, "It was a mild flash spell to stop the escalation."
Mari raises an eyebrow. "You read its activation sequence?"
"I'm poor at practicals but good at analysis," Tatsuya replies.
"Skilled at dodging too," Mari retorts.
Yugen backs him up. "Just a misunderstanding that got out of hand. Sorry for troubling you, seniors."
With the instigators apologizing, the seniors are stuck. Mayumi speaks up.
"Fine, Mari. Teaching magic isn't bad, but activation has strict rules. Hold off on self-study until you learn them."
Mari sighs, relenting. She eyes Tatsuya and Yugen. "Names?"
"Mitsuya Yugen, Class 1-A," Yugen says.
"Shiba Tatsuya, Class 1-E," Tatsuya replies.
"Noted," Mari says, turning away. Mayumi lingers, whispering to Yugen.
"No trouble, right, Yuu-kun?"
"None, Saegusa-senpai. Please go," Yugen replies curtly.
Mayumi pouts, sticks out her tongue, and follows Mari. A resentful voice pipes up.
"Don't think I owe you," Morisaki grumbles.
"Didn't say you did," Yugen replies, tossing back his CAD.
Morisaki snatches it, glaring at Tatsuya. "Nagano or Mitsuya—I'm Morisaki Shun, main branch. I don't accept you, Shiba Tatsuya. Shiba-san belongs with us!"
Elitist nonsense, Yugen thinks. His Ten Master Clans status softens the blow, but a lesser name would've been messier. Morisaki turns to him.
"Mitsuya, I won't lose to you!"
"I respect a sore loser. Bring it on," Yugen says.
Morisaki, flustered by the casual retort, storms off with his Course 1 entourage. One issue down, Yugen faces Tatsuya, who eyes him warily. Yugen sighs inwardly.
"So, Tatsuya, where do I start?" he asks.
"Why hide your name? To conceal your Ten Master Clans ties?" Tatsuya guesses.
"Correct. My family's business attracts enemies. You're sharp enough to get that," Yugen says, hinting at Tatsuya's Yotsuba ties without exposing them.
"What about our first meeting?" Tatsuya asks.
"All through my father. Couldn't refuse," Yugen replies.
Tatsuya nods, recalling Okinawa's invasion—the Defense Force job, Kuroba's party, the cruiser, the airport—all orchestrated via Yugen's father and Gozo. No lies.
"Why risk your life for Miyuki? And protect me so fiercely?" Tatsuya asks.
Yugen doesn't hesitate. "I just wanted to. Not about Mitsuya duties or Ten Master Clans. I didn't care about that. Hiding my name meant I didn't want to lean on my family."
He extends his right hand, smiling. "No excuse for deceiving you. I want to be your friend, not as a Ten Master Clans member, but as me. That okay?"
"I was too suspicious," Tatsuya admits, shaking Yugen's hand.
"Mitsuya Yugen. Call me Yugen. Nice to meet you," Yugen says.
"Shiba Tatsuya. Tatsuya's fine. Likewise, Yugen," Tatsuya replies.
As they share a firm handshake, Miyuki tackles Yugen with a hug.
"Yugen-san!" she cries.
"Guh!?" Yugen stumbles.
"Yugen!?" Tatsuya exclaims, stunned by Miyuki.
Miyuki's joy sparkles, almost glowing. "Yugen-san, I'm so glad to see you!"
"Same here… Tatsuya, has she powered up?" Yugen asks, wincing.
"Certain people we know egged her on," Tatsuya says.
Yugen gets it—those sisters. Only they'd influence Miyuki this much. Hayama might temper her, and Tatsuya considers her feelings. Erika interrupts their bubble.
"Hey, you three, back to reality," she says.
"Sorry, Erika. Here," Yugen returns her baton CAD.
Erika grins. "Sealing my brother, and now Tatsuya's sister, huh?"
"Keep joking, and I'll have Gozo put you, Kazu, and Tsugu through the full Hachibu course," Yugen warns.
"No way! Even they'd be wrecked!" Erika backtracks.
Tatsuya nods, understanding Yugen's New Shadow Style training and his victory over Erika's brother with hardening magic alone. Yugen calms Miyuki and greets the others.
"Third intro: Mitsuya Yugen, of that Mitsuya. Call me Yugen, no need for distance," he says.
"Saijo Leonhardt. Leo's fine. Nice to meet you, Yugen," Leo says.
"Shibata Mizuki. Mizuki's okay. Pleased to meet you, Yugen-san," Mizuki adds.
As they bond, Honoka and Shizuku approach.
"Thanks, Yugen-san," Honoka says.
"Long time, Yugen—no, Yugen. Ten Master Clans? Shocking," Shizuku says.
"Been a while, Shizuku, Honoka. Still tight, huh? Ow, Miyuki-san, stop pinching!" Yugen yelps.
Miyuki pouts, unconsciously jealous. Tatsuya sighs inwardly. She's clueless about her feelings, but so is Yugen.
After brief introductions, Honoka suggests walking home together partway, and they agree.
Yugen's Perspective
That went better than expected. Morisaki's tantrum was predictable, but shutting down the fight with [Gram Demolition] and a few sharp words felt good. Course 1's elitism is a problem, but I'm not here to play hero—just to set things straight. Taking the blame for the "misunderstanding" kept Mayumi and Mari off our backs, though Mayumi's "Yuu-kun" act is already a headache. Her pout says she's fishing for something, but I'm not biting.
Tatsuya's sharper than I remembered. He saw through my "Nagano" alias and tied it to the Mitsuya name fast. That handshake was a truce, but his questions about Okinawa hit hard. I meant what I said—saving Miyuki and protecting him wasn't about clan duties. It was personal. Still, Miyuki's hug caught me off guard. Powered up? Understatement. Those sisters—probably Kana and Mika—have her wound up. I'll need to watch that.
Erika's teasing keeps things light, but her threat about Gozo's Hachibu course was a nice counter. Leo and Mizuki seem solid, and Honoka and Shizuku's familiar faces are a relief, even if Miyuki's pinch stung. Jealousy? Nah, can't be. She's just… enthusiastic.
The Mitsuya "Untouchable" reputation is already a shadow over First High, thanks to Kana and Mika's antics. Haruka's "terrified teachers" comment still stings—what did my sisters do? No wonder Morisaki's got a chip on his shoulder, but he'll learn I'm not here to play his games.
Heading to the Shiba residence will be the real test. Living with Tatsuya and Miyuki, balancing [Taurus Silver], school, and clan politics, all while keeping Shina safe—it's a lot. The Hokkaido stunt and that wooden bear prank (Harunobu, huh?) got my point across to Kazama, but the Ten Master Clans are circling. Mayumi's interest, Miyuki's chocolate, and Shizuku's quiet glances are all threads in this web. Okinawa's shadow looms, but I'm ready to face what's next.
Tatsuya's Perspective
Yugen's entrance was something else. Neutralizing CADs with [Gram Demolition] and calling out Morisaki without breaking a sweat—he's not just the top freshman; he's a force. His Mitsuya reveal explains a lot, but his "Nagano" alias and Okinawa actions raise more questions. Why hide his name? Why risk so much for Miyuki and me? His answers felt honest, but there's more to him than he's letting on.
Miyuki's reaction—tackling him like that—shows how much he means to her. I'm not sure if she realizes her feelings, but Yugen's clueless too. Erika's quips and Leo and Mizuki's easy acceptance make this group feel like a unit already, but Morisaki's elitism is a problem. Course 1 and 2 tensions won't vanish overnight, and Yugen's speech—delivered by Miyuki—set a tone. He's pushing for equality, but it'll stir trouble.
Living with Yugen will be interesting. His [Taurus Silver] work with me at FLT is solid, and his CAD designs—Valkyrie and Odin—are game-changers. But his Ten Master Clans status and that "Untouchable" reputation mean eyes on us, especially from Saegusa. Mayumi's "Yuu-kun" act was playful, but her interest feels calculated. I'll need to watch her and Morisaki while keeping Miyuki grounded.
For now, we'll walk home together. Yugen's surprises are just starting, and I'm ready to see what he's got up his sleeve.
