Chapter 20: Chapter 19: The Enigma of Yugen
Yugen Mitsuya, once known as Yuto Nagano, carried a layered identity.
Our first meeting was three years ago in Okinawa. Trained harshly as Miyuki's guardian, I encountered Yugen and likely his brother, Motoharu Mitsuya. Yugen didn't strike me as calculating, though Motoharu showed faint fear toward Mother. No need for wariness, I thought. At Naha Airport, Miyuki's reluctant expression lingered her first spark of interest in someone, Yugen.
The second encounter was at Kureha's private party. Miyuki, usually reserved, approached Yugen after noticing him while I spoke with Fumiya and Ayako. I felt cautious seeing her engage so openly. Yugen bowed politely before leaving, but I couldn't tell if it was to me as Miyuki's brother or her guardian.
The third time, Mother's suggestion led us to a chartered cruiser where Yugen was a fellow passenger. Despite his youth, he handled instruments expertly, spoke fluent English over the radio, and wielded an unfamiliar gun-shaped CAD. He used weighted-deceleration magic on a torpedo, which I neutralized with [Decomposition]. He "erased" a submarine, a detail I missed in the moment my oversight. Later, he revealed it was a composite of weighted magic and [Decomposition]. Knowing another could use [Decomposition] shocked me, but I'd never expose it, lest my own abilities come to light.
The fourth was at Onna Air Base. After Joe's defeat, I suspected Yugen's intentions toward Miyuki and challenged him. Confident as a Yotsuba guardian, I assumed I'd win against a peer. Using [Spell Dismantling], I was ready until Yugen vanished and knocked me out with a hand chop. Awakening minutes later, he was gone. Lieutenant Sanada said Yugen hadn't wanted to fight, not due to skill disparity but because of Miyuki.
"Yuto-san isn't at fault. I approached him. Onii-sama, reflect on this," Miyuki said.
Yugen had asked her to clear the misunderstanding. Ashamed, I realized my suspicion stemmed more from my intense emotions for Miyuki than my guardian duties.
At the lab, engrossed with Sanada, I noticed Miyuki chatting warmly at a desk with Yugen. He handed her cookies, which I tasted for poison. The chocolate chip cookies were perfectly sweet. From then, Yugen became "the strange guy who opens Miyuki's heart." Perhaps I, too, started seeing him as she did.
Back at the villa, the women eating his cookies made odd faces, muttering "defeated." Neither Yugen nor I understood, a mystery beyond magic.
During the Great Asian Alliance's Okinawa invasion, Yugen protected Miyuki. Unwilling to see her grieve, I used [Regrowth] on him, noting a self-repair response akin to mine, which I buried deep. From then, Yugen stirred something in my cold heart. I learned he was a special forces officer, explaining his base presence. I joined the fight partly for Miyuki, partly for gratitude toward him.
Impressive…
With a sword-integrated CAD, he cut down dozens of soldiers, their bodies consumed by searing flames. His gun-shaped CAD unleashed multi-structure defensive magic, blasting survivors beyond the horizon likely a Phalanx variant. Facing the fleet, he proposed Sanada use the "Third Eye Zero" rifle booster, a prototype for my "Third Eye." I used [Material Burst] in combat for the first time, while Yugen countered tsunamis and erased the enemy fleet with strategic-class magic, [Mirror Dispersion], as if it never existed.
"Yuto-san's in my care. Return to Tokyo. Stay at the Izu villa," Mother said.
Mother and Honami stayed to nurse Yugen, unconscious. Miyuki and I returned, spending summer at Izu. Mother insisted I call her "Mother," not "Madam." Confused but compliant, I saw Miyuki's joy and accepted it.
Post-incident, Miyuki called me "Onii-sama," her respect deepening, and her feelings for Yugen grew. Though my emotions are dulled, I recognized her state. "I-I'm not… that far gone," she stammered, blushing, unconvincing. Her delight at Yugen's gifts and refined Valentine's chocolates betrayed her. "He saved my life, as important as Onii-sama," she insisted, denying her affection. Mother sighed deeply, unsure how to guide her in love a sentiment I echoed, earning another sigh from her.
At FLT, Ushiyama mentioned a hardware genius, "Young Master." Seeing designs from "Kojin Uejō," I recognized Third Eye Zero's influence compact, high-performance CADs. Yugen confirmed he was Kojin. As [Taurus Silver], we collaborated, his hardware designs enhancing my CADs. I entrusted [Decomposition] and [Regrowth] storage development to him, his activation sequences too complex for even Sanada. "I build by instinct, not logic," Yugen said a genius beyond reason.
He was a Mitsuya, one of the Ten Master Clans, rumored "untouchable" due to his siblings' deeds. Yet he remained humble, extending friendship. I shook his hand. Miyuki's enthusiastic hug surprised me respect, not romance, though it felt close. I let it slide.
Post-Okinawa, Mother seemed younger. Yugen, puzzled, said, "I treated her, but rejuvenation? No clue." I dropped it, sensing his own struggles with her.
The First Morning at the Shiba Household
At 5 a.m., Yugen sighed, cursing his early waking. After a shower, he found Miyuki in the kitchen, breakfast ready. She greeted him, already in uniform.
"Morning, Miyuki. School's at 8, isn't it early?" Yugen asked.
"I'm joining Onii-sama's training and reporting to Master Kuhō," she said, removing her apron. "He wants to meet you, Yugen-san."
Yakumo Kuhō, monk of Kyūchōji Temple, tied to the Kudō clan, a true ninja. Despite renouncing worldliness, he claimed, "No touching, no foul." Gōzō called him a "lecherous monk." Harsh, but his skill matched Yugen's Kamiizumi ninjutsu.
Tatsuya, in training gear, joined them. Miyuki handed them drinks, which they downed politely. Her rhythm dominated the exchange.
"I'm heading out. Yugen, join us?" Tatsuya asked.
"Since Miyuki mentioned Kuhō's interest, I'm in," Yugen replied.
"I'll come too," Miyuki said, grabbing a breakfast basket.
Tatsuya, noting her uniform, hesitated. "I can't keep up with Onii-sama's training. I'm just reporting today," she clarified, anticipating Kuhō's reaction.
"If he acts out, I've got it," Yugen assured. "Gōzō gave me permission to handle the 'lecherous monk.'"
Tatsuya and Miyuki chuckled.
To Kyūchōji, they didn't walk they moved at 60 km/h using magic. Miyuki glided with gravity-reduction and vector control. Tatsuya ran with acceleration and leap suppression. Yugen used minimal-output vector, gravity, and inertia control, his shorter activation time offset by martial skill.
Each step demanded Tatsuya's spell activation, Miyuki's constant control, and Yugen's rapid, complex casting. Training as they went, they headed for the temple.
