Chapter 26: Chapter 25: A Day's Round Trip
After snapping everyone back to reality, Yugen returned to the student council room. He'd just learned the basics of operating the terminal nothing too complex when Mayumi beckoned him with a subtle gesture. Excusing himself to Suzune, he approached, and she asked him to check on the discipline committee headquarters.
"Why?" Yugen asked.
"Well… Mari's terrible at cleaning up," Mayumi admitted.
"If Mika-neesan hears that, it's a suplex for sure," Yuugen quipped.
Right before enrolling, Mika had briefed him on Mari. During the handover, she'd warned, "You're too careless, and it causes trouble. Keep things tidy." Despite the detailed note, the discipline committee headquarters was a mess. When Yugen arrived, he found Tatsuya already cleaning up, who noticed him immediately.
"Yugen, what's up?" Tatsuya asked.
"Mayumi sent me to check things out. I'll help. Two's better than one, right?"
"Thanks," Tatsuya said.
"No big deal. Mari's the one getting suplexed anyway."
Tatsuya tilted his head, puzzled, while Mari broke into a cold sweat, knowing her predecessor's punishments were no joke.
"Yugen, please don't tell Mika," Mari pleaded.
"My sister's sixth sense will pick it up anyway," Yugen said. "She'll come flying in with a joint lock. Classic."
He wasn't planning to snitch, but Mika's uncanny intuition made it inevitable. Yugen's joint-locking skills, learned from Mika, had mostly been practiced on Genji poor guy. As they tidied, Mari explained why she'd recruited Tatsuya for the discipline committee.
"It might backfire for Course 2 students," Tatsuya said. "Upperclassmen won't take kindly to a junior Course 2 enforcing rules."
"But first-years will welcome it," Mari countered.
"And Course 1 students will resent it twice as much," Tatsuya shot back.
Yugen chimed in, "Tatsuya, I'm a first-year Course 1 student, you know."
"You're an exception among exceptions," Tatsuya said. "Your sisters sound superhuman the more I hear. You too."
"That's harsh," Yugen groaned. "As for resentment, Morisaki's probably the worst."
"Morisaki got a faculty recommendation for the discipline committee," Mari revealed.
"What?" Tatsuya fumbled a stack of items, stunned. Mari smirked at his reaction, and even Yugen couldn't hide his surprise. He pulled up the terminal to confirm.
"You guys get shocked too, huh?" Mari teased.
"Of course," Yugen said.
"Otherwise, we'd just be scary faces," Tatsuya added.
A faculty recommendation for Morisaki was shocking, even if it didn't pan out. Touya, though? He'd likely decline to avoid trouble.
"Yugen, you talking about me?" Tatsuya asked.
"Didn't name you," Yuugen replied.
"Your teasing's starting to sound like Miyuki's."
As they bantered and sorted data, two male students entered, armbands marking them as discipline committee members. They greeted Mari, spotting her immediately.
"Hey, boss!" one said.
"Morning," the other added.
"Big sis is here!" the first exclaimed.
Big sis suits her, Yugen thought, stifling a grin. The slimmer student snapped to attention, reporting, "Patrol complete, ma'am. No arrests!"
Mari whacked the short-haired student with rolled-up paper, the sharp thwack echoing. "Stop calling me big sis! Is your head just for show?"
"Don't hit so hard!" he whined, then noticed Yuugen and Tatsuya. "Newbies?"
"The one at the terminal is a student council helper," Mari said. "The other's with us."
"Huh, a Weed?" the student, Tatsumi, remarked.
"Senpai Tatsumi, that term's off-limits," Yuugen corrected. "Course 2 is the proper term."
The two seniors sized up Yugen and Tatsuya. Unfazed, Yuugen kept working on the terminal as Mari dropped a bombshell. "Just between us, Hattori got taken down earlier."
"Undefeated Hattori?" Tatsumi gasped.
"In an official match," Mari confirmed.
"That's promising," the other, Sawaki, said.
"A real talent," Tatsumi agreed.
Mari grinned mischievously at their reactions. Tatsuya looked surprised by the praise. Yugen, finishing the terminal adjustments, approached. "Done here," he said.
"Student council treasurer, first-year Yugen Mitsuya," he introduced himself.
Role-wise, only the president and vice president had hierarchy; Miyuki was secretary, Yugen treasurer. The seniors zeroed in on his surname.
"Mitsuya? Mika-neesan's brother?" Tatsumi asked.
"Yeah," Mari said. "And get this he beat Juumonji in an official match. Broke his signature Phalanx."
"What!?" Tatsumi exclaimed.
"The head himself?" Sawaki added. "This year's first-years are something else."
Beating a top-tier third-year like Katsuto stunned them. Mari, smirking, continued, "This school's obsessed with Bloom and Weed labels superiority or inferiority complexes. I'm sick of it. Mika understood me, though. That's why I became discipline committee chair."
Mari noted that Mika, the previous chair, had reduced such attitudes significantly. A problem child who never backed down, even against the principal, Mika still earned stellar grades.
"Thankfully, Mayumi and Juumonji get my personality, so student council and club committee picks have less of that nonsense. Faculty recommendations are trickier, but this should be a decent place for you," Mari told Yugen.
The seniors introduced themselves. "Third-year, Class C, Koutarou Tatsumi. Strong fighters are welcome. Nice to meet you, Siba, Mitsuya."
"Second-year, Class D, Midori Sawaki. Welcome, Siba-kun, Mitsuya-kun."
"First-year, Tatsuya Siba. Likewise," Tatsuya said, shaking hands.
"Same here," Yuugen added.
The busy day wasn't over. That night, Yugen headed to the Siba residence's basement to offer Tatsuya coffee. Sensing a presence, he opened the CAD adjustment room door.
"Tatsuya, I brought cof—"
He froze. The monitor chair was toppled. Tatsuya lay on the floor, Miyuki sitting nearby in just underwear and a light cover. Likely, Miyuki had come for combat spell adjustments post-mock battle, but… they noticed him.
"Yugen?" Tatsuya said.
"Um, Yugen-san, this is…" Miyuki stammered.
"Yeah, CAD adjustment trouble, right? Coffee's here. Drink it before it cools. Take your time," Yugen said, retreating.
No need to meddle in sibling bonding. I'd rather not get kicked to hell by a horse. Yugen returned to his room, prepping for tomorrow.
Tatsuya, reading Yuugen's quick exit, knew he'd assumed it was a sibling spat. He understood it was CAD-related. Forbidden love? Even with his intense feelings for Miyuki, Tatsuya knew that crossed a line. Yugen likely thought it was just a squabble.
"It's your fault, Onii-sama," Miyuki huffed.
"That's unfair, Miyuki," Tatsuya replied, stumped by her misplaced blame.
The next day, Yugen was called to the staff room for a minor, 30-second update on forgotten orientation details, easily handled by faculty.
"Could've just messaged me," Yugen muttered.
Then, he spotted three Course 1 students, including Morisaki, looking disgruntled. Eavesdropping with enhanced hearing, he caught their gripes about the discipline committee. With a third-year vacancy filled, Tatsuya had likely clashed with Morisaki at a meeting.
"Something's off," Morisaki complained. "What trick did he pull?"
"Student council recommendation, huh? Probably begged Siba-san," another said.
Why assume Tatsuya's weak? Yugen thought. Tatsuya could overpower all of them with physical skills alone. Yuugen himself could disrupt with stealth and Gram Demolition, but Tatsuya's suppression was on par. Only Tatsuya had fully seen through that technique. Erika might've guessed; Miyuki's intuition could've tipped her off.
From Touya, Yugen knew Morisaki's failed attempts to impress Miyuki. He's still not learned. Mental resilience was key for magic, but Morisaki's attitude wouldn't cut it.
Better stop that talk before Miyuki freezes you, Yugen thought.
In Class 1-A, Morisaki's complaints continued calling it "outrageous" for a Course 2 "Weed" to regulate Course 1 "Blooms." The room's temperature plummeted as Miyuki overheard, freezing the three culprits. Impressed by her effortless interference, Yugen watched as she warned them as a student council officer. Morisaki complied, and her spell lifted. Judging no further trouble, Yuugen took his seat, pretending he saw nothing.
Club recruitment week began, with clubs vying for first-years. CAD restrictions eased for performances, a detail Yugen knew from Kana and Mika, former student council and discipline committee chairs.
"Recruitment battle?" Touya asked.
"Yeah, it's about securing members and budgets. Gets intense," Yugen said.
"Any issues?"
"Unofficially, entrance exam scores circulate among clubs. Top scorers like you, Honoka, and Shizuku are prime targets."
"That's real?" Touya asked.
"Confirmed by my sisters and Mayumi. Watch out."
"Got it," Touya said.
Yugen left to handle student council duties, as nine discipline committee members couldn't monitor hundreds alone. En route, he met Miyuki, who'd been with Tatsuya until he sent her to Yuugen.
We're not dating, Yuugen thought. Not that I mind, but it feels… out of my league. Tatsuya, now patrolling as a discipline committee member—the first Course 2 in that role might attract trouble, given his knack for it.
"Tatsuya's meddling," Yu gen sighed. "He should get a girlfriend to ease up."
"That's harsh for Onii-sama, who cares little for appearances," Miyuki said.
"I know, but without some push, he'll go overboard elsewhere. If rumors spread, I'm the first casualty."
"That could harm his reputation," Miyuki agreed.
A slim chance, but better than nothing. They entered the student council room, where Mayumi grumbled at a monitor, Mari glaring coldly behind her.
"What's that?" Mari snapped.
"It's just… I was the only one on dining server duty today, so I got lonely!" Mayumi whined. "Ow!"
"Do that at home!" Mari scolded, her fist landing.
Mayumi had been searching bento recipes. Such scenes were routine; even Miyuki, the newest member, was unfazed. Yugen, knowing Mayumi's quirks, wasn't surprised. Her playful teasing often drew Miyuki's reactions—far from drama, just friendly banter.
During recruitment week, the student council and club committee assisted the discipline committee, who handled violations. Mari explained, "If no discipline members are nearby and a culprit flees, use your judgment. Contact me or Mayumi."
With Vice President Hattori at the club committee and Mayumi handling arrests, Yugen, the only male council member, became a de facto patrol. When he quietly asked why Mayumi was included, Mari whispered, "She threw a fit. Bear with it for this week."
Patrolling quieter areas, Yugen reached the mountaineering club's building. A signboard confirmed it, and the club president approached.
"Joining us?" he asked.
"No, I'm Yugen Mitsuya, student council treasurer, helping the discipline committee."
"No trouble here. Did you say Mitsuya? Mika's brother?"
"Yeah, you know her?"
The president shared that Mika, a former mountaineer and council member, ran the training course ten times weekly, boosting the club's stamina. As Yugen absorbed this, two familiar students approached.
"Yugen?" Leo said.
"Leo? Touya? Odd pair," Yugen remarked.
"Surprising, right?" Touya laughed.
Leo fit the mountaineering vibe, but Touya seemed more cultural. A Course 1 and Course 2 duo was unusual. When asked if he could handle it, Touya said, "I'm fine. I jogged from Fuji's base to the summit daily during summer break."
"Leo, my view of Touya's shifting," Yugen said.
"Don't worry, mine too," Leo replied.
Even with magic, Touya's feat was staggering, reminding Yugen and Leo of his Ten Master Clans potential.
