The Untouchable of Magic High School – A New God Enters the Game

Chapter 4: Chapter 3: Encounters and Obligations

I'm Miyuki Shiba. I have parents and an older brother, but my parents aren't close, and Mother insists I treat Tatsuya as a bodyguard, not a brother. At school, we play the part of typical siblings to avoid drawing attention.

Our family dynamic is far from normal, and I know why. Despite our different surname, Mother's sister, Maya Yotsuba, leads the Yotsuba Clan—a name that defines the elite of the magical world. As a potential heir, Mother holds me to their exacting standards.

Mother's fragile health, strained by her powerful magic, makes this rare family trip all the more precious. Yet Tatsuya's presence as a bodyguard feels like an intrusion. His stoic demeanor and the distance Mother enforces between us leave me confused. Our warped family bond is something I can't fully grasp.

As I mulled this over, Mother noticed someone. "Stay here," she said, stepping away. Tatsuya, as always, lingered out of sight. When she returned, she beckoned us. "Come meet some acquaintances. Both of you."

I assumed it would just be me, but she included Tatsuya to maintain our sibling act, ensuring no one questions our relationship. I nodded quietly.

The acquaintances were two young men, one around my age. Mother's youthful appearance made their connection intriguing. I introduced myself as instructed.

"Yugen Nagano. Nice to meet you, Shiba-san," the younger one said, politely greeting Tatsuya as well. Mother, who usually frowns at such courtesy toward him, smiled. "So much like Gozo," she remarked, leaving me puzzled.

They were on our flight. Mother rearranged the seats, placing Yugen next to me. I'm used to responding politely but hesitated to pry. To distract myself, I pulled up history notes on my terminal.

Curiosity got the better of me. I closed my terminal and glanced at Yugen. He was about to stand when our eyes met.

"Need something? I'm heading to the restroom, but we can talk after. Sound good?" he asked kindly.

"Um, yes," I replied, caught off guard by his warmth. I'm not one to engage with strangers, but something about him stirred a feeling I couldn't quite place.

Yugen Nagano's Perspective

Wow. Experiencing Miyuki's charm up close is something else. "Captivating the world" isn't just talk—it's real. At thirteen, I thought her allure might be softer, but I was wrong.

Lingering in the restroom would look suspicious, so I tidied up and returned. Miyuki was fidgeting in her seat, radiating an almost comical cuteness. "Shiba-san, what did you want to ask?"

"How do you know Mother?" she asked.

"Call me Yugen. It's my first time meeting Miya-san, but my grandfather, Gozo, was close with her and her parents. That's the connection."

A photo in my possession confirmed my suspicions. Gozo's stories revealed he and thirty Yotsuba members stormed Dahan, leaving 5,000 dead. Gozo alone accounted for 1,000—confirmed kills, no less. I nearly quipped, "This isn't a one-man-army video game!" He's practically a modern Lü Bu. To enemies, a nightmare. Lightning and slashing storms—1,000 might even be an underestimate. I'd believe it.

His magic was damaged by the aftermath, but my [Reinforce] restored it. He got overexcited, only to throw out his back during Shizuru's punishment. Partly my fault, but we called it even.

Gozo once muttered, "If you'd been born sooner…" The loneliness in his voice hinted at a deep bond with Genzo, likely a friendship. The letters he entrusted to me supported that.

Shizuru's scolding ruined the moment's poetry.

"Sorry, Shiba-san. This is your family trip, and we're intruding. We should've declined."

"No, Mother probably arranged this for me. Aren't you… afraid of my brother?"

Afraid? Terrified. He's Sasu-Oni. One wrong move, and [Decomposition] could erase me. I have countermeasures, but avoiding conflict is smarter. Masking my fear, I said, "More like intrigued."

"Huh?"

"I don't know his full story, but guarding his sister without complaint? That takes serious resolve. I couldn't do it at my age."

I know why Tatsuya's her guardian but can't say it. For now, with our separate goals, that's my answer.

"I never thought of it that way," Miyuki said, surprised.

"It's normal. You don't dig into someone's family matters unless you're close."

Her shock wasn't disgust but amazement that someone acknowledged Tatsuya's role without judgment. Only he could truly understand her feelings.

"By the way, why are you and your brother in Okinawa? Vacation?" she asked.

"I wish. Half is meeting a contact, half is a party hosted by one of Gramps' acquaintances. No beach or sports during peak season—lame. I'd rather watch the Nine Schools Competition."

I wanted to support my family but prioritized building a connection with Tatsuya for safety. Still, I meant it. Knowing trouble's likely coming makes it worse. A tsunami wiping out the Great Asian Alliance's ports would be convenient, but no such luck.

"I often watch the Nine Schools. Want to go together sometime?" she offered.

Safe enough. "I'd love to."

We chatted until we landed. Wait, this isn't some romantic flag, right? Miyuki's brother complex is intense, so it shouldn't escalate. My goal was connecting with Tatsuya, with befriending Miyuki as a foundation. Anything more is too risky, and I have no such intentions.

I couldn't have predicted what came next, cheat abilities or not.

After parting at the airport, Motoharu and I took a driverless taxi to our hotel. Motoharu looked like a boxer after a brutal match, ready to collapse. Hang in there, Bro. Life goes on!

I forgot to give Miya her letter. I'll deliver it next time or send it through Dad to the Yotsuba.

"What's got you so drained?" I asked.

"Miya-san grilled me. I barely kept our Mitsuya ties under wraps," he replied.

"Rest at the hotel. I can handle the party alone if needed."

He'd struggle at the evening party, so he agreed to rest, avoiding slip-ups that could expose us. Smart move.

At the hotel, after lunch, my communicator buzzed. It was Lieutenant Shigeru Sanada. "Long time, Yuto-kun."

"Hey, Sanada-san. Calling from the base?"

"Yup. Got that booster?"

"Brought it. It's for a demo too."

Half my Okinawa trip was a military base demonstration. Through Sanada, I hold three titles, including Special Technical Advisor to the Defense Forces' Weapons Development Department, as First Lieutenant Tatsumi Kamijo—a provisional rank due to my age.

"What about that email? 'They' causing trouble again?" I asked.

"Yeah. Some base personnel picked a fight with kids your age. The boy got thrashed."

"Report and reprimand them. That's outside my scope. But you wouldn't contact me just for that, right?"

A cryptic email from Sanada arrived after landing. Not a base summons, but a report of personnel harassing kids our age, only to get beaten—likely by Tatsuya. As a special officer, I have no supervisory role, so I brushed it off.

Sanada's tone turned serious. "You're sharp. As First Lieutenant Kamijo, we need your insight. The captain suspects an invasion based on recent maritime activity. It's speculative, but he values your take."

My CAD expertise led Sanada's superior, Kazama, to recruit me as an advisor, not a combatant. I nearly declined, but Dad's tense relationship with the Toyama Clan and their tolerance of our business convinced me. My identity's concealed due to my age.

Sanada and Kazama also rely on my intel, thanks to a spot-on tip about the Great Asian Alliance. In return, I got my rank. A twelve-year-old in military work raises legal and ethical questions, but I've stopped fighting it.

"Likely, yes. Submarine movements and port intel suggest an attack within days."

"Thanks, Yugen-kun. You're a lifesaver. See you at the base."

"Later."

I'd cast an info-shielding spell to minimize leaks. Five years of studying global tech and developing countermeasures paid off. One was my rifle-type booster, [Third Eye Zero], with security that shocks thieves via emission magic.

Military business done, I swapped casual clothes for a suit. I'm used to Ten Master Clan parties, attending as "Nagano Yugen." Living at the Kamiizumi estate, Gozo's meddling dragged me to mage households across Japan and abroad, sparking incidents. Climbing Fuji with minimal gear as "training"? Insane, but I pulled it off. Gozo's connections introduced me to many, but that's another story.
