Chapter 49: Chapter 48: Hidden Hearts and Covert Threats!!
Miyuki was thrilled about Tatsuya's Nine Schools inclusion. Kana's hours-long rage mode was nerve-wracking to witness—condolences to the trio. As the three headed home, Tatsuya spoke up.
"Still, Nakajou-senpai saw through everything," he said. "Know her skill level?"
"Not quite your level, but close," Yugen replied. "I'm busting my ass just to catch up."
"Got it. Maybe I'll ask her to tune Miyuki's CAD next."
The Shiba household used a tuning machine even more advanced than the Nine Schools' model. Truth be told, the Mitsuya's basement had one of the same caliber. Tuning meant working in underwear by default… Yugen shuddered. Let's not revisit that memory.
"Tatsuya, what're you trying to do to me?" Yugen groaned. "Every tuning request shaves years off my life."
"Yugen-san?" Miyuki asked. "What's that mean?"
"I can't handle seeing you like that," he admitted.
"…I don't mind, really," Miyuki said, unfazed.
Magic was already overwhelming enough. Seeing Miyuki in her underwear? No chance of staying composed. Not that it was about lust equaling love—more like it was all too confusing. At least she hadn't stormed the bathroom or snuck into his bed. That memory was sealed forever.
Yugen knew Shizuku was subtly flirting, but his unclear feelings made accepting risky. Half-hearted responses would hurt everyone, so he played oblivious. Kicking the can down the road, sure, but it was his only move.
Then there was the president. Word was, things weren't great with the Itsuwa heir, but did she have to ramp up the touchy-feely with him? Every time, Vice-President Hanzou Katsube no Joujou Hanzou's glares flew his way. Cool name, though—Hanzou was oddly shy about it.
"But Onii-sama, you got flustered when I teased you," Miyuki pointed out.
"Good," Yugen said. "Tatsuya's got normal instincts after all."
"Wait, what's that supposed to mean?" Tatsuya shot back.
All three were set for the Nine Schools—Tatsuya as technical staff, not an athlete, but a member nonetheless. Yugen, tasked with overseeing the rookie matches, was less thrilled. Not just strategizing but managing a bunch who badmouthed Tatsuya behind his back—Morisaki included—while slacking on effort. Honestly, he didn't want to deal with or even look at them.
He'd somewhat bonded with Morisaki over martial arts training with Miyuki. But using him as a middleman for Tatsuya? Nope. Maybe a mock battle to thrash Morisaki via school rules wouldn't hurt… but that'd spark more trouble. On hold for now.
"Worried you've got some weird fetish," Yugen teased.
"No need for that," Tatsuya said. "Fix your own denseness first."
"You're one to talk, Onii-sama," Miyuki quipped.
Feeling his facade crumbling, Yugen lowered his voice for just them.
"Alright, straight talk," he said. "I don't get romantic feelings. Might even say they're missing. Not artificial—probably genetic."
"Seriously?" Tatsuya asked.
"Why lie? I told you about my weird trait before, right?"
His abnormal hearing defined Yugen. Beyond a lack of past-life romance, his reincarnated self carried a deeper darkness. At seven, his superhuman ears caught every whisper, every insult, every rumor, breeding despair in humanity. His family—especially his decently normal sister—kept him from breaking. Maybe his previous soul couldn't handle it and faded. No way to ask now.
"Even whispers are crystal clear," Yugen said. "Before I controlled it, I heard everything—once, even a TV audience's murmurs."
"That strong?" Miyuki gasped.
Testing Kaleidoscope or Zone Enhancement on himself, he found familial and sibling love but no impulsive romantic spark. He thought it was inexperience, but no. Looking at women's photos—cute, beautiful, even arousing—never stirred true affection. In school, confessions from popular girls felt flat, no spark, no urge to try dating. He couldn't take that step.
Three years ago, meeting Miyuki, his tension came from knowing her background via past-life knowledge. Once that barrier fell, she slotted into "friendship." He could see her as a woman, feel attraction, but love? It wouldn't connect.
"Even you couldn't fix it?" Tatsuya asked.
"Can't fix what's never there," Yugen said. "That's god-tier, not magic."
His past-life romantic inexperience meshed with this trait, blocking love's spark. Hugging Miyuki didn't faze him because of it. Still, he'd caused enough phenomena to believe emotions could emerge. He wasn't hopeless—just needed a trigger. No need for a reincarnation perk to craft an emotion spell; that felt off.
"I know Shizuku's trying," Yugen said. "But in this state, half-answering would hurt everyone. I'll keep playing dumb for now. If she corners me, I'll come clean."
"…"
"That's your next-best move, huh?" Tatsuya said.
"Might catch a spark someday," Yugen said. "I'm not sweating it. Sorry for bumming you out after your big win. How about I cook tonight as an apology?"
The heavy talk was his fault, so Yugen offered amends. Miyuki, frantic, shouted at him.
"No way!" she cried. "Yugen-san, don't do anything! You stood in for me at the meeting, so let me handle Onii-sama's celebration! And I'm the only one who cooks for you!"
(Miyuki… do you hear yourself?) Tatsuya thought.
Tatsuya found Yuzen's denseness bad but Miyuki's no better. If they dated, what chaos would erupt? Oddly, it sounded… fun.
After a modest celebration dinner at the Shiba house, Yugen and Miyuki handled cleanup (Miyuki deemed Yugen safe for anything but cooking or baking). Left with nothing to do, Tatsuya sat alone in the living room when the phone rang.
Answering, he saw a military figure on the screen—Major Harunobu Kazama, commander of the 101st Brigade's Independent Magic-Equipped Battalion.
"Been a while," Tatsuya said. "Timed this on purpose?"
"Not my intent, but seems that way, Special Lieutenant," Kazama replied.
Calling him "Special Lieutenant" meant a secure line. Tatsuya continued.
"Last real-time talk was a month ago, about the Third Eye overhaul," Tatsuya said. "Using that title means a secure line. Impressive, sneaking into a general line."
"Not easy," Kazama said. "Your house's security is insane—our operators screamed. Matches our battalion's secrecy level."
"Hackers have no boundaries," Tatsuya said. "Counter-programs only trigger deep in."
The Shiba server had layered security, with counter-programs for deep breaches. Yugen's idea to offline critical data was a lifesaver, Tatsuya mused, before pressing Kazama.
"So, Major, what's up?"
"Heard you're in the Nine Schools," Kazama said. "Fuji Training Grounds, southeast area—same as always."
Decided three hours ago, yet Kazama's intel was fast. Military intercept systems, Tatsuya figured, keeping his face neutral.
"But be careful, Tatsuya," Kazama warned. "Suspicious traces in the area, plus sightings of possible international crime syndicate members. Timing suggests the Nine Schools as the target."
"International crime syndicate?" Tatsuya repeated.
After April's Blanche incident, now this. The Nine Schools was the likely target, as Tatsuya had already guessed.
"Mibu investigated," Kazama said.
"Mibu, as in Sayaka Mibu, First High second-year's father?" Tatsuya asked.
"Yeah. You talked a bit, I heard. Got off track. After retiring, Mibu joined the Cabinet Intelligence Agency's Foreign Affairs Division, handling foreign crime."
"—Surprising," Tatsuya said, genuinely.
He'd spoken to Sayaka's father post-hospitalization, sensing his guilt over "personal failings." More shocking was the military leaking to the less-friendly Cabinet Agency and Mibu's daughter's tangential ties to a terror group via subcontractors.
Kazama continued.
"Crime syndicates and terror groups differ, despite overlap. Sectionalism's a national flaw. Thanks to Gouzou-dono's mediation, cooperation's smooth. Mibu's intel points to a Hong Kong syndicate—'No Head Dragon.' I'll update if more comes."
"Please do," Tatsuya said.
Necessary intel, but Kazama's hesitant shift piqued Tatsuya's curiosity.
"One more thing, the real issue," Kazama said. "Tatsuya, convince Yuzen to take my calls."
"What'd you do to him? The April entrance ceremony?" Tatsuya asked.
Kazama's sheepish look confirmed it. Yugen had griped about being dragged into a Defense Academy demo, ruining his ceremony plans—like having the ladder yanked out mid-climb. Tatsuya, hounded by Miyuki as a proxy, was a victim too but kept that to himself.
"Third Eye's hardware update, sure, but he's handled all military jobs via Sanada or Fujibayashi flawlessly," Kazama said. "Anything else? He won't listen. Sanada, Yanagi, and Fujibayashi all said, 'That's on you, Major.'"
"With respect, Major, he lost his high school ceremony," Tatsuya said. "That's fair payback. He didn't cut ties entirely, which is generous."
Tatsuya's sharp tone surprised even himself. Yugen was the battalion's special tech advisor, but still a peer. Kazama's oversight deserved the cold shoulder. Tatsuya realized he was annoyed too.
"Fine, I'll talk to him," Tatsuya said. "No promises, and expect a punch."
"Understood. Thanks, Special Lieutenant. Tell Yugen I'm sorry. And regards to our mentor."
The screen went dark.
Relaying apologies, persuading Yugen, and passing mentor greetings—Tatsuya sighed at his thankless role.
