Chapter 35
Chapter 35
“Sister and Luwen will be here soon. They’re the important ones now.”
Just as I stepped away, feeling strangely that the blood scent wasn’t fading even though I’d closed the door, the Kans leader suddenly grabbed my wrist and flung open the office door.
“What are you doing?”
I tried to resist by planting my feet firmly, but I was pathetically dragged along by the brutishly strong Kans leader.
Having forcibly brought me before Father, the leader set the tone and said:
“Sometimes others can understand emotions more accurately.”
“How dare a Kans presume to know anything?”
My words came out harshly as irritation welled up. Everyone has their sore spots, and this guy casually touched mine.
“Yes, yes. I know you’re a noble young master, so go ahead and greet your father.”
“You don’t know anything about my relationship with Father. Stop meddling unnecessarily.”
“Of course I don’t know about that stuff. But.”
Suddenly, he grasped my chin. The leader’s face filled my vision. Even though I glared at him, annoyed by his unpleasant meddling, he looked at my face nonchalantly.
“You look like you’re about to cry.”
“Nonsense.”
“If you don’t want to regret it later, it’s best to be present at the moment of death. Take it from experience.”
“I won’t regret it.”
I won’t regret it because I don’t have a single good memory. He always showed me only his back. He said he couldn’t love me until the very end. So…
Damn it. Is my body’s age not keeping up with my mental age? Why are my eyes stinging? Not wanting to cry unsightly, I bit my lip hard. The leader released his hand from my chin.
I should leave now. I want to dash out right away. But why? Even though no one is stopping me anymore. I stood there as if nailed to the spot.
It’s a farewell I’ve prepared for over a long time. I thought I had sorted out my emotions, but I guess not? Why can’t I control my own feelings? I was really irritated. It’s unpleasant. It feels bad.
“…ha…”
That’s when I heard it. A very faint mumble.
Even though it wasn’t calling me, I was drawn to the voice and hesitantly knelt before Father.
“…”
But I didn’t know what to say. At this point, what words…
“…I…ren…”
Is his eyesight failing? He must think I’m Irene. Ha, it’s laughable. It’s so ridiculous I can’t even laugh.
“I’m sorry to disappoint you, but it’s Fei.”
“…Your… words… were… right…”
My words? No. Probably not. I should assume he’s still mistaking me for my sister. So this means Irene’s words were right. Father continued speaking intermittently with unfocused eyes.
“If… only… I had… accepted… a little… earlier…”
Blood trickled down the corner of Father’s mouth. I couldn’t understand a word he was saying.
“If you have something to say to Sister, I’ll relay it. So speak clearly. I can’t understand you.”
“I…ren… pro…mise…”
Father reached out his hand. The trembling fingertips looked weak, and it upset me.
I hate Father. I dislike you.
“Fei…”
I flinched.
I really… dislike you. I said I dislike you. I’m telling you I dislike you.
In the end, I didn’t take Father’s hand. His hand fell and hit the floor with a thud. Did blood splatter from that? My cheek felt damp. I wiped my cheek with the back of my hand and stood up.
As I turned around, I met eyes with the leader guarding the office entrance. He uncrossed his arms and said:
“You’re quite stubborn too, young master.”
He speaks as he pleases without knowing me.
“I told you not to meddle. You seem to be misunderstanding something, but you and I have joined hands only for mutual benefit. No, I’m the one helping you. I can achieve my goal with just a slight detour even without you. Don’t forget who has the upper hand, and which side is more desperate.”
“Hahaha! Seeing your change in honorifics, I must have hit the mark.”
The leader laughed loudly, cackling.
I intentionally came on strong to make him realize his place and never act so presumptuously again, but what’s with this glib attitude? It seemed like my words weren’t getting through at all, which made me upset, but I didn’t want to show any more agitation. If I did, he’d be certain that he had indeed hit a sore spot.
‘I’d rather not speak at all.’
I just turned my head away. Then the leader suddenly thrust his face close.
“Are you angry? I’m not trying to fight. It’s just that our guys are stubborn too. Pretending to be fine even when hurt. I ended up gathering these pitiful fellows one by one, and somehow our force grew this big.”
“So? Are you trying to say it’s okay to plunder other people’s property because you’re a group of pitiful people?”
“There’s no way the clever young master didn’t understand… You just don’t want to admit it? You have some childish sides.”
This guy keeps crossing the line. I pretended to brush past the leader, then suddenly spun around and kicked him in the shin. This much doesn’t count as being agitated, right?
“Ow! Aren’t you going too far?”
Seeing him clutching his leg and looking up at me made me feel better.
“Are you properly tracking my sister and Luwen’s positions?”
“We are. Do you know how much trouble we had because you gave us such a messed-up description of that kid Luwen or whatever?”
“You should blame your own lack of discerning eyes, why are you trying to pin it on me? Just try putting even a small scratch on Luwen. I really won’t let it slide.”
This is all for Luwen’s sake, so it’s pointless if the child gets hurt.
The leader grumbled as he followed me into the hallway.
“I told the guys who know how to move quietly to follow and protect the kid coming out of your room.”
This, I like.
“Boss! They’re coming!”
“They?”
That’s not referring to Irene and Luwen, is it? Along with my retort, the Kans who received my full gaze checked the leader’s expression. I couldn’t see the leader’s face since he was behind me, but judging by how quickly he corrected himself, it seems the leader gave him a look.
“No, I mean… the young lady and the young master.”
“Everyone, do well. If we can’t fool them here, it’s over.”
I said, extending my arm to the leader. The leader, who tightly grasped my forearm, took a deep breath. Seeing his stiff expression, I had a strong feeling that they might be caught if they act clumsily.
I’m worried… Should I just do everything myself? No, but there’s a limit to how much of a one-man show I can pull off. I think we need a different approach.
After pondering for a moment, a good idea came to me, and I suddenly said as I looked back:
“Take a sword and wear it at your waist.”
“But I don’t use swords?”
The leader gestured with his chin towards the huge axe on his back. He seemed very proud of his massive weapon.
But well… whatever. I just said what I needed to say.
“Listen carefully. Don’t say more than two words at a time. Just short answers. If you feel like you’re going to say more, just keep your mouth shut and maintain a fierce expression.”
This should reduce the awkwardness. I hope things go as I planned, but there are always variables. The sword was for dealing with those variables.
“If you judge it necessary depending on the situation, point the sword at my neck. Or I’ll give you a signal by kicking you in the shin.”
“You’re going to kick again?”
He’s already acting like he’s been hit when I haven’t even touched him yet.
“If you do well, you won’t get hit, right?”
“Do nobles have iron in their shoes or something?”
“Does talking nonsense help you relax? Then go ahead.”
The leader made a groaning sound and started muttering to himself. Listening closely, it was complaints about his shin hurting. I can ignore that.
A moment later. Commotion spread from the direction of the central staircase. I thought Irene and Luwen had arrived, but there was an unexpected person with them.
Why is Merin here? Didn’t she run away? How did she end up joining those two? Countless question marks floated up in an instant. But I couldn’t let it show, so I focused on carefully managing my expression.
I quickly put on a frightened expression and looked at the three of them.
“Young master!”
“Fei!”
“Eek! Young master!”
They all looked tired, but fortunately, they didn’t seem to be hurt. Instead, some of the Kans looked a bit injured.
I twisted my body, trying to pull my arm free from the leader’s grasp. Then, without hesitation, they all rushed towards me recklessly. The Kans tried to block them, but they were pushed back and fell with a single strike from Irene and Luwen.
The extras who didn’t even get to say their lines glanced at me right after falling. Ignoring their looks that seemed to ask if they did well, I waited until they were close enough, then gave up struggling and began to speak.
“Sis… sister… Fa-father, father…”
My voice trembled terribly, as if swallowing sadness. Unable to continue, I bit my lower lip.
That alone seemed enough for them to understand the meaning. Irene’s eyes wavered for a moment but soon hardened.
