[chapter 27] Life and Death (5)
Chapter 27
“What are you talking about…?”
Unconsciously cornered at the edge of the bed, I averted my gaze from his.
He couldn’t know. There was no way he knew about me.
“I, I’m Liberick Eldrian. As you already know.”
“That’s a name. I’m asking about your identity. Although I do have one hypothesis…”
Klaus tilted his staff slightly, and a chain of magic power emanating from its tip instantly wrapped around my arm.
“Ugh!”
“Bear with it for a moment, it will be over soon.”
I was dragged in front of Klaus in an instant.
Klaus grabbed my arm, flipped my palm over, and overlapped it with his own right palm.
No way.
A chilling premonition, along with a sharp, brief pain, passed through me.
“Ha. My hypothesis was correct.”
A drop of blood that had welled up on my palm formed the complex crest of the Rendaike family.
A bird with spread wings and a star…
I clenched my fist tightly, erasing the crest. I hadn’t expected to see this crest again.
Regardless of me erasing it, the same crest appeared on Klaus’s palm.
“How do you know this?”
That was the first question that came to mind.
I had only shown this family crest to Lishia. Because she wanted to remember it.
But how did Klaus know?
“Is that all you’re curious about? Fine, I’ll tell you.”
Klaus laughed emptily and sat back down in the chair.
I sat down on the bed, still clenching my palm.
It was both absurd and surprising that he had discovered my identity so easily.
“Lishia Erban left a record about Luther Rendaike and passed this crest on to me. She said if he were ever reborn, I would be able to recognize him.
And if I found him, she asked me to convey her gratitude.”
“…Is that so.”
The time I spent with Lishia Erban wasn’t very long, but it remained a powerful memory.
She believed in me and helped me accomplish my task.
In truth, I should have been the one to say ‘thank you.’
“So, then… you are Luther Rendaike.”
Even though he had confirmed it with his own eyes, Klaus seemed bewildered.
“Well, then several things make sense. Your unique constitution, your extraordinary magic power… And what the demonkind are trying to do by taking you.”
“I never imagined something like this would happen…”
I squeezed my eyes shut and covered my forehead with my hand. A throbbing headache surged.
“This isn’t your fault. Those bastards have been doing everything they can to break the Demon Emperor’s seal.”
“Being reborn was definitely a mistake. If it weren’t for me, this wouldn’t have… There’s only one way to solve this…”
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
Klaus grabbed my arm.
He forced me to look directly at him. His face, fearsomely contorted, was angry with me.
“Dying solves nothing. Damn it, it’s still hard to believe that you’re that unlucky magician Luther Rendaike, but fine, let’s say you are.
The fact that you’re reborn now as this little Luar kid means that even if you die here, you could be reborn in another body, doesn’t it? What do you think would happen if that baby who can’t even walk falls into the hands of the demonkind?”
“Ah…”
My eyes widened.
“The only reason you’re alive now is because your father is a knight of Prius and you’ve been able to receive a lot of help. Dying is meaningless. Unless you plan to stay dead.”
I could be reborn again if I die here?
I blinked and stared up at Klaus’s angry face.
In a way, it was a natural thought.
Just as I was reborn as Liberick, if Liberick dies, I could gain another life. Even with the same memories.
And as he said, that child might not receive any help when attacked by the demonkind…
“So survive somehow. That’s the only way we can do something about that damned Seal Sphere.”
As soon as Klaus finished speaking, a sharp alarm sounded from outside.
The same sound I heard on the white walls of Prion that day.
I felt like all the blood was draining from my body.
“What is it?”
Klaus’s complexion changed. He jumped up from his seat and looked outside the tent. Then he turned back to me and spoke with a hardened expression.
“Stay hidden here and don’t move. Survive tenaciously.”
He dashed out of the tent.
Simultaneously, the barrier Klaus had cast over the entire tent disappeared, and terrifying sounds from outside began to flood in.
“Attack! Block the south entrance!”
“Fire arrows! Don’t let them inside!”
The shouts and roars of the knights followed one after another.
As the alarm gradually subsided, the horrific cries of the demonkind mixed in.
I curled up under the covers and hugged my shoulders. My body felt cold.
“Uwaaagh!”
“Don’t retreat! Don’t show your backs!”
The laughter of the demonkind, the screams of the knights, the sounds of the campsite collapsing…
Even with my eyes squeezed shut against the noise pouring in from all directions, it was as if the scene was unfolding before my eyes.
Were they coming to take me again?
I desperately wanted to run away from this place, but my frozen body wouldn’t move.
Would Master Luwen be alright? The Black Knight Commander and Klaus? Would Ash… be safe?
‘Liberick.’
I jerked my head up at the welcome voice that suddenly entered my mind.
As I poked my face out from under the covers, I saw a large wolf entering the tent.
“Ash!”
He had bandages wrapped around his legs, but he seemed to be walking without difficulty. I was so glad to see him alright.
“What’s happening outside? Is everyone…”
‘It’s best not to go out. They’re looking for you.’
I knew it.
I bit my lip. I couldn’t shake the thought that all this was happening because of me.
The shouts and screams from outside were getting louder and louder.
‘Stay here. I’ll assess the situation…’
Growl…
At that moment, the ceiling of the tent tilted and collapsed on top of me in an instant.
The wooden poles supporting the tent snapped, and debris started falling toward me.
“Ah…!”
‘Liberick!’
Trying to avoid it, I missed my footing and rolled under the bed.
A tremendous roar struck my ears, and a thick cloud of dust rose. I huddled up and squeezed my eyes shut.
When the vibrations that pounded through my body finally ceased, I opened my eyes to find everything dark due to the collapsed debris.
Amidst it all, Ash was above me, holding up the fallen poles with his body.
“A, Ash.”
I reached out and touched the unconscious wolf’s neck. Ash didn’t respond, seemingly having lost consciousness.
No…
I reached out to hug him, but faster than I could, a cold hand grabbed my neck and pulled me out.
“Found you, little one.”
“Gasp…”
I choked, and my vision swam.
Under the sudden sunlight, black horns flashed above me.
It was a demon, with long, cold hands and arms.
Tall, with a white, hard, armor-like body, and four protruding black horns.
A form I knew well. Kylack. The Demon Emperor Verkith’s personal guard.
“Hide-and-seek is over.”
Grivis grinned, his red eyes gleaming.
Caught by the neck, I couldn’t even scream.
I struggled to escape Grivis’s grasp, but it was futile with my strength.
My breath grew short, and my vision began to fade.
“Liv!”
A longed-for voice came from somewhere.
Master Luwen? No, this was…
*Shwing!*
With a chilling metallic sound, Grivis’s arm was severed.
As black blood spurted above me, I saw my father’s face, holding a sword.
“Liv!”
Someone caught me as I fell to the ground. I gasped for breath in their arms.
“Liv, it’s okay. It’s alright now.”
Shuren hugged me tightly and whispered in my ear.
Hearing his voice, tears streamed down my face involuntarily.
He was wearing his knight’s uniform, holding a sword that had clearly seen many battles.
“Damn knights…!”
Grivis roared murderously, swinging his remaining arm.
*Clang!*
My father’s sword blocked the metallic arm, sparks flying momentarily.
My father pressed Grivis fiercely, as if about to cut off his remaining arm. His face was filled with rage.
“Instructor, I’ll help!”
A grim-faced Erner joined the fight. He lowered his body and, in an instant, lunged inside Grivis’s guard, swiftly cutting his abdomen.
Grivis grimaced and staggered back.
I couldn’t believe that my father, Erner, and Shuren were here.
I clutched Shuren tightly with trembling hands.
“Push them back! Let’s show these bastards who dared to crawl here what we’re made of!”
A woman’s shout, followed by a resounding roar, echoed. Just to the left.
The Red Knight Commander, Merian Cortis, was commanding the battlefield, wielding a blazing red sword.
Dozens of knights in red cloaks rushed toward the demonkind at her command.
The demonkind fighting the knights of the campsite faltered, overwhelmed by their fierce momentum.
The Red Knight Commander’s attack was truly terrifying.
Every time her flame-wreathed sword touched a demon’s body, it flared violently, instantly reducing the wicked flesh to ashes.
“Wait, this isn’t what we agreed…!”
“Retreat, retreat!”
Outnumbered, the demonkind began to flee one by one.
Grivis was no exception.
Having lost one arm, Grivis glared at me from within the flames.
“See you again, Liberick.”
Even amidst the deafening screams and shouts, that chilling voice pierced through, resonating clearly in my mind.
“Haa!”
As Erner swung his sword at Grivis, he deflected it with his arm and leaped back.
Then he plunged into the fleeing horde of demonkind and disappeared.
As soon as Grivis escaped, my father sheathed his sword and rushed straight to me.
“Liv.”
My father hugged me tightly.
“F, Father.”
I couldn’t stop the tears flowing in his warm embrace.
The fear, terror, and despair I had endured poured out as tears.
“Liv, I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…”
My father’s voice was hoarse and rough. His usually immaculate knight’s uniform, clean face, and neatly combed hair were all disheveled.
His appearance alone spoke volumes about how much he had searched and wandered to find me.
“I should have protected you. I should have prevented this from happening.”
No. It’s not your fault, Father.
Embracing my father’s deep regret, I cried endlessly in his arms like a child.
