Chapter 339: Both Sides Suffer_3
"Alas, excessive blood loss. You don't have a good doctor here to stop the bleeding; it's already fortunate he survived. As for whether he'll be able to procreate in the future, that's uncertain; I'm afraid he may have lifelong health issues because of this."
The doctor felt sorry for a young woman.
Hongji's father stumbled and nearly fell, but Hongji steadied him: "Doctor, Aunt Lai is still young, please think of something!"
Seeing the look on Hongji's father's face, the doctor understood that it was this man's concubine, not his son's wife. As a medical practitioner, he felt compelled to add:
"Eat more blood-nourishing medicine in the future, and a good rest might lead to a recovery. As to whether she can procreate afterward, that will depend on the patient's health."
The doctor didn't dare say too much, nor could he make any promises, as gynecology was not his specialty; stopping bleeding and saving lives were methods applicable to external injuries.
Upon hearing this, Hongji's father felt somewhat better, but just thinking about the loss of his son still caused him pain.
Hongji, worried about his mother's illness and even though his daughters had already seen her, decided to take the doctor to see his mother as well.
In his despondence, Hongji's father looked at his son, taking the doctor to see that old woman. His eyes carried hatred; both women were to blame for the incident that resulted in the loss of the son he had wanted.
If it hadn't been for his son's presence, Hongji's father might not have bothered with that old woman, preferring to let her suffer and die at home.
From then on, Hongji's father held a grudge against Mrs. Lai and stopped sleeping in her room altogether.
Aunt Lai had brought this upon herself. When she regained consciousness, she lay in bed, sick, and that room became her sickroom ever since.
In the room next door, the wet nurse and Ye Daidi shared one room, and Hongji's father occupied another, drowning his sorrows in alcohol ever since that day.
Sometimes Hongji tried to console his father, who had not treated him well since that day.
His father also stopped working outside, only drinking himself to sleep in his room and eating when he woke.
The dashing Old Master had suddenly become a drunkard, a lazy sloth.
In his helplessness, Hongji had no choice but to leave the household affairs to his wife, and his father merely lent a hand from time to time. They no longer took on carpentry work at home.
His father would occasionally accept a small job, but aside from this, Hongji had nothing to say regarding his father not working; he wanted him to enjoy his twilight years.
Mrs. Li was always busy with matters at home and the affairs of the estate.
Mrs. Lai had improved quite a bit. Though she could no longer speak as fluently as before, she wasn't bedridden. She was still able to use the toilet and didn't need help eating.
On the other hand, Aunt Lai was less fortunate, always bedridden, unable to manage her bathroom needs unassisted. She could eat without being fed but remained in poor health, continuously consuming medicinal soups.
What distressed her the most was the loss of her unborn child, while that old demon came out unscathed.
Ye Daidi, upon learning that the concubine was ill, didn't visit her either. It was unclear whether this child harbored resentment towards the concubine.
Trouble had befallen the Ye family, and the gossipmongers in the village were all spreading rumors. Mrs. Lai and Aunt Lai were said to be in a life-or-death struggle, just like in a drama about wealthy families.
Another rumor implicated the Ye Family's sisters as the perpetrators, but no one believed these claims.
There was evidence that Mrs. Li and her children were not present at the time of the incident, further corroborated by the workers.
When Mrs. Lai and Aunt Lai were poisoned, they both accused each other of administering the drug, each admitting to having tried to poison the other.
Everyone thought that the rumors were certainly targeting the Ye Family, particularly the Ye Family's sisters.
As spectators sought the truth, that day, the server turned away Ye Zhiwei, Big Pancake Face, and her two daughters, who felt they had lost face in front of so many people and sought revenge.
The women and men who were implicated by them felt that they were too foolish and paid them no heed.
After the incident at home, Ye Shiqi and her fourth elder sister still needed to go out when necessary, as there were still a few elder sisters at home to help out.
One day, as the two sisters were at the estate, Zhong Xingwang called them over.
"Brother Wang, do you have some news?" Ye Shiqi guessed it must be related to the house and their eldest sister.
"You clever sprite!" Zhong Xingwang wanted to pat Ye Shiqi's head but felt it was improper now that she was soon to be his sister-in-law.
"Did I guess it right?" Ye Shiqi asked with a hand over her mouth, smiling.
Ye Fengqi ???
Zhong Xingwang took out two opened letters from his pocket.
He didn't hand the letters to Ye Shiqi but told her:
"There's a house we've been keeping an eye on. We've held on to it for you to look at and decide. Also, our family has agreed; I've proposed to your eldest sister!"
"What house?" Ye Fengqi felt it was wrong for even her to be out of the loop.
With eyes sparkling, Ye Shiqi looked at Zhong Xingwang but didn't answer her fourth sister, and with a bounce, she said, "That's great! When can we go to see the big house?"
