Chapter 181 Waiting for You on the Other Side of the Wall
"What do you mean by that?" Rhydian's voice grew louder.
'What is going on there? Are they fighting?' I inhaled deeply, before hurrying back to the room, blood drained from my face, seeing Damon's fist tightened around Rhydian's collar.
"Why did she rush out of the room after she ate your food? Why are you always around her? What do you want from her? Answer me!" His murderous aura filled the room.
I rushed towards them and placed myself in their center. "Stop!" My fingers curled around Damon's fist before loosening his hold on Rhydian's collar.
"I just left the room a second ago and you're already fighting?" I stared at Rhydian before turning to Damon with my brows knitted together.
Their bodies were tensed, and Damon clenched his teeth, his gaze was intimidating and sharp… a pure definition of if looks could kill.
Even Rhydian, who seems cool on most occasions, looked angry, his brows furrowed together and his hands balled into a fist beside him.
"I should be the one asking you that question… What are you doing around Princess Aeris? Who are you to think it is okay to pester her around?" Rhydian's voice shook as he spoke, trying to restrain himself.
However, his question was like fuel to the fire I was trying so hard to quench.
Damon took a step closer, his body was so tense that it ruffled like it was changing. It happened so fast that I thought it was all in my head.
The temperature in the room dropped and it felt so cold that I had goosebumps all over me. Before Damon could utter a word, my finger flew to his lips.
"I thought you guys brought breakfast? Why are you giving me trouble?" My brows knitted together as my gaze met his stunned expression.
He looked down, staring at my slender finger like it had grown two horns, then he looked up at me again.
"But…"
"No speaking…" I glared at him. "I only went to the restroom to freshen up, does that warrant a fight now?"
"Freshen up?" Damon narrowed his eyes on me.
I inhaled deeply again, before pushing them away. "Yes, Damon…" I trailed off, knitting my brows together as my eyes scanned him. "... You are okay now," I muttered under my breath in disbelief.
He didn't look like someone who almost died last night… it almost seems like I was the one imagining all of it.
"After sleeping last night, I recovered tremendously," Damon said without batting an eye.
I smiled sheepishly at him. "I can see that."
I walked towards the table, pulling a chair out.
"Princess Aeris," Rhydian began. "After you finish eating, I'll take you back to the castle."
My fingers hovered above the bread, a lump forming in my throat. The main thought of returning was like a searing hot knife against my chest, it was too sad that I had no choice… or maybe I did.
'There is no way I can escape this, the best approach is to negotiate with the King, hopefully he will be reasonable enough to concede… if he will.'
"Are you going back now? What about me?" Damon's grim voice broke through my thoughts.
"You look better now, and of course I have to go back, I'm the princess and it won't be long before the King sends a search party. And about you…" I lifted my head to meet his gaze. "You can take care of yourself."
"Let me take you back… You don't have to go with him."
"Damon, I appreciate your gesture, but I want to go with Rhydian," I said, taking a bite from the bread, the calm in his eyes turned into one of pain and guilt.
I had no idea why I said that, it feels like a push and pull. One second I want to be next to him and the other one I want to be far away from him.
As much as I wanted to get to know him… I mean he was exactly my type, something at the back of my head told me to stay away.
"Do you really hate me that much?" A sad smirk formed on Damon's lips.
The question was like a mountain pressed on my chest, and I didn't hate him. It was just that I didn't know exactly what I felt for him. I only felt a strange pull towards him… he felt familiar but I am certain I have never met him before.
"I never said that." I avoided meeting his gaze.
Just as I was about to take another bite of the bread, a voice rang from outside the Cabin. "Princess Aeris, we know you are here, your presence is required in the court!"
"There comes the search party." I rubbed the side of my temple dramatically. The very thing that I had dreaded the most had happened.
I turned to Rhydian, who gave me a reassuring smile, and somehow it brought my mind to ease. I wanted to turn to Damon, but I was afraid of seeing the emotion in his eyes… it makes my heart ache in a way I can't explain.
"Tell them I am having my breakfast and I will go with them after I am done."
Rhydian gave me a nod, and he glanced at Damon before exiting the room.
"What do you think of the bread and scrambled eggs?" His hoarse voice cut through the silence, and I could hear the desperation of having a conversation in it.
"Good."
"You should be careful around Rhydian. He doesn't seem like a good guy, he must have a hidden agenda."
I scoffed before turning to face him. "Really? And what about you?"
"What about me?"
"Didn't you approach me because you think I look like Ember?"
A look of surprise flickered through his eyes. "I did… but you must know that I mean you no harm… but the case is not the same with him."
"You think he will harm me? To me, you look more suspicious than he does. Why do you think you can tell me who to hang out with and who not to?" I frowned in disappointment.
"I'm not trying to tell you who to hang out with or who not to, but what I meant was for you to be careful around him." he sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. Then, he walked closer to me, his eyes fixated intensely on me, making me shift in my seat.
"Em… Princess Aeris, just remember that if you want to run from this engagement, you can count on me… I'll be waiting for you on the northern side of the wall… every night." His voice lowered to a whisper.
My eyes met his, and I felt like I was being drawn into a deep abyss… one that rendered my senses useless.
"What do you say to that?"
His voice snapped me out of the stupor. "Why do you want to wait for me every night? What if I decide to go through with the engagement?"
Damon shut his eyes, as if he were battling with himself. "I will wait for you nevertheless, you just need to remember that someone is waiting for you on the other side of the wall."
