Travelling through worlds to heal hearts

Chapter 4: Chapter 1.4

The next few days flew by for Joey, his mind consumed by thoughts of Rael, who seemed to grow more enigmatic with each passing moment. After their lunch with Rishi and Maya, Joey couldn't shake the feeling that he was only beginning to uncover the layers of Rael's troubled past. Despite his attempts to connect, Rael remained elusive—both in presence and in emotion.

Joey felt like he was tiptoeing around a delicate situation, careful not to push too hard, yet he sensed that the truth lay buried deep within Rael. Today, however, he was resolved to find a way to break through those barriers.

Scene 1: The Unspoken Truth

Joey stood by the lockers after school, having spent most of the afternoon in the library, observing Rael as he sat alone, engrossed in his usual hefty book. It was a familiar scene, but Joey couldn't help but wonder if Rael even realized how much he anticipated their fleeting conversations.

As the bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Joey spotted Rael making his way toward the exit. His heart raced. This was his moment.

"Rael!" Joey called out, quickening his pace to catch up with him just outside the school gates.

Rael slowed down but didn't turn to face him. "What's up, Joey?" he replied, his voice steady, though Joey could detect a hint of caution beneath the surface.

Joey paused, unsure of how to approach the conversation. "You seem... different lately. I mean, I know you usually keep to yourself, but after meeting Rishi and Maya... it feels like there's more to your story than you're sharing."

Rael's posture stiffened, and for a moment, Joey feared he might retreat into silence. Instead, Rael spoke softly, almost as if he were confiding in himself.

"They don't know... how I really feel."

Joey's interest was piqued. "What do you mean? About Rishi and Maya?"

Rael nodded, still looking straight ahead. "They think I've moved on. But I haven't."

"Moved on from what?" Joey asked gently, stepping a little closer.New version:

Rael took a deep breath, his voice barely above a whisper. "Rishi. I've always... I've always had feelings for him. Feelings I can't control."

Joey froze for a moment. This was it. Rael had confessed—his feelings for Rishi were genuine. But Joey wasn't sure how to react. He had sensed Rael's emotions ran deep, but hearing it out loud felt different. "But Rishi doesn't feel the same way, right?" Joey asked cautiously.

Rael's expression faltered, and he finally turned to face Joey, his eyes filled with pain. "He never has. He knows, though. He's always known."

Joey's heart ached for him. He could see the years of unspoken words and hidden hurt in Rael's eyes. "That must have been tough... keeping it all inside for so long."

Rael let out a humorless laugh. "You think? It's easier than you might imagine. Pretend everything's fine, laugh along with them. It's not like they ever asked how I really felt."

Joey's mind raced. This was the key—the reason Rael was so guarded. He had never truly been seen by the people he cared about. Maya, Rishi—none of them had ever given him the chance to share his feelings. And now it was too late. Rael was caught in a web of unspoken words, tangled in his own heartache.

Scene 2: The Past That Haunts

Rael fell silent after that, his gaze returning to the ground. Joey could sense the weight of his emotions was almost unbearable. The sadness that filled the air was suffocating.

"Do you ever regret it?" Joey asked quietly, unsure where the question came from, but feeling the need to know.

Rael's lips twitched into a sad, almost bitter smile. "Every day. But what's the point in regret? Rishi's never going to see me that way. He never did, and he never will."

Joey felt a lump in his throat as Rael spoke with such finality. He wanted to say something to ease the pain, but he knew there was nothing he could do. The damage had already been done.

Joey shifted in his seat, feeling uneasy about the conversation but unsure how to steer it in a different direction without hurting Rael further. "Hey, this might sound a bit out of the blue, but... have you ever thought about doing something just for yourself? Something that brings you joy? Not for Rishi, not for anyone else. Just for you."

Rael looked at him blankly, as if the idea had never crossed his mind. "What's the point? Nothing's ever going to change."

"I believe... I believe you deserve something different, Rael. Maybe it's time to start considering what you truly want."

For a fleeting moment, Rael's expression softened, but it quickly vanished, replaced by his usual guarded demeanor. "I don't even know where to start."

Rael glanced at Joey for a moment, his voice barely above a whisper. "Thanks for being there. I... I really don't know what I would have done without you."

Joey's smile grew wider. "Anytime. I'm here for you."

Rael didn't say anything more, but Joey noticed a spark of gratitude in his eyes. It wasn't a lot, but it was enough to motivate him.

As Joey watched Rael walk away, a thought crossed his mind: Maybe this is why I'm here—to help him find joy, even if I'm just a small part of his journey.

He looked up, feeling the weight of his mission settle in his chest. There was still so much to accomplish, and time was slipping away.

But for the first time, Joey felt like he might actually be making a difference.

Joey felt a pang of empathy for him. "That's why I'm here. You don't have to face this alone."

Rael finally met his gaze, really connecting for the first time. For a brief moment, the barriers between them seemed to weaken, and Joey caught a glimpse of hope in Rael's eyes. It was brief, but it was there.

"I'll try," Rael murmured, his voice barely audible.

Joey smiled, experiencing a sense of achievement. It wasn't a huge step, but it was a step nonetheless. For the first time, Rael was open to trying. And that was a victory in its own right.

Scene 3: The Unspoken Words

As they walked side by side toward the school gates, the weight of their conversation lingered in the air. Joey understood there was still so much more to learn about Rael's past, but for now, this was sufficient. Rael had shared a piece of himself, even if it was just a small part. It was a beginning.
