Chapter 17: Chapter 17: The Martian's Mindscape and the Telepathic Link Protocol

Chapter 17: The Martian's Mindscape and the Telepathic Link Protocol

My role as Steward of the unified multiverse meant communication was key. And while my Empathic Resonance was great for sensing emotions, I needed something more direct, more secure. Telepathy. And the best telepath I knew was J'onn J'onzz, the Martian Manhunter. He was a master of the mind, a living bridge between thoughts.

I jumped back to National City, aiming for a time when J'onn was more established at the DEO, working closely with Alex and Kara. I needed Kara's help to facilitate this.

I found Kara at the DEO, looking stressed, as usual. She was reviewing some alien tech with Alex.

"Okay, Adam. No sneaking up on them. They're already stressed. Be a calming presence. Use that Empathic Resonance. And maybe offer to get them coffee. The good kind."

I walked in, making my presence known. "Rough day at the office, ladies? Looks like someone's trying to decipher a recipe for interdimensional kale smoothies again."

Alex jumped, reaching for her sidearm. Kara just sighed, but a small smile touched her lips. "Adam! You're getting really good at that. And yes, it's a particularly stubborn alien encryption. J'onn's trying to get a read on it."

J'onn J'onzz, in his human form, was standing by a console, his brow furrowed in concentration. His mental efforts were almost palpable, a subtle pressure in the air that only I, with my growing mental sensitivities, could discern.

"Director J'onzz," I said respectfully. "Perhaps I can offer a… conceptual assist?"

J'onn turned, his eyes, usually so stoic, held a flicker of surprise. He knew I was unusual. Kara had likely told him bits and pieces, but my presence was still an enigma.

"Mr. Stiels," he said, his voice deep and measured. "My apologies, but this encryption is proving… resistant to conventional methods. And to my own mental probes."

"I understand," I said, using my Empathic Resonance to subtly project a sense of calm and competence. I could feel his quiet frustration, the immense burden he carried for his people, for Earth. "Sometimes, a direct approach isn't enough. You need to understand the mind behind the encryption. The conceptual framework."

Kara stepped forward. "J'onn, Adam's… he's got some really unique abilities. He's helped me out with some things that… well, they shouldn't have been possible." She gave him a look that clearly said, Trust him. He's weird, but he's good.

"I'm looking to acquire a conceptual understanding of advanced telepathy," I explained to J'onn. "How you establish those clear, secure mental links. How you shield your mind. How you… truly connect with another consciousness. In exchange, I can offer insights into this encryption, or perhaps even a conceptual solution to a particularly stubborn mental block you're facing."

[INITIATING BROKERAGE PROTOCOL. TARGET: J'ONN J'ONZZ. RESOURCE: TELEPATHIC MASTERY. OFFERED: TELEPATHIC LINK PROTOCOL. COST: UNDERSTANDING OF HIDDEN IDENTITIES AND TRUST.]

"Hidden Identities and Trust. Oh, this is going to be a deep dive into J'onn's entire life story. All the secrets, all the pain, all the reasons he hides. This is going to be heavy. I should probably bring tissues."

J'onn's eyes narrowed slightly, not in suspicion, but in profound thought. He was a being of immense wisdom, and he understood the implications of what I was offering. "You wish to understand the burden of my existence? The weight of my secrets?"

"Not just the burden, Director," I clarified, my voice earnest. "But the strength. The profound trust it takes to reveal your true self, even when it's terrifying. The importance of genuine connection, even when you've been hurt. It's a powerful lesson. And it's one I need to understand if I'm going to effectively steward a unified multiverse where everyone has their own secrets and their own fears."

He looked at Kara, who nodded subtly, her eyes conveying her complete trust in me. Then, J'onn closed his eyes, a flicker of his true Martian form briefly visible beneath his human disguise. He sent a subtle, non-verbal thought, a feeling of immense, quiet pain, of centuries of hiding, of the profound loneliness of being the last of his kind. It was a conceptual memory, a raw, emotional truth.

This was the conduit. His shared vulnerability.

A profound expansion occurred in my mind. It wasn't just a skill; it was a new way of perceiving consciousness. I could feel the subtle currents of thought, the unspoken words, the hidden emotions beneath the surface of everyone around me. I could establish a clear, secure mental link, like a private, encrypted channel directly into another mind. And I felt the weight of J'onn's history, the burden of his hidden identity, the immense trust he placed in those he called family. It was a sobering, yet incredibly powerful, understanding.

"Holy cow. I can read minds. Not like, every thought, thank Rao, but enough to know if someone's lying about having eaten the last cookie. This is going to make staff meetings infinitely more interesting. And I also feel like I need to give J'onn a very large, very comforting bowl of Chocos."

J'onn opened his eyes, a faint, almost imperceptible nod. "You… you truly understand. The cost was… significant."

"Worth it," I said, my voice quiet, my gaze meeting his. "Every single bit. Now, about that encryption… I think I see a conceptual backdoor. It's tied to a specific emotional frequency. A Martian frequency, to be precise."

J'onn's eyes widened slightly. He looked at the console, then back at me. "You… you can see that?"

"Seamlessly," I confirmed, a small smile. "Shall we?"

He gave a rare, genuine smile. "Indeed, Mr. Stiels. Indeed."

I knew, in that moment, that I had gained not just a powerful skill, but a profound connection with one of the wisest and most empathetic beings in the multiverse. And the ability to have a completely silent conversation with Kara during boring DEO briefings. Priorities.
