Chapter 2: Echoes of Eligible Bachelors
After parting ways with Lu Sheng, Qin Ran didn't head straight home. Instead, she took the subway to the West District's Beautiful Impression. She and her friend had opened a clinic at the east gate of Beautiful Impression, and it was the busiest time around noon. Just as she stepped out of the subway station, her sister-in-law, Du Xiaomei, called.
"Qin Ran, where are you?"
"I'm near the Central Book City, sister-in-law, what's up?"
Du Xiaomei's voice was sharp and urgent: "I asked you to go on a blind date, you agreed, so why didn't you go? You stood him up?"
Qin Ran was baffled: "I did go, not only did I go, I also..."
"Go where? He waited for over two hours and still hasn't seen you?"
Du Xiaomei quickly cut her off: "You better come back and explain yourself clearly."
"Sister-in-law, I..."
Qin Ran thought the matter could be clarified over the phone, but Du Xiaomei hung up abruptly. Qin Ran hurriedly called back, but each time it rang twice and then went to voicemail, clearly not accepting her calls. Helpless, Qin Ran could only send a message to Zhao Lin saying she had something urgent and then rushed back.
As soon as she got home, Du Xiaomei hurriedly pulled her towards the door.
"Sister-in-law, where are you taking me?"
Qin Ran was startled by Du Xiaomei's frantic demeanor.
"Where? You tell me where?"
Du Xiaomei was both angry and anxious: "You agreed to a blind date but didn't show up, making him wait for over two hours. Don't you think you should apologize and redo the date?"
"What?"
Qin Ran couldn't believe her sister-in-law would do something so outrageous. Even if she had mistaken the date today, couldn't she just apologize over the phone? Forcing her to go to the man's house like this, wasn't that just embarrassing herself? Between a man and a woman, the one who takes the initiative naturally holds a lower status.
Seeing Du Xiaomei and Qin Ran visit, Yang Cheng showed a look of arrogant disdain. He knew that people living in old neighborhoods would be envious upon learning he lived in a high-end community. Sure enough, just after calling them uncultured, they came knocking on his door.
Zhang Shufang, Yang Cheng's mother, upon understanding the intentions of Qin Ran and Du Xiaomei, acted superior. "If your sister-in-law wants to marry my son, she must have a child before marriage, otherwise, there's no discussion."
Hearing this condition, Qin Ran's face immediately turned cold. Have a child first? Are you marrying a wife or a surrogate?
Du Xiaomei gritted her teeth and agreed on behalf of her sister-in-law: "That's no problem." As long as the other party was willing to marry Qin Ran, having a child first was fine, after all, it wasn't her who would be bearing the child.
"And the housework, cleaning two floors, three meals a day, shopping and cooking, and washing clothes for the whole family." Yang Cheng's father also spoke up.
Qin Ran's expression grew increasingly grim. Isn't marriage supposed to be a mutual agreement? She didn't dare to expect complete gender equality, perhaps her income wasn't as much as the man's, but she shouldn't have to bear all the housework, right? It made her seem like she couldn't get married and was begging to be taken.
Du Xiaomei's face also showed some embarrassment. But thinking about the 500,000 dowry the other party would give, she felt it was worth it. "Alright, no problem, Xiao Ran is great at housework." Du Xiaomei again agreed on Qin Ran's behalf.
Seeing Qin Ran's cold expression, she quickly held her down, not giving her a chance to speak. Her sister-in-law was beautiful, and while she was young and fresh, she could fetch a higher dowry, which would help secure her brother's future marital home.
"Also, since both parties have no objections, let her move in in a couple of days. We'll pay half the dowry first, 250,000, and the other half after the child is born and they get married." Yang Cheng also made his demands. He was very satisfied with Qin Ran, young and beautiful, 12 years younger than him, the ideal young wife he had always dreamed of.
Qin Ran couldn't sit still any longer and immediately retorted. "Are you marrying a wife or a surrogate? And today was just a blind date, not a marriage discussion. I'm not marrying an older man!"
"Look, look at your sister-in-law, what kind of attitude is that?!" Yang Cheng's mother shouted excitedly: "She's like this before even entering the door, what will she be like after?"
"Sorry, sorry, she's still young, she'll change!" Du Xiaomei still wanted to continue the discussion. Because the Yang family's conditions were too good, and they were willing to give a dowry of 500,000. Her brother was short 200,000 for the down payment on a house, and she urgently needed that 200,000 to help her brother.
"Brother, don't forget about me." Unexpectedly, Yang Cheng's sister also jumped in: "My clothes must be hand-washed, ironed after drying, and the embroidery on my dress, sister-in-law, you'll take care of that."
Qin Ran exploded on the spot. "Am I marrying you, or your whole family? Just make me a servant!"
Originally just a vent, Yang Cheng directly responded: "Haha, you said it yourself, then when you move in, we'll fire the hourly worker, don't complain about the housework being tiring."
"Leave! I'd rather marry a farmer than a self-righteous rich man like you!" Qin Ran was so angry she flipped the table. The usually good-tempered her, completely exploded. What a bunch of freaks, wanting to marry a wife?
"Look! Such a temper, just a rude woman, and you think you can marry me? Dream on, I'd rather marry an unattractive woman than a wild one like you!" Yang Cheng also didn't hold back, mocking Qin Ran relentlessly. He felt with his conditions, marrying a young and beautiful college student was no problem.
"Goodness, I didn't want to marry you either!" Qin Ran snorted coldly, turned around, and walked straight out the door!
Du Xiaomei quickly chased after her, trying to pull Qin Ran back to apologize, but Qin Ran shook off her hand. The two returned home in a cold war, and as soon as they entered, Du Xiaomei angrily yelled at Qin Ran.
"Are you blind? Didn't you see what kind of conditions the Yang family has? Bright Moon Garden, over 70,000 per square meter, the Yang family has a two-story duplex, 150 square meters, worth over ten million."
"Such good conditions, and you refuse to marry, who do you think you are?"
Qin Ran was angered by her sister-in-law, but thinking that her sister-in-law was the one who would accompany her brother for life, she tried her best to restrain herself.
"Sister-in-law, you also saw what kind of people they are, they are rich. But does being rich mean they can treat the poor like dogs? Also, today you asked me to go on a blind date, I did go, I went to table 11, but why wasn't Yang Cheng at table 11, I have no idea."
Du Xiaomei stared at her wide-eyed: "You really went?"
"Yes, there are surveillance cameras at the entrance of Huiyue Pavilion, you can check the footage if you don't believe me."
Qin Ran looked seriously at Du Xiaomei: "Moreover, I successfully had a blind date, you don't need to arrange any more for me."
"What?!"
