Chapter 14 - Mistake (3)
The dawn’s bluish light was palely coloring the city’s concrete walls.
The soldier, who had been taking a nap wrapped tightly in a sleeping bag to avoid the chilly dawn air, opened her eyes.
Perhaps due to lying on the hard ground, the soldier’s back creaked and screamed as she got up.
With pain throbbing as if she’d been beaten, the soldier irritably patted her back and put on her helmet.
She slung the rifle that had been leaning against a building pillar over her shoulder and went outside into the cold wind, where a blonde comrade greeted her.
“You’re up, Yuri.”
“Yeah. It’s a shitty morning, Natasha. Nothing happened overnight?”
“Not even a mouse. I’m going to catch some sleep inside now.”
“Good work.”
Yuri patted the shoulder of Natasha, who was trudging back into the building with bloodshot eyes from standing watch all night.
As Natasha was clumsily crawling into her sleeping bag, she casually said to Yuri as if she’d just remembered:
“I boiled some water, so heat up your combat rations yourself.”
“Okay.”
Nodding at Natasha’s words as she collapsed with a groan, Yuri checked her wristwatch.
5:40 AM.
It was a bit early for breakfast, but in a situation where the enemy could attack at any time, worrying about meal times was a luxury.
Yuri took out a combat ration pack from her backpack, poured hot water from the kettle, and then tossed it in a corner for a moment while she surveyed the street.
As a result of the tedious urban warfare that had been going on for months, the city was so damaged that it could no longer remind one of its pre-war appearance.
Vehicles abandoned by citizens had been turned to rags by gunfire and shelling, and buildings had their outer walls collapsed and paint peeled off, exposing cold concrete.
After two World Wars, all of humanity had witnessed the horrors of war with their own eyes.
The United Nations was born to prevent such a tragedy from repeating, and since then, the world had regained peace except for local conflicts in Third World countries.
Too much time had passed since then, those who remembered the devastation of war had grown too old, and the world believed without doubt that this peace would continue forever.
The world was overly believing in a false peace that was maintained only by national interests and justifications.
Yuri’s homeland had suddenly become a battlefield due to the enemy country’s sudden attack.
She fought her best at the front lines as a soldier, but the gap in troop size and armament level was hardly narrowing.
They were barely maintaining the frontline with support from the international community.
It was quite a miserable and desperate situation.
“Well, another day with nothing special in sight.”
But perhaps due to being mentally worn out from rolling around the battlefield,
Yuri picked up the heated combat ration pack indifferently, as if unimpressed.
Bang-!
“!”
At the sharp noise that came in a split second, Yuri threw the combat ration to the floor and lowered her body.
Concrete dust was swirling hazily near the wall where she had been sitting.
Discovering a clear bullet mark engraved on the wall, Yuri immediately shouted at the top of her lungs towards her comrades inside the building.
“Enemy! Everyone prepare for combat!”
“What the fuck?!”
“Enemy attack! Enemy attack! To your positions!”
Surprised by the sudden shout, soldiers jumped out of their sleeping bags and quickly armed themselves.
The initial confusion was brief; seeing them all ready with tense faces and running to their designated positions showed they were all clearly veterans.
Bang-!
Crack-!
As the enemy’s bullet shower gradually intensified, Yuri, feeling urgent, shouted towards Natasha who was staggering with tired eyes:
“Natasha! Quickly go upstairs and grab the sniper rifle!”
“Damn it all… I was just trying to get some sleep…”
After confirming that Natasha was running to the stairs while grumbling irritably, Yuri carefully tried peeking by slightly moving her upper body near the window frame.
Bang-!
“Shit.”
Startled by the incoming bullet, Yuri hid her body behind the safe concrete wall.
The timing was quite close, but it was enough to confirm the enemy’s muzzle flash.
“Enemy confirmed beyond the hospital wall at 11 o’clock! Return fire immediately!”
“Reloading!”
“Yelena, if you’ve got the machine gun, let it rip!”
“This damn piece of junk, the ammo’s jammed again!”
In the building echoing with shouts and gunfire, Yuri took a deep breath, feeling frustrated.
As the cold dawn air squeezed into her chest, which felt as heavy as if a stone had been placed on it, she felt her breathing ease a little.
“Well, let’s try our best to survive once more.”
Just as we’ve stubbornly survived until now, today too.
.
.
.
.
.
“Oh, it’s started.”
-Ooooh
-Finally
-Info) MILSIM’s campaign is rumored to have a tough difficulty
After a brief cutscene and setting explanation, the game started immediately.
Brief and quick progression, I like it very much.
After suffering so much in the tutorial, now even slightly long dialogue makes me sick.
[Enemy spotted at 12 o’clock!]
[Reloading!]
“Oh, focus! Focus!”
Now that the game has started, let’s stop complaining and concentrate on the monitor.
It would hurt my pride to die while spacing out in the first mission.
[Yuri! They’re moving across the street!]
“It seems I’m controlling Yuri.”
Judging by the dialogue, it seemed the game was progressing with me controlling Yuri, the black-haired soldier who appeared in the cutscene.
I immediately moved the character to take cover behind a thick concrete wall and checked the armament.
“What kind of gun is this?”
Looking at the shape, it seems to be from the AK series, but since there are so many derivatives in the series, it was difficult to know exactly which model it was.
There’s also a possibility that the developers modified the design based on an existing firearm.
-Looks like an AK-12?
-It’s labeled as AK-12 in the loadout
-It looks like a mix of various AK types though
-What kind of hybrid is this…
“Ah.”
As I was tilting my head in doubt alone, viewers immediately provided the answer.
It must not have been easy to perfectly model the guns by collaborating with firearms companies for game development.
As expected, the developers seem to be people obsessed with historical accuracy.
“Let’s continue with the game for now. I should return fire from here, right?”
-Yes yes
-Go go
“Alright, here we go!”
Deciding to return fire to the enemy, I immediately and boldly leaned my upper body to the side and pulled the trigger.
If a regular infantry wants to survive in urban warfare, the answer is to act as soon as tactical thoughts come to mind.
If you hold back while considering various variables, you’ll lose the initiative to attack to the enemy, and as a result, it lowers your survival probability.
Above all, when infantry fight each other, the outcome is often determined by the number of muzzles spewing fire.
This means that gaining fire superiority is very important.
To avoid the worst-case scenario of losing the initiative by hesitating unnecessarily, I sprayed rifle bullets towards the alley where the enemies were visible.
Ratatata-!
-?
-?
-Full auto for this?
-What’s wrong with the host…?
-Are you sick somewhere?
“Okay, pulling back for a moment.”
While the chat window was mostly filled with bewildered reactions to my recent spray, I had no time to pay attention.
An allied AI who finished reloading jumped to where I was and started firing, and I pulled back for a moment to check the situation inside the building.
So far, none of the allied AIs were wounded, and they were all steadily projecting firepower from their positions.
On the other hand, the enemy side?
Three troops were mowed down by machine gun fire while recklessly trying to cross the road.
The rest couldn’t even dare to poke their heads out from behind cover due to the continuous suppressing fire from our side.
[Reloading!]
“Okay. Now it’s my turn.”
As soon as the allied AI with an empty magazine pulled back, I, who had been waiting on the side, leaned my upper body towards the window to fill the empty spot.
It’s okay if the bullets don’t hit the target.
As long as bullets keep flying, the opponent can’t move freely.
Simply continuing to fire can exert sufficient anti-personnel suppression capability.
Not giving the opponent a chance to counterattack with continuous pressure.
This is the core of infantry tactics.
“Alright… Let’s see…”
Taking advantage of the enemy’s disorientation from our suppressing fire, I decided to hit them with precise shots.
I switched to single fire mode, shouldered the rifle, and closely observed the area near the wall where the enemies were hiding.
“Bingo.”
It didn’t take long to find the target.
I didn’t hesitate to pull the trigger towards the military boot sticking out from the edge of the wall.
Bang-!
[Aagh!]
Ratatata-!
The enemy soldier whose toes were blown off lost balance and fell, exposing his whole body defenseless.
Not missing this opportunity, I quickly and accurately fired three bullets into the enemy’s body.
The enemies are wearing body armor, but it’s impossible to withstand three consecutive rifle bullets.
[Nice shot, Yuri!]
“Yeah. Confirmed kill too.”
Roughly agreeing with the enthusiastically cheering allied AI, I put an additional bullet into the head of the enemy soldier lying on the ground.
Bang-!
Even from a distance, I could clearly see the enemy’s face being smashed and flesh flying in all directions.
-Ugh wtf
-Head exploding wow
-This is too cruel
“Now I see why this game is rated adults only…”
The production team is serious about gore effects too.
How much do they love military stuff?
“…Hmm.”
As the sense of realism was much more intense than I thought, I started to feel a sense of crisis creeping up.
This, if I play for too long, might it be a little dangerous mentally?
