Chapter 7 - Cohabitation
“Come in for now. I’ll say it again, but since I just finished moving yesterday, the house isn’t organized, so it’ll be a bit messy.”
“It’s fine.”
As I opened the front door bringing Iris in, the characteristic musty smell of a semi-basement hit my nose.
Entering the dimly lit living room and pressing the light switch, the bright light of the fluorescent lamp illuminates the house.
A miserable sight of boxes scattered around just as they were when I left earlier.
Honestly, it wasn’t a house state suitable to show others, but it couldn’t be helped.
Walking around outside continuously drew too much attention to our white hair.
Excessive attention feels quite uncomfortable to me.
Not only do I not enjoy having attention focused on me, but I feel even more averse to it having experienced it to the point of nausea on the battlefield.
At that time, there were only two types of looks people gave me.
Either revering and respecting, or fearing and hating.
I was clearly an ordinary citizen of the Republic of Korea.
Suddenly being treated as Solomon’s human weapon, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of disconnection.
Anyway, I don’t really like people staring at me.
So I brought Iris to my house, but.
“…”
“…”
Being alone in the same space with someone was quite awkward.
The fact that the other person was of the opposite sex seemed to double that awkwardness.
I wish Iris would at least say something.
I glanced at her face, but Iris’s mouth remained tightly closed with no intention of opening.
It’s really strange.
On the battlefield, it was fine living in the same space with squad members.
I didn’t think anything of changing clothes in the same space with them.
Why am I so tense now?
I spoke first, trying to escape this uncomfortable situation somehow.
“Iris, as you can see, there aren’t many rooms. This is my bedroom, and opposite is the bathroom. The kitchen is inside.”
“Can I sleep with the Leader?”
“Uh… I don’t mind, but… there’s only one bed…”
“I’m fine sleeping on the floor.”
Saying that, Iris went into my room with her bag.
There was not a hint of hesitation in her gait.
It should be fine sleeping in the same space since we experienced it a lot on the battlefield.
Convincing myself like that, I followed Iris into the room.
.
.
.
.
.
“Really… is that all your luggage?”
“?”
“No, nevermind…”
Iris’s unpacking took less than 5 minutes.
I didn’t think it would be true that she only packed underwear, casual clothes, passport, and wallet as she said.
It’s quite headache-inducing that she’s saying she’ll stay for a year like this.
I don’t know anymore.
Trying to understand Iris, who was originally from the fourth dimension, is a wrong approach in itself.
During our time in Solomon, Iris would play by making all sorts of strange sculptures out of rolling metal scraps during rest times.
The most memorable one was the Abrams tank.
The mini tank she made by bending and fitting metal fragments picked up from the field showed details of moving turret and tracks.
All the squad members were amazed and admired it, but she just dismantled it again.
When I checked later, she was bending the parts from the dismantled mini tank to make a fighter jet.
And this was while we were hiding in temporary cover under concentrated bombardment from Jibro forces.
I shook my head lightly and asked Iris.
“Was everything alright back home?”
“Yes.”
“Nothing special happened with your family?”
“I had meals with my parents, met friends, and took Daisy for walks.”
“That must have been nice.”
“…”
Iris didn’t answer my last comment.
She’s probably considering my feelings.
She knew I didn’t have a family.
Because when we were alone in Solomon, we talked about various things including family stories.
Iris’s reaction when I told her I didn’t have a family was quite interesting.
It’s more memorable because it was the first time she, who always seemed somewhat dazed and blunt, showed bewilderment and restlessness.
Feeling that Iris might be uncomfortable if I kept my mouth shut, I threw out any words.
“Have you eaten?”
“I was eating ramen earlier…”
“Ah.”
Slap-
A crisp sound echoed as I hit my forehead with my hand.
When we just met at the convenience store, Iris was eating ramen.
Somehow, it seems my head is getting worse since being shot in the head.
Anyway, it seemed there was no need to take care of Iris’s lunch.
Just as I was about to ask Iris about her future plans.
“Oh…”
Suddenly, one fact crossed my mind.
“I haven’t had lunch?”
“Pardon?”
Iris was startled, widening her eyes at my inadvertent mutter.
Why are you so surprised again?
“No, actually I went to the convenience store to buy cup noodles. I didn’t expect to run into you there…”
“Ah… Th-then should I cook something for you?”
“No, no! There are no ingredients to cook with at home, so sit down!”
I grabbed Iris’s arm as she was about to jump up and run to the kitchen, sat her back down, and checked the time.
3:11 PM.
It’s a bit late to have lunch.
Actually, the main reason is that I’m too lazy to walk back to the convenience store, but what does it matter?
“I’ll just skip lunch.”
“What? But even so, if you skip a meal…”
“It’s fine, it’s fine. It’s not like we’re in the field, how much calorie consumption could there be? I’ll just order a lot of delivery food for dinner.”
I threw out any words again to calm down Iris who was fidgeting in her seat.
Iris sat back down looking a bit calmer at my words, but she was still looking at me with an expression tinged with discomfort.
Feeling like this would go on endlessly, I chose to retreat first.
Getting up from the bed and sitting in the chair in front of the desk, I casually said to Iris.
“I’m going to use the internet for a bit. If you have anything to do or want to do, feel free.”
“…”
Iris was still looking at me with a bewildered expression.
Finding that quite cute, I inadvertently let out a chuckle.
“Really, it’s okay to be comfortable. You said you’re going to stay with me for a while, right?”
“Uh… Um…”
Until the computer finished booting up, Iris was awkwardly kneeling on the floor covered with a blanket.
I feel uncomfortable seeing her continue to show this attitude.
As I was wondering what to do, Iris’s cautious voice reached my ears.
“Um, Leader…?”
“Yes?”
“Could you tell me the Wi-Fi password…?”
“Ah.”
Slap-
I had no choice but to hit my forehead again.
.

.
.
.
Before I knew it, night had fallen in Seoul.
The city center is beautifully sparkling, wrapped in brilliant lights, and people enjoy their leisure in their own ways in their respective places.
But sadly, I can’t blend in among them.
Because I don’t have money.
The salary I received for fighting like hell in Solomon is about 500,000 won in Korean currency.
Before joining the Cerberus platoon, I fought while receiving 300,000 won.
It was by no means a large amount, so my current financial situation was quite poor.
This means I can’t even imagine going out to the bustling streets to have fun.
In the end, all I could do was hole up at home and eat chicken with Iris.
“Is this… Korean seasoned chicken?”
“Yeah. Do they have chicken in France too?”
“There are franchises, but… they’re not popular. The perception of fast food is quite negative in France.”
“Are you okay with it?”
“Yep.”
“Well… you like cup noodles too…”
While I was pouring cola into cups, Iris was staring intently at the beautiful red appearance of the seasoned chicken in the box.
I handed her a glass filled with cola and passed her a large chicken leg.
I should politely yield one leg.
If I eat both legs alone when we’re eating one chicken between two people, I’d have no excuse even if I got hit in the face with a lead bullet.
“Thank you for the meal…”
Iris, who briefly gave a pre-meal greeting, brought the chicken leg to her mouth with an expression full of anticipation.
I feel needlessly tense observing her reaction.
“…Nom.”
Finally, Iris took a bite of the chicken leg meat.
After chewing for a while.
“…?”
“…What?”
Iris stared at the chicken leg in her hand with a blank expression.
Just as I was getting very tense at her behavior, which I couldn’t understand at all, Iris opened her mouth.
“What… is this…?”
“Does it not suit your taste…?”
“No, no… that’s not it…”
Iris, who had been looking back and forth between the chicken and me, said with a puzzled expression.
“It’s fucking delicious.”
For a moment I was flustered thinking I had stepped on a landmine, but thankfully, it seems the seasoned chicken suited Iris’s taste.
I don’t know what most French people’s tastes are like, but one thing for sure is that Iris’s taste is really unique.
Even when we were staying in Solomon, she loved it so much when I boiled cup noodles for her once.
She, who likes stimulating food, had a tendency to go crazy especially for spicy food.
It relieves stress or something.
Anyway, she devoured 2 wings and one leg in an instant.
Of course, she couldn’t eat the breast meat saying it was too dry.
In the end, I struggled to finish what was left while stuffing pickled radish into my mouth.
Maybe I should order wingbons next time.
I cleaned up the trash while thinking such trivial thoughts.
Iris seemed quite uncomfortable seeing me work alone and was fidgeting trying to do something by my side.
The problem is that she keeps clinging to me, tangling our movements and hindering the cleanup.
Finally, unable to bear it anymore, I gave her an order in a commanding tone.
“Go shower first while I do the dishes. There are towels in the cabinet next to the sink, so take one and use it.”
“Understood.”
At that, Iris quickly ran to the room to grab her clothes and disappeared into the bathroom, just like in the old days in Solomon.
Somehow, her behavior reminded me of the times when we used the bathroom in turns with squad members in the field, making me chuckle.
Like me, she also seemed to be still bound by the past.
Probably all our squad members are like that.
Because the memories of the battlefield are so intense and vivid.
“I wonder what the others are doing…”
Suddenly, I missed the Cerberus squad members we parted with at the airport.
I wonder if they’re all having a hard time adapting.
I think I miss them more because they were the first people I could call family in my life.
People who could trust each other and watch each other’s backs.
The faces of those women who truly understood each other kept wavering before my eyes.
I should probably contact the members soon.
We should chat and exchange recent news.
Scrub-
Scrub-
As I wiped the last remaining bowl under running water, I muttered to myself.
.
.
.
.
.
In the deep night when everyone was asleep.
A woman quietly raised her body in the darkness.
Due to the poor lighting characteristic of semi-basements, even the streetlight from outside seeped in dimly, only illuminating the woman’s silhouette.
The woman, who had been sitting still in place for a moment, slowly turned her head to look at the bed.
As her face turned towards the window, her appearance, which had been hidden in dark shadows, was faintly revealed.
A woman with white hair and sparkling black eyes.
It was Iris Michelle.
Where her intense gaze was directed, a man was sound asleep.
White hair with a glossy sheen and long eyelashes.
Kim Sung-hyun, a man with an appearance that could be mistaken for a short-haired woman at first glance, was in deep sleep.
Deep desire began to swirl in Iris’s eyes as she looked at Sung-hyun.
In fact, from the moment she entered his house, she had been forcibly suppressing her trembling heart.
How could she not be nervous when staying alone with the man she loves more than anyone?
Slowly, Iris’s upper body leaned towards the bed.
“Huh…”
Towards Sung-hyun’s defenseless sleeping face, Iris’s flushed face gradually approached.
Her breathing was becoming uncontrollably rapid.
So lovely.
Should I just kiss him?
Iris, who was muttering to herself with a faint smile without realizing it, carefully stroked Sung-hyun’s cheek with her finger.
“Hup…!”
At the soft sensation felt on her fingertips, she hurriedly inhaled and covered her mouth.
Happy.
So happy I could go crazy.
Now no one can interfere with her.
The squad members who were eyeing Sung-hyun covetously are not here.
Here, there are only the two of them, her and Sung-hyun.
Thus, Iris’s lips, having lost self-control, fiercely rushed towards Sung-hyun.
