Veteran Streamer in a Reversed World

Chapter 8 - Sniper's Distance

“Huh… Huh…”
I exhale rough breaths, clutching my heart that feels like it’s about to burst.
Sweat drops flowing from my forehead keep getting into my eyes, so I wipe them off with the back of my hand.
Overwhelmed by the approaching fear, I want to blow my brains out with a bullet, but my body, frozen in fear, couldn’t even perform the simple task of pulling out a pistol and pulling the trigger.
“Sip… Haa…”
My head feels so hot I think I might die from the heat.
The chin strap choking my neck made breathing even more difficult.
Tak-
“Fuck…”
Cursing, I undid the chin strap and took off my helmet, and the air that had been stuffy until just now feels cool.
“Whew…”
I wiped my sweat-soaked face with my sleeve and slowly looked around.
A cramped room in an ordinary house.
The unique pattern decorating the wall was ruined by bullet holes, and the carpet on the floor was stained red with my comrades’ blood.
“…Rose.”
Turning my head with difficulty to the right, I see Rose’s face, sleeping with her head leaning on my shoulder.
Her face, covered in dust, was full of small wounds, and dark circles had settled under her soft eyes.
A precious comrade who fought with me from the moment we first trained.
The life-saving benefactor who helped me escape when our Humvee was ambushed.
The person who comforted me when I fell into panic at the shocking sight of Raimi dying in my arms.
She always shone, encouraging those who survived even in the horrific situation where countless soldiers died every day.
However.
At this moment.
In this hell where all comrades died in an instant.
She was exhausted.
“Mmm…”
“…?!”
Rose, who had been groaning softly while rustling as if uncomfortable, stirred.
No.
Don’t get up.
Tup-
“Ugh…”
“Sorry…”
I hurriedly grabbed her head and put it back on my shoulder, then looked at the window above with trembling eyes.
I held my breath and waited for a while, but fortunately, no bullets came flying.
The time when the sky is stained with red sunset.
The sun is shining from our side towards other buildings, so there must be problems with the snipers’ visibility.
This might be our chance.
The bustling area we carelessly entered while moving through the city in Humvees with new squad members.
There was an ominous atmosphere in the street where there were no living people and only corpses rolling on the road, so we decided to detour instead of breaking through.
Just as we were about to turn the car around.
An RPG that came flying from somewhere hit Vehicle 1.
Vehicle 5, which was at the very rear, tried to quickly reverse after assessing the situation, but the formation got tangled when the driver was killed by a bullet that penetrated the front windshield.
The Humvee’s armor is not very thick.
When rifle bullets came flying from the side, they would make holes right through the door panels, and bullets coming from the front would break through the front glass and threaten the lives of the occupants.
In the end, we had no choice but to disembark from the Humvees and use the vehicles as cover.
At least we could avoid becoming beehives while trapped in the cramped interior.
Our squad’s first casualty also came at this time.
Emma, the machine gunner who had her head out of the top turret, covered us by firing the machine gun towards the presumed location where the RPG had come from.
After all other squad members had disembarked, her upper body was exposed beyond the armor plate in the process of extracting herself from the vehicle exterior.
If she had gone down into the vehicle interior after pulling herself out of the turret, then opened the door and disembarked, instead of jumping down right away, could she have survived?
I can’t be certain she would have survived without any injuries, but at least she wouldn’t have died by taking a direct hit from a sniper’s bullet to her side, spraying ribs and flesh in all directions.
The sight of her sprawled ungracefully on the ground is still vivid.
Of all things, she fell with her head turned towards me.
Of all things, she died without even closing her eyes.
Those eyes that met mine still flicker before my eyes.
Empty eyes with life slowly draining away.
Dilated pupils.
Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.
From then on, a terrible psychological warfare against snipers continued.
A situation where we couldn’t carelessly leave the vicinity of the Humvees to move to nearby buildings.
After seeing another squad that was moving with us get completely wiped out when they rushed towards an alley at their squad leader’s command, we could only hide diligently behind the Humvees.
Because this street was full of snipers.
There were at least 10 snipers positioned in the bustling area.
The exact number of snipers that our allied marksmen eliminated at the risk of their lives was 10.
They were dealing with enemies until yesterday evening, then were brutally murdered by other snipers.
Those trash.
If you’re going to kill, do it quickly.
Our marksmen came out to the street to locate the snipers’ positions, taking advantage of the darkening surroundings.
The enemy snipers shot our marksmen’s legs to prevent them from moving, then shot their arms to prevent them from shooting, and left them abandoned on the roadside.
All squad members who went along to escort the marksmen suffered the same fate.
Occasionally, some would fall after being shot in the torso, but most were shot in the legs.
Their intention to additionally kill allied forces coming to rescue the wounded was obvious.
In the end, we had no choice but to ignore the wounded soldiers begging for help.
The reality of having to deliberately ignore the groans and desperate cries of injured soldiers was too horrific.
Overwhelmed by the insane situation unfolding around me, I couldn’t do anything and just sat on the ground with my ears covered.
Rose stayed by my side and tried to comfort me.
After spending the night wide awake like that, morning came.
The snipers were still targeting us, and the mental stress of our allies was beyond the limit.
As this tiresome standoff continued, at noon today.
Our squad leader was sniped.
At first, I thought she had carelessly exposed her head through the gaps in the wreckage and died.
And that thought was immediately disproven when our squad member Karin’s jaw was shattered by a bullet.
She was perfectly covered, and above all, the characteristic sharp sound of a silencer was heard from behind us.
It didn’t take long to realize that the snipers had caught us from behind.
Now we were rats in a trap, and it was obvious we would die uselessly if we just stayed in place.
After that, it was chaos itself.
We were not specially trained special forces.
We were a ragtag international legion who enlisted out of heroism, curiosity, or honor.
We just received the overflowing equipment because so many of Solomon’s regular troops died in the early stages of the war.
Our actual combat ability was significantly lower than the regular army.
Add to that the psychological pressure of possibly dying at any moment.
The squad members went crazy and ran out in all directions, becoming beehives by the snipers who were quietly waiting.
Of course, there were many who had served as soldiers before.
They showed relatively calm and composed behavior while taking cover behind the Humvees.
Of course, after confirming that snipers had caught us from behind, they rushed out into the streets like civilian-origin soldiers and were brutally killed.
The snipers were surrounding us from all directions.
I guess they held us in place and waited to check if additional forces were following behind us.
After a day passed with no particular movement, they must have decided to completely surround us and annihilate us.
Why didn’t we request support by radio?
That’s because the radio was dead.
Even when we tried to use the radio, all we heard was static noise.
It was clear the enemy was jamming the signals.
Even when we changed frequencies, the radio was still dead, and in the end, we couldn’t do anything but crouch in place.
Anyway, we were surrounded, and we had to run to survive.
So I ran with Rose and Casey, the last remaining squad member, to the nearest alley.
As if heaven really helped us, the snipers’ bullets targeted other soldiers instead of us.
We barely chose any building, broke down the door and entered, and it was an ordinary house.
When we quickly checked the interior and judged it safe, gunshots were no longer heard outside.
Unable to even check if other allies were alive, we hid deep inside the building.
We clearly thought the snipers hadn’t seen us.
Because even after a long time, the enemies showed no reaction.
So we were trapped in this house for several additional hours.
We had to endure the burning thirst as the water in our canteens ran out, and just as we were all about to die of thirst, Casey discovered a passage leading to the neighboring building.
Thinking there might be water on the other side, we started passing through the corridor.
And of course, not long after, blood spurted from Casey’s neck.
The gunshot sound rang out only a little after she collapsed.
We immediately lowered our posture and took cover, but Rose’s reaction was a bit late.
A bullet ricocheted off her helmet, and she fainted right there.
It was probably a concussion.

The damn walls of this building were so weak that large holes were easily punctured by bullets.
Bullets frequently flew towards where Rose and I were, and I put my arm under her armpit and crawled on my back to escape that hell.
However, Rose still hadn’t regained consciousness, and I eventually had no choice but to drag her and hole up in this small room.
Quite some time had passed, so it seemed okay to move now.
If we kept dragging this out, it would be disadvantageous for us.
“Rose, wake up.”
“Ugh…”
“Rose, let’s move. It’s dangerous to stay here any longer.”
“Urgh… Blegh…”
I tried to wake her up by shaking her shoulder, but she kept dry heaving as if she felt nauseous.
It really seems to be a concussion.
I sighed resignedly, put down my gear, and turned my back to her.
“Rose, then get on my back. I’ll carry you…”
Bang-!
“…Huh?”
The room door opened.
I didn’t even hear anyone approaching.
The door I thought I had locked was shattered and opened.
Me, sitting there stupidly.
Rose, who hadn’t regained consciousness.
A gun muzzle pointed at us.
“Aaaaargh!!!!”
My body reacted before I could think.
Instinctively, my body lunged forward and rammed into the enemy’s abdomen.
Crash-!
“Kugh…!”
“Oof!”
A groan involuntarily escapes at the impact transmitted as my body strongly collided with the floor, but I had to get up.
Because the enemy was still in front of me.
Gritting my teeth at the dull pain felt in my arms and torso, I raised my upper body.
But the enemy’s movement was faster than mine.
Gwak-
“Kuhek…”
The enemy’s rough hand chokes my neck.
I struggle because I can’t breathe, but there was not a hint of hesitation in her eyes looking at my face.
“Kehuk… Khek… Sto-op…”
My eyes roll back.
My vision darkens, and my whole body twists randomly.
No.
If I lose consciousness.
I don’t want to die.
I don’t want to die.
“Nooooooo!!!!”
In an instant, my vision turns red.
My hand reaches for the enemy in front of me.
I strike her throat with my hand and then stamp on her abdomen with my knee.
While the enemy pauses, inhaling sharply, I wrap my legs around her torso and knock down the arm supporting her upper body.
I raise my body and straddle the enemy’s abdomen, then strike her face with my fist.
Puk-
Puk-
“Aaaaaaaargh!!!!!!”
Rose died because of you.
Because of you.
You choked my neck.
So Rose got up to try to save me.
You pushed Rose down the stairs.
You, you killed Rose.
“You killed her!!!!”
I scream at her face.
“Haa… Haa…”
My heart races wildly, and cold sweat flows all over my body.
While I try to calm my rough breathing, the enemy in front of me silently looks at me.
White hair.
Red eyes.
A face covered in nosebleed.
Lips split and bleeding.
A flushed face.
Irregular, excited breaths.
“…Huh?”
That can’t be.
It was clearly that enemy soldier.
It was clearly that bastard who pushed Rose down the stairs.
Why.
“…Iris?”
“Haa… Huu… Le-Leader…”
I look around.
A dark semi-basement room.
On the bed.
Iris lying beneath me.
“Aah…”
I see.
I’m broken.
I was completely broken.
My body sways unsteadily.
I feel like I might faint like this.
If this were a dream.
If only this were a dream.
“Ugh…”
I raised my arm to grab my throbbing head.
However, that action was immediately stopped by Iris grabbing my wrist.
“Hnn… Leader…”
“…?”
Her face, somehow looking desperate for something.
Iris spoke with a trembling voice.
“More… Hit me more…”
