Chapter 15: Chapter 14: Escape
The echo of metal clanging and the hum of fluorescent lights filled the air as Henry knelt under a sleek chassis, his hands oily with grease. The rhythmic sounds of tools clattered against concrete, blending into a medley of mechanical precision. He'd been lost in thought, crafting his latest invention, when his phone buzzed against the workbench.
With a grunt, he reached for it, glancing at the caller ID. "Daniel," it read. He hesitated, then swiped to answer, puzzled but intrigued.
"Henry!" Daniel's voice crackled through the speaker, urgent and strained.
Henry jerked upright, nearly losing his balance as he cut a sharp look at the phone. "Daniel? Is that really you? I thought you were—"
"Yeah, it's me!" Daniel interjected, a quiver of relief in his tone. "Listen, I need your help. It's about Eva."
As he dropped his wrench, the metallic thud resounded around the garage, sharply breaking the silence. "Eva? What's going on?"
Daniel took a deep breath, his voice low but brimming with tension as he continued, "She's in the woods. and the military's are heading that way, we need to move before they get there. She's in big trouble, Henry."
The mention of Eva sent a jolt of adrenaline through Henry. "How do you know she's in danger?"
"It doesn't matter right now. We just have to go. Can you meet me? It's dark, and the moon's out. We don't have much time."
Henry ran a hand through his hair, glancing at the cluttered workbench and the glistening car parts scattered around. "Yeah, of course! Where should we meet?"
"Behind the old mill, near the edge of the woods. I'll explain everything when you get there."
"On my way," Henry said, determination lacing his voice. He glanced back at his tools one last time, then grabbed a duffel bag filled with his latest prototypes—a mix of gadgets meant for survival and protection. "

The night was alive with chaos as the city, once a vibrant hub of life, now lay shrouded in darkness and fear. Broken streetlights flickered erratically, casting sinister shadows over overturned cars and debris littering the asphalt. The air was thick with the acrid scent of smoke and something far worse—fear, raw and palpable. A deepening dread gripped the hearts of those who remained, for they were witnesses to an unprecedented nightmare unfolding before them.
As the first shrieks pierced the cold night air, Chloe pressed her back against the rough wall of a building, her breath ragged and panicked. She had just stepped out for a late-night run to the store when the chaos erupted. A group of creatures—twisted, grotesque versions of once-human beings—spilled out from the alleyways, their jaws torn and vacant eyes filled with an insatiable hunger. She gasped, recoiling at the sight of a man being dragged to the ground, blood pooling around him as the creatures feasted. Instinct took over; she had to find safety before these monsters turned their attention to her.
Around her, the city was a symphony of panic. Sirens wailed in the distance, but their presence did little to comfort the populace. People surged in every direction, seeking refuge in shops or random alleyways, their faces painted with a mix of terror and confusion. An overturned car blocked the street ahead, its windows shattered, while nearby a woman screamed, clutching a small child close as they both trembled with fear.
Just then, the thunder of helicopter blades sliced through the cacophony. Chloe looked up to see military helicopters swooping down from the sky, their searchlights cutting through the darkness. A chill ran down her spine as one of the choppers hovered, its guns opening fire on a cluster of creatures that clawed at a group of civilians trying to escape. Bursts of gunfire erupted, illuminating the night with flashes of light that revealed a scene of horror.
"Get inside!" A voice shouted from a loudspeaker, cutting through the noise of the battle. "Get to safety now! The military is here to help!"
Chloe tore her gaze away from the chaos and darted toward a nearby storefront that was still standing. The glass doors had been shattered, but she squeezed through the jagged opening, the sound of breaking glass echoing in her ears. Inside, the dim light of emergency exit signs flickered, casting eerie red shadows across the floor cluttered with debris.
She rushed into the back of the store, where a small group of people had gathered—two teenagers clutching one another and an older man who looked as though he'd seen far too much already. Their eyes widened in unison as Chloe entered, and she quickly waved her hands, breathless and panicked.
"We have to stay quiet!" she urged, her voice barely above a whisper. "They're out there."
The older man nodded, his face pale but determined. "We have to find another way out. This place won't hold for long." He pointed to a back door, its frame slightly ajar, as if inviting them into the unknown.
"Let's go," one of the teenagers, a girl with tangled hair and tear-streaked cheeks, said. "We can't stay here. They'll find us!"
Cautiously, they moved toward the back door. Chloe could hear the distant sounds of gunfire and screams mingling with the whir of helicopter blades, each noise sending shivers down her spine. As they reached the door, the man peered out, scanning the alley beyond.
"It looks clear… for now," he declared, pushing the door open just enough to slip through. The group followed, stepping into the cold night air, where the stench of smoke mingled with fear and despair.
They found themselves in a narrow alleyway, brick walls closing in on either side. Chloe could see the flicker of flames in the distance—a shop that had already succumbed to the chaos. The man led the way, glancing back to ensure everyone was still with him.
"I heard there's a shelter a few blocks from here," he said, his voice steady despite the tremors in his hands. "If we can get to it, we might be safe."
But then, from further down the alley, a low growl erupted,
