Warlock of Oceans: My Poseidon System

Chapter 424: Third Floor: The Haunted Forest of Winter Deers (20)

The battle raged on, each passing second a trial of endurance and skill. The thickly packed Winter Deers swarmed around them, never relenting, with the four looming Eldritch Deers pulsing with malevolent energy. Every swing, strike, and dodge demanded their full concentration, each of them operating at the edge of their limits as they fought to break through the waves of illusions and physical assaults. Cyrus swept his sword in a wide arc, cleaving through three of the Winter Deers in one powerful swing. Before he could regain his stance, two more lunged at him from either side. He adjusted his grip, letting his sword drop low, and pivoted with explosive force, bringing his knee into the jaw of one of the Deers and then following through with an upward thrust that impaled the other, flicking it off his blade with a quick twist. The illusions hit him like waves, his vision clouding as the forest seemed to warp, twisting into surreal, dizzying shapes. Cyrus fought back with a surge of aether that radiated outward, breaking the illusion with a shattering sound as he steadied himself, breath ragged. To his right, Athena conjured a spiraling shield of fire that encased her like a barrier. It spun around her, flames leaping outwards in sharp tendrils that kept the advancing Deers at bay. Each step forward, however, was met with another illusory assault—phantom claws, biting winds, and shifting shadows pressing against her mind. Her vision swam, but she focused, anchoring herself with a burst of ice beneath her feet, grounding her mentally and physically as she refocused her energy. She extended her arms, and a line of crystalline ice shot out from her fingers, lancing through several Winter Deers in a jagged line. She spun, driving her elbow into the snout of another Deer, following it up with a kick that sent it stumbling back into the others. On the other side, Sylus was a blur of speed, his movements sharp and calculated, each strike delivered with precision and lethal intent. His eyes locked onto one of the larger Eldritch Deers, the one at his left, and he sprinted toward it with relentless focus. He dodged low as two smaller Deers lunged, their antlers grazing the air above him, and he retaliated with a brutal downward slash that severed the legs of one, while simultaneously hurling a concentrated pulse of aether toward the other. The blast destabilized it, and he used the opportunity to jump on its back, using it as leverage to launch himself toward the towering Eldritch Deer. He slashed at one of its massive antlers, severing a section that fell heavily to the ground. A ripple went through the Winter Deers, their movements faltering as the Eldritch creature let out a guttural sound, reeling from the loss of its antler. Seeing the impact, Cyrus capitalized on the opportunity, his voice carrying above the chaos, "The antlers! They're controlling the illusions!" He unleashed another wave of aether, this one larger and more concentrated, driving back a mass of Deers as he and Athena redirected their focus to the massive Eldritch Deer that still wielded influence over the swarm. Athena took his cue, ice forming at her fingertips, morphing into jagged, razor-sharp spikes. She launched them with deadly precision toward one of the Eldritch Deers, the shards embedding themselves in its neck and torso, cracking the eerie skin with a faint shattering sound. The creature stumbled, the eyes on its antlers flickering erratically as if struggling to keep hold of its illusory power. She advanced, striking with brutal efficiency, her hands a blur as she conjured a storm of ice, sending the smaller Winter Deers sprawling as she closed in on the weakened Eldritch Deer. Despite their progress, the onslaught from the other Deers and illusions persisted. Sylus could feel the weight of the mental barrage bearing down, his thoughts clouding as phantom images clawed at his mind. He forced a deep breath, channeling a steady pulse of aether around his head to dissipate the worst of the illusions. He re-centered himself, then dashed forward, rolling beneath the sweeping antlers of one of the Eldritch Deers as it tried to gore him. He planted his hands on the ground, using the momentum to swing his body in a fierce upward kick that connected with the creature's face. It reared back, giving him the perfect angle to thrust his sword into the base of one of its antlers. With a violent twist, he shattered the appendage, causing the creature to release a distorted, haunting bellow. The shattered antler sent ripples through the illusory field, the dense fog in their minds lifting for a precious few seconds. But the remaining Eldritch Deers wasted no time, their antlers pulsing in unison as they intensified the assault, projecting waves of powerful illusions that swept over the trio. The ground seemed to melt beneath their feet, branches warped into jagged claws, and the sky darkened until it was nearly pitch-black. Cyrus gritted his teeth, feeling the crushing weight of the illusion attempting to smother him. He thrust his hand outward, sending a surge of aether through his sword that radiated in a wide arc, slicing through the phantom landscape and briefly illuminating the battlefield. He glimpsed Athena, her eyes narrow as she punched forward, her fist encased in an icy gauntlet that shattered through the illusionary images as she held her ground against the swarm. Sylus was now face-to-face with another Eldritch Deer, its multiple eyes glistening with unnatural intelligence as it loomed over him. It feinted with a sweep of its massive antlers, but Sylus anticipated the movement, slipping to the side and driving his blade into the base of its neck. He felt the satisfying crack as the creature lurched, its control wavering momentarily. Without missing a beat, he withdrew his sword, ducking under the next swipe as he brought his heel down hard against its front leg, snapping bone as it toppled forward. He drove his sword downward, ending it with a forceful thrust to the skull. The two remaining Eldritch Deers, sensing the weakening of their allies, increased the ferocity of their assault. Their antlers pulsed in a strobe-like pattern, filling the air with a chaotic cacophony of overlapping illusions. The trio staggered, each of them feeling the illusions creep deeper, muddling their senses and distorting their perception. Every lunge felt heavier, each strike less precise as if they were wading through thick mud. But they held firm, relying on aether-fueled pulses to keep the illusions at bay. Cyrus exchanged a glance with Athena and Sylus, a flicker of understanding passing between them as they adjusted their tactics. They positioned themselves in a tight triangle, back-to-back, creating a unified field of aether around them. By pooling their energy, they fortified their minds, warding off the worst of the illusions as they coordinated their attacks. With each controlled blast of aether, they chipped away at the illusions, forcing the Eldritch Deers to reveal themselves more fully. Athena took point, summoning a massive shard of ice above her head and hurling it with brutal precision toward the closest Eldritch Deer. The ice tore through its flank, causing it to falter, its grip over the illusions loosening as it staggered back. Sylus seized the moment, dashing forward with a powerful thrust that pierced through its chest, his blade crackling with energy as he withdrew it with a sharp twist. But even as the Eldritch Deer fell, the final creature let out a chilling bellow, its antlers aglow as it summoned every remaining Winter Deer to charge in unison. The ground shook as the creatures surged forward, the sheer mass of bodies pressing against the trio with overwhelming force. Cyrus, Athena, and Sylus braced themselves, their muscles screaming with the strain as they fought to hold the line. Cyrus felt his vision blur, the exhaustion setting in, but he forced himself to focus, releasing one final, powerful wave of aether that carved a path through the horde. Athena followed suit, her ice magic coalescing into a storm that engulfed the creatures in a barrage of freezing winds and sharp shards, creating a momentary gap in the onslaught. Sylus took the opportunity to surge forward, targeting the last remaining Eldritch Deer, his blade raised as he prepared for the final strike. The fight was far from over, yet they pressed on, their resilience and skill keeping them on the knife's edge of survival. The illusionary assaults, relentless swarms, and the looming presence of the last Eldritch Deer bore down on them, pushing each of them to the breaking point. But with every strike, every blast of aether, they held their ground, refusing to surrender as the battle waged on. The forest battlefield opened up as the endless wave of Winter Deers suddenly thinned, their numbers dwindling as if scattered by an invisible wind. The relentless wall of bodies melted away, leaving Cyrus, Athena, and Sylus breathing hard, finally able to glimpse the empty space around them. It was only a brief respite, as the four Eldritch Deers' eyes snapped onto them, each towering creature lowering its monstrous antlers bristling with jagged, watchful eyes. In unison, they let out guttural roars that echoed through the trees, shaking the ground as they charged forward, their massive limbs tearing through the earth with a thunderous force.
