Chapter 299: Chapter 299: They’re Not Dead!
After talking with the team, He Kui returned to his Strike and officially set off. The weather over South America was as bright and sunny as ever, and the squad headed for Manaus had grown larger since their last mission.
Numerous transport planes carried non-flying mobile suits, while He Kui, Elina, and other fighter jets kept a watchful eye from the outer perimeter. The group moved like a migrating flock of birds, gliding silently above the clouds in a sweeping formation.
"According to Ms. A, they may have deployed mobile suits equipped with Mirage Colloid, correct?" Edward said from inside one of the transport planes.
"Yes," He Kui replied, "but there won't be many of them."
With their high cost and specialized design, the Blitz was mainly a special operations suit; producing more of them would be inefficient compared to investing in more Strike or other types.
"I see…" Edward nodded thoughtfully. "If I may ask, how did Ms. A detect them?"
"My radar system has been upgraded, both hardware and software. I'll need to be in Manaus to perform a full calibration."
"Understood." Seeing it was a hardware matter, Edward didn't press further. "In that case, Ms. A, we'll rely on you for vigilance."
"No problem." He Kui was quite looking forward to this mission. With the South American president's bold disposition, he suspected they'd be interested in upgrading radars, which would bring in quite a bit of profit.
While He Kui mused over the logistics of transferring his earnings, a Blitz-style green mobile suit waited quietly in the jungle, its Mirage Colloid system powered down to remain hidden.
"They're heading toward Manaus?" muttered Kozar, an elite from the Phantom Pain division. "Did they have some means of detection we're not aware of?"
Kozar considered the possibilities, pressing his temples in thought. "Eh, let those higher-ups worry about it." He didn't dare approach the Strike piloted by A, so he silently slipped away from the jungle.
Switching his Strike into AI autopilot mode, He Kui shifted his attention back to Orb. In the cockpit of his mobile suit on the deserted island, he woke up, cautious as ever. He activated the radar before opening the cockpit door, scanning the area for any signs of people or mobile suits. Finding nothing, he stepped out into the peaceful landscape of sea and sky.
It was probably school time for the teenagers in the Orb area. However, with his current appearance, setting foot on the main island would undoubtedly draw attention. After all, the cloaked figure with a mysterious air had become a bit infamous here.
How to go about it? He Kui pondered, deciding it was best to use his "birds" for reconnaissance. He didn't plan to enter the main island but instead settled on a less conspicuous position below a cliff by the sprawling academy campus. Concealed by some hidden rocks, he released his bird-like reconnaissance drones.
Under manual control, he steered the bird through the campus, assuming Kira would likely be in the robotics engineering program. Within minutes, He Kui reached the building indicated on the map, scanning the bustling student body for signs of a green mechanical bird.
He was disappointed. There were a number of electronic gadgets among the students, but none matching Kira's green bird.
"Is he not studying here after all?" He Kui thought. But if Kira wasn't here, where could he be? Surely he hadn't joined Morgenroete?
Disappointed, He Kui decided to shift his search to Fllay. If she was still here, it might provide some leads. Adjusting his drone's focus, he soon spotted a striking figure with fiery red hair walking alongside a group of girls on the nearby campus. The girl's hair glowed like fire under the morning sun—if that was Fllay, identifying her would be simple.
Perching his drone on a tree branch nearby, He Kui zoomed in on the conversation.
"Fllay, are you sure you don't want to go out with us tonight?" one of the girls asked, holding Fllay's pale hands.
"No," Fllay replied, her expression gloomy as she shook her head. "Even though Sai and the others…they…"
"They're not dead!" Fllay retorted sharply, her face darkening at her friend's suggestion.
Watching this, He Kui smirked, getting a good idea of the situation.
It made sense for Fllay to still be here, away from the Archangel's turmoil, even if she survived. As for how she survived, there were countless possibilities—she may have used her status to escape early via a small escape pod.
However, Sai and the others were unlikely to be dead. He Kui hadn't kept track of the Archangel's whereabouts after Alaska, but he knew it hadn't crashed. They'd likely been captured by the Eurasian Federation—or, considering the history with Artemis' Umbrella, it was possible they were heading to Morgenroete in Orb.
With that confirmation, he retrieved the drone, hearing Sullei's impatient voice over his communicator.
"He Kui! Lunch is ready!" Her voice was light but laced with annoyance.
"On my way," he replied.
The Morgenroete headquarters would be off-limits for now. If he wanted to disrupt the Archangel's operations at Heliopolis, he needed more information. For now, this initial scouting would have to suffice.
