Chapter 7: Chapter 7: Furnace Apprentice
Lynn lay on the ground for over ten minutes before he finally caught his breath and managed to get up.
Exhausted, he supported himself with his hands, his body trembling slightly, but he had regained some strength and began to assess the current situation.
He knew that the only reason he had survived was because he had given it his all.
To ensure the effectiveness of Daze, he had drained all his mental power in one go, and the subsequent attacks had pushed him to his limits.
The overuse of his mental power left his brain feeling as if it had been hammered, waves of sharp pain pulsing through his head.
Lynn touched his forehead, closed his eyes, and took a moment to recover. Aside from the intense headache, he confirmed that his body hadn't sustained any serious injuries.
Although he had been thrown off by the blond-haired youth's desperate counterattack, he had luckily rolled a few times, avoiding the fatal blow. The only damage was to his hands.
While gripping the bone dagger and attacking frantically, he had exerted too much force, accidentally cutting his palms on the sharp edges of the bone. The wounds weren't deep, but the burning pain served as a reminder of the life-and-death struggle he had just endured.
Lynn looked down at his blood-stained hands, a bitter smile forming on his lips as he muttered:
"Even with careful planning… it was still such a close call…"
At this moment, he felt both the relief of having survived and a deep sense of exhaustion.
Despite having a detailed plan, he couldn't escape the disheveled outcome.
However, no matter how perilous the process had been, he had ultimately survived.
This was his first time killing someone, and Lynn had expected to feel intense discomfort and guilt. Yet, he was surprisingly calm.
Perhaps it was because this had been a life-or-death battle, or perhaps the adrenaline still coursing through his veins had numbed his nerves. He felt no discomfort, only a sense of calm and release.
"Those who kill shall be killed… I've avenged those he killed."
Lynn whispered, glancing at the blond-haired youth's corpse with cold eyes before turning away, not sparing it another look.
After sitting and resting for a while longer, Lynn confirmed that he was well enough to walk. He picked up his Earth Rhinoceros Beast and, with slightly unsteady steps, began making his way toward the designated meeting point.
Lynn hadn't forgotten that this was, after all, a trial.
He glanced at the Earth Rhinoceros Beast beside him and understood:
The reason the blond-haired youth had always kept the Earth Rhinoceros Beast with him was clearly that they had to present their "prey" to the wizard upon completion.
Before long, Lynn finally reached the entrance of the beast pen.
In the distance, he saw three figures standing at the entrance. One of them was the scar-faced wizard, while the other two were strong, burly youths.
Lynn couldn't help but frown. These two were most likely the blond-haired youth's companions.
"Ross, why are you so late?"
One of the youths, with a high nose bridge, called out as he saw a figure approaching in the distance, his tone tinged with dissatisfaction.
But before he could finish speaking, his expression froze.
Because the person approaching from afar wasn't the familiar blond-haired Ross, but a stranger they had never seen before.
"If the Ross you're talking about is that blond guy, then he probably won't be coming."
Lynn dragged the Earth Rhinoceros Beast closer, his gaze sweeping over the two youths before settling on the scar-faced wizard.
He smiled faintly, his tone relaxed.
The two youths' pupils contracted slightly, their hearts stirring.
Who was this guy? How had he managed to kill Ross in the beast pen and come out alive with the Earth Rhinoceros Beast?
However, before they could ask more questions, the scar-faced wizard spoke coldly:
"Hmm, you're indeed the last one. The three of you have passed the trial. Follow me."
With that, he turned and walked away without any hesitation.
Hearing this, Lynn finally felt a weight lift from his chest, though he maintained a calm expression and silently followed.
The other two youths, though wary of Lynn, exchanged a glance and followed closely behind.
The Furnace was vast, and divided into multiple areas. The beast pen was just one corner, a place specifically for capturing and raising magical beasts.
The living quarters for wizards and wizard apprentices, however, were located deeper within the Furnace, in its core area.
Lynn and the other two youths followed the scar-faced wizard along a winding path.
The scenery on either side gradually shifted from the desolate, beast-filled wilderness to more orderly areas, as if they had entered a different world.
The scar-faced wizard remained silent, his steps steady and quick, showing no interest in engaging with them.
Lynn and the other two youths also stayed quiet.
The three of them walked in silence, their footsteps echoing in the empty path.
Finally, they were led to a densely built area.
This was the living quarters of the Furnace. The sight was filled with towering buildings and wide plazas, and the people coming and going were quite diverse.
Lynn noticed that without exception, everyone wore long robes of a uniform style, finely tailored.
What was more striking was that whenever they passed by, almost everyone would stop, bow to the scar-faced wizard leading them, and step aside, their movements filled with respect and fear.
"This guy holds a high status…"
Lynn thought to himself, his understanding of the scar-faced wizard's identity deepening.
Amidst the bows and gazes, Lynn and the other two were brought to a multi-story building at the center of the living quarters.
The building was imposing, its exterior walls covered in intricate runes that faintly radiated a mysterious energy.
At the entrance was a reception desk, behind which sat a man flipping through documents.
The man wore a well-tailored wizard's robe and exuded an air of efficiency.
"Lord Drey, welcome back!"
The man immediately set down the documents in his hands and stood up to bow when he saw the scar-faced wizard. His gaze then swept over Lynn and the other two, a hint of surprise in his tone:
"Are these the last batch of newcomers this year? Only three?"
"Hmm."
The scar-faced wizard addressed as Drey, nodded slightly, his tone indifferent. "They're your responsibility now, Colin. Lastly, give my regards to your teacher."
With that, he turned and left without another word, his cold figure quickly disappearing.
"Yes, sir."
The man named Colin nodded slightly, watching Drey leave before turning his attention back to Lynn and the other two.
He examined them for a moment, a polite smile appearing on his face.
"You three, do you have any preferences for where you'd like to go?"
Colin's tone was gentle.
Lynn was momentarily stunned, at a loss for words.
He knew almost nothing about the inner workings of the Furnace, so he naturally had no idea where to go.
Before he could speak, the two youths behind him eagerly answered.
"Lord Colin, I'd like to join the Potions Department."
"Lord Colin, I wish to join the Alchemy Department."
Colin nodded slightly and pointed to a wall not far away, where a detailed map of the Furnace's various areas was hung.
"Good. The map is over there. Go and report to your chosen departments."
Colin waved his hand, then turned his gaze to Lynn, who still looked utterly lost. With a hint of surprise, he said:
"To think that after all these years here, I'd see a complete newcomer enter…"
