Chapter 118 Flying Dragon and the Cannon
The speaker did not appear young, with grizzled beard and hair, dressed in a set of drab armor adorned with the family crest on the chest.
At first glance, the animal depicted in the crest bore some resemblance to the rabbit of the Arias family but also looked a bit like a mouse.
"Guinea pig," Ivan clarified for the Lady, resolving the question in her mind, "That is the Dormond family crest. The man above on the city walls is the Dormond family's Family Head, Old Oak Tree Vierstein."
"How old is he?" Irene asked curiously.
"If I'm not mistaken, he'll be two hundred and sixty-nine next month, just ten years younger than Clovis."
"And he's still able to lead troops into battle?" Miss Rabbit couldn't help but sweat for him as she saw Vierstein gasp for air after saying only a few words, giving the impression that he could drop dead at any moment.
"He's not as frail as he appears," Ivan said. "His body is well-maintained, his arms are strong, and he possesses excellent swordsmanship. He just pretends to be on his last breath to lull his opponents into complacency. Those unfamiliar with him are easily deceived."
"Previously, Solomon forced the nobles who had capitulated to him to duel, and Vierstein swiftly killed four opportunists looking to take advantage of him in one go," Ivan continued.
"Quite the cunning fellow, then."
The former intelligence chief nodded, "But because of that, we might be able to easily take Rock Snow City. Clovis should not have entrusted him with the city's defense."
As the Lady and Ivan were conversing in hushed tones, Kamzi continued to shout towards the city walls.
"We are here to seek Lord Clovis, to ask him to hand over Rock Snow City."
"How can you say such shameless things? Everyone in the western territory knows that Rock Snow City belongs to the Figrola family.
"And you are vassals of the Figrola family. Yet now you lead a large army here to Rock Snow City, have you forgotten the oaths you once swore?" Old Oak Tree Vierstein declared righteously.
"Of course, we haven't forgotten our oaths. It was the Figrola family who first abandoned us, abandoned the western territory. Clovis has already agreed to Solomon's demands, aiding those Wing Tribe members and their allies in invading the western territory, allowing them to pillage and kill on our lands.
"Moreover, he agreed to exchange the western territory for the Figrola family's original lands in the Northern Territory. Many nobles were present at the time and can bear witness.
"So now this land no longer belongs to the Figrola family. We have nominated the Dragon Slayer Hero, the daughter of Ruse with blood-red eyes, the Arias family's Family Head Irene, to become the new ruler of the western territory.
"She has promised to lead us in continuing the fight against those invaders and reclaim all the lands of the western territory.
"Therefore, from this day forth, Rock Snow City belongs to the Arias family, and we have come here to take possession of this city," Kamzi said, pausing briefly.
"Of course, Sir Irelia is not one to ignore past relationships. Even if Lord Clovis chooses to side with our enemies, as long as he is willing to surrender Rock Snow City, Sir Irelia will still leave a way out for him and all members of the Figrola family, allowing them to leave the western territory," Kamzi added.
Vierstein's eyes darted around.
"You say Lord Clovis has already surrendered Rock Snow City and exchanged the western territory for the original family lands in the Northern Territory. However, I must remind you, according to the laws of the Empire, the Northern Territory belongs to the Monteverde family, and Solomon has no right to give it to anyone. Therefore... the deal you mentioned actually doesn't count," Vierstein said.
Kamzi was stupefied upon hearing this, obviously not expecting the man atop the city walls to be brazen enough to invoke the laws of the Empire when they had clearly already sided with those of the Wing Tribe.
For a moment, he found himself at a loss for words.
Fortunately, at that moment, another person arrived beneath the city and said with a smile, "You make sense, but for such a significant matter, we'd better have Lord Clovis come out and clarify things.
"If the Figrola family still wishes to stay in the Western Territory, they can start by handing over the people of the Wing Tribe and their allies in the city, to show their stance."
The speaker was Ivan, and his words won the approval of most people present.
However, on the city wall, Vierstein was cursively inside, aware of Ivan's intention to sow discord between Lord Clovis and himself.
Even with that realization, he found no good solution. Considering the fighting capability shown by the Resistance Army before, Rock Snow City would likely struggle to hold.
Whether it was Lord Clovis or Vierstein, at best they could only hold out for a few more days, and then pin their hopes on Solomon and his Wing Tribe army coming to the rescue from Lake City.
If everyone had no way out, it would be one thing, then they could just hold out together until the end, but now Ivan had intentionally left a glimmer of hope for Lord Clovis and the Figrola family.
If the situation turned dire, Lord Clovis might really turn back and join up with the lords outside the city. At that time, Vierstein and his three thousand men would be left with no way out.
Vierstein now regretted that he shouldn't have impulsively discussed the ownership of Rock Snow City with those people below the city before.
Seeing that there was no further response from atop the city walls, Kamzi left a message, demanding Clovis to hand over the people within half a day, otherwise, the Resistance Army would begin their siege.
After which, he returned, having successfully completed his mission along with Ivan.
Yet, by dusk, there was still no movement within Rock Snow City.
The Lady glanced at her Disney Watch, "Time's almost up. It seems that Lord Clovis has made his choice."
Kamzi, Fabrice, Tog, and other lords were now all eager to seek battle with the young girl.
However, the Lady only ordered them to surround Rock Snow City and intentionally left a road open toward Lake City.
Then the Lady first commanded the White Dragon to launch an attack on Rock Snow City, setting fire above the city wall, barracks, the armory, and the Figrola family's castle.
The nobles of the Bratis Continent had suffered greatly from the giant dragons in recent times, having no effective means against these tough-skinned creatures that could breathe fire and fly.
But now, they finally had dragons of their own, and it was time for their enemies to feel the headache.
Both the men under the Old Oak Tree and the guards of the Figrola family were clearly no match for the giant dragons. Coupled with the recent defeat of the army, the morale within the city was already low. With the additional burning, some of the militia and forcibly conscripted men to defend the city began to collapse from within.
The Lady then brought out the Italian Cannons as well.
In truth, against solid stone fortresses such as Rock Snow City, the damage wrought by the small cannons produced by the Double Rest Sect was quite minimal, but the noise from those dozens of cannons was overwhelming.
Moreover, among those in the city were many survivors from the previous battle's defeated soldiers, who had a vivid memory of the terrifying cannons that fired iron projectiles. With their exaggerated descriptions, panic quickly spread among the crowd.
