Chapter 96: CH: 96 Vengeance
[Chapter: 96 Vengeance]
Several people were walking on a bridge.
Jill looked at the cameras on the bridge and said in a dissatisfied tone, "Is this some kind of game to him, where he's watching everything we do through these cameras?"
"We're already in a game," William said with a smile. "The game field is where we are, the story is the outbreak, and Alice and the rest have been designated as the game characters."
"So, who is the player?" Alice glanced at William.
William smiled. "There are many players, such as those from the Umbrella Corporation, since they're the ones enjoying this game. But the biggest player of them all would be me."
"It makes sense, William. It seems like you usually treat this hunting as a game," Alice said with a light smile.
William smiled and said, "That is indeed true. Wow, Alice, you saw right through me. Man, I'm really a simple guy, just like an open book."
"Man, I haven't watched many dramas, but you could really become an actor with your skills," Jill said sarcastically.
Alice's face changed as she looked down at the bridge. "There's something over there."
"What? Where?" Jill looked around but saw nothing.
"I don't see anything," Peyton said.
"That doesn't change the fact that there's something over there." Alice's gaze swept the area, searching, with a sense of crisis in her heart.
There was a glint in William's eyes as he said, "Let the game begin."
"Huh, I've had enough. Let's see if something is really there." Peyton yelled and took out his pistol as he walked forward.
Bang! Bang!
For a moment, bullets flew in random directions without aim, sparks lighting up the area. Then, Peyton's body fell to the ground, riddled with holes.
"Peyton!" Jill yelled and shot under the bridge.
The others finally saw who was firing—a tall humanoid monster, holding Gatling guns in its hands.
Alice, looking at the monster, shouted, "Run! Hurry and run away!"
William held Terry's hand. "Let's go."
Alice's face turned cold, and she jumped directly off the bridge, landing steadily on the ground. Most people who jumped from here were usually those committing suicide.
The others ran down the bridge and saw a pickup truck.
Inside the truck, Jill tried to rub the two leads together, hoping to start the engine. Her expression looked sad, naturally because Peyton was dead.
"Jill, I'm sorry about Peyton, but we can't let this hold us down. We must survive if we want to make sure his memory doesn't disappear."
Jill nodded slightly. "Thank you, I know." For the first time, hearing what William said wasn't as annoying to her.
"No one knows how or when they'll die, but I promise you one thing—if we're going to die, I'll be in front of you and be the first one to go," William said lightly.
"William, don't say such a thing. We won't die," Terry said.
"Why choose to die before us?" Jill asked, curious.
"Because then I don't have to see you lovely ladies die," William said with a sigh.
Jill's body twitched slightly. "We haven't known each other for long."
"It has nothing to do with the time; it's how you spend it," William said, looking into Jill's eyes while delivering these cringe-worthy lines.
Jill turned her face aside. "I don't know," she muttered, and then suddenly, sparks popped up, and the truck's engine finally started.
Jill breathed a sigh of relief. "We can go now."
"Roar!"
A zombie rushed towards Jill in the driver's seat.
Jill's face changed as she pushed the zombie away. It turned out that the zombie was Peyton, and he had become one of them.
"Ahhh!" Jill yelled and kicked Peyton aside.
Peyton bellowed and continued to pounce. Jill took out her gun and aimed at Peyton's head. "I'm sorry."
"Let me do it," William said, shooting Peyton in the head.
Jill looked at Peyton's body. Sorrow flashed in her eyes, and she whispered, "Thank you," as she closed the door.
"This is the least we can do for him—to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone. I'm sure he would've wanted that," William said lightly.
Jill didn't speak but drove the truck silently toward their destination.
"William, what are we going to do?" Terry asked, her eyes showing confusion.
"Why? Don't you have a plan for the future?"
"I really don't know what to do. People have become like that... Will we become like that too?" Terry's eyes were filled with fear. She didn't want to become a zombie.
William patted Terry's shoulder. "It's okay. Don't think about it. Besides, you have me to protect you."
"Hmm." Terry nodded, suddenly feeling lucky to have met William.
Jill felt uncomfortable watching them. She didn't know why. She wasn't paying attention to the road when suddenly, Terry shouted, "Stop!"
A man with a hat ran over. "I'm not one of those things! Remember me? Look! I haven't been bitten anywhere. See?"
