You are my mission

Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Protocol and True Feelings

"Did you find anything?" Su Xiaoxi asked, taking the bags from him and forcing a casual tone.

Lin Yi hung up his coat, his movements slower than usual. "Someone's put a bounty on that photo and the person who took it. The price is high."

Su Xiaoxi's hands trembled slightly. "How high?"

"Enough to tempt half the city's desperados," Lin Yi said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I'll tighten security before the handover. Agent 002 arrives at 10 a.m. the day after tomorrow."

He didn't meet her eyes as he spoke. Su Xiaoxi bit her lip and suddenly pulled out the photo. "I found something. The label on the case shows it's from S&W Laboratories. They reported a batch of stolen drugs two months ago..."

Lin Yi took the photo, his brow furrowing. "This is critical. I'll brief 002."

"Can't you investigate it yourself?" Su Xiaoxi's voice rose despite herself. "Just because you're 'too invested'? What kind of reason is that?"

Lin Yi's expression sharpened instantly. "You eavesdropped on my call?"

"The door wasn't closed properly!" Su Xiaoxi glared back defiantly. "And I have the right to know who's protecting me and why they're replacing you!"

The air between them seemed to freeze. Finally, Lin Yi looked away, his voice low. "Professional agents shouldn't form personal relationships with protectees. It's protocol."

"So all these months together were just 'professional'?" Su Xiaoxi's voice quivered slightly. "The training, the lunches, the birthday surprise... all just part of the mission?"

Lin Yi's Adam's apple bobbed, but he didn't answer.

"I see." Su Xiaoxi turned toward the bedroom. "I'll go pack my things."

"Wait." Lin Yi stopped her. "This afternoon, I need to walk you through the surrounding safety routes. No matter who takes over, this knowledge will be useful."

Su Xiaoxi didn't turn back, just nodded and closed the door. Leaning against it, she let the tears fall. Why did it hurt so much? She'd known from the start he was just here on a mission...

At 3 p.m., they left the safe house, walking in tense silence. Lin Yi showed her nearby emergency exits, the local police station, and several safe points. The atmosphere between them was icy and professional, just like when they'd first met.

"The last route is through the park to the subway station," Lin Yi said, pointing ahead. "If you're being followed, use the crowd and surveillance cameras to lose them."
