Chapter 135 Playing Dead
The bait was quickly found.
It was a rat trying to gnaw on a corpse.
This was also one of the mutated creatures Lin Mo had learned about before coming here.
It bared its teeth and snarled at the sight of the people coming back to find their teammate's body, not frightened at all but looking like it was about to pounce at any moment, before it was shot through the head by a Hunter with a crossbow arrow.
Then another one leaped out from the bushes nearby.
But before it could pounce, it was swiftly chopped in half by Gao Feng with a swift blade.
By now, the surrounding sky had nearly darkened completely, and the group didn't dare to linger, quickly leaving the area after retrieving the equipment from their deceased comrade.
And the Mutant Rat that was chopped in half was thrown directly into a cage by Lin Mo.
He was about to throw in the remaining one as well when he noticed Liu Bing and others around him staring fixedly at the particularly plump Mutant Rat, occasionally swallowing salivary.
Lin Mo understood immediately.
These people hadn't eaten meat for a very long time.
And this sizable rat had clearly aroused their appetite.
After a moment of thought, he decisively threw the rat corpse to the people, then instructed them to lie in ambush outside, ready to provide backup.
Meanwhile, Lin Mo himself turned and entered the truck cab.
He then decisively pressed the transformer switch.
Click.
The moment he pressed it, a faint tingling sensation passed up through the mat underfoot, frightening him into quickly lifting his foot and tucking it up on the seat.
He had been careless.
He should have known to put the switch outside.
Regretting in his heart, Lin Mo realized that he couldn't touch the door now; he was temporarily trapped in the cab.
At the same time, the drab factory buildings outside were also fading away into the dark.
Until they blended completely with the night.
The rustling sounds resumed.
The sliced meat in the cage was like a beacon in the night, drawing countless moths to hurdle forward successively, quickly surrounding the truck.
Bang.
Another muffled sound.
Something rolled off the top of the truck.
Lin Mo watched the fleeting shadows pass by the window, a glint of tension flashing in his eyes.
The number of mutant zombies was much greater than he had imagined.
At least a dozen.
If any single one discovered him hiding inside the truck—
The consequences were grim to contemplate.
Their long, sharp claws could instantly pierce the glass before him.
But the opportunity hadn't arrived yet.
He had to maintain absolute silence.
Suddenly, a clear snap echoed from behind him on the cargo bed.
Then it seemed like something was rampaging on the truck.
The cage on the cargo bed clanged instantly.
But this strange noise lasted for only a few seconds before it abruptly stopped, and the quiet from before enveloped the outside once again.
The chance had come!
Lin Mo hit the ignition without hesitation!
With a roar, the truck sprang to life and sped across the yard!
Dazzling beams swept around.
Under the lights, several hunched zombies hid around like stray dogs, only to be sent flying by the truck that quickly turned its direction!
"Hahaha!"
"I did it!"
"Who'll look down on me, Lin Mo, now!"
In the pitch-black cab, Lin Mo was laughing hysterically.
A half-open iron gate soon appeared in his vision.
There was another crashing sound.
The roaring truck plowed straight through the gate.
Meanwhile, several shadows chased after it like hyenas.
"Quick, quick!"
"The captain's out!"
Upon seeing this, Liu Bing, who was on watch outside, immediately woke the dozing driver.
The modified off-road vehicle wrapped in iron wire and spikes charged towards the shadow behind the truck, quickly running over one of them and zooming away into the distance.
An hour later.
Near the base entrance.
Lin Mo, looking at the lights on the wall, couldn't suppress a grin curling up the corner of his mouth.
"Open up!"
"It's Lin Mo!"
"I need to see the Chairman!"
The two security guards stationed at the door had no reaction, remaining like statues in their place.
Soon after, a somewhat wary voice came from inside:
"Lin Mo?"
"Don't know him."
"It's already past eight o'clock."
"According to the regulations, no entry or exit is allowed, you guys should find a place to spend the night outside."
Lin Mo hadn't spoken yet when Liu Bing and the others behind him couldn't hold back any longer.
"Damn, don't you recognize our captain?"
"We're from the Hunter Squad!"
"Hurry up and open the door!"
However, instead of opening the door, the person inside sneered:
"The Hunter Squad?"
"What Hunter Squad?"
"How come I don't know of such a squad in the company?"
The people outside, hearing this, instantly grew even angrier, and were about to start cursing.
"Damn it!"
"We've barely—"
They hadn't even finished speaking before Lin Mo interrupted:
"Everybody, calm down."
"Have you all forgotten what your status is?"
Upon hearing this, they remembered that their squad had indeed only been established that day; it was normal for the person inside not to be aware.
That was all well and good in theory.
But for the sake of that mutant zombie in the vehicle, they had lost a total of seven people.
Now that they had finally returned, were they not even allowed into the safety zone?
Liu Bing was still somewhat unconvinced and wanted to argue a few points.
"Enough."
"Let me do the talking."
After Lin Mo had calmed him down, he immediately turned his head and shouted at the shadow on the wall:
"Brother!"
"I have no reason to lie to you!"
"The Hunter Squad was just established today, and it is managed by Director Xu!"
"We've just returned from a mission outside, with important information to report to the Chairman!"
"If you don't believe me, you can go and verify with Director Xu first!"
The person inside was initially dismissive, but as they listened, their expression began to change.
Damn, could they really be from the Combat Department?
But I certainly haven't heard of it...
After some hesitation, the individual nonetheless decided to report back to the base.
Time swiftly passed, another ten minutes gone by.
The huge metal door, several inches thick, slowly began to slide open.
The members of the Hunter Squad, who had been growing impatient, were instantly revitalized.
"Brothers, the door's open!"
"Hahaha!"
"Let's go in!"
The two vehicles drove into the safety zone, one after the other.
They promptly pulled over to the side of the road, waiting for further safety inspections.
The inspection team arrived shortly thereafter.
The man leading them had a tall and straight posture, and his movements exuded a sense of swift efficiency.
"Director Xu!"
After getting a clear look at the incoming figure, Lin Mo immediately greeted him.
Xu Lin's gaze swept quickly over him, then shifted to the iron cage on the vehicle.
A creature that looked like a wild dog lay quietly inside.
As the security personnel in charge of the inspection drew near, they suddenly saw a shadow ferociously pounce toward them.
Clang clang clang—
The iron cage began to shake violently.
The guards surrounding the truck instantly tensed up.
Four or five revolvers were drawn and pointed at the strange creature inside in unison.
"Stop!"
"Don't shoot, everyone!"
Xu Lin restrained the guards with one gesture, but even his gaze towards the iron cage contained a hint of surprise.
This thing can actually play dead?
