Chapter 34: TST [34]
'colorful torch-hair?'
A giant question mark formed in everyone's minds. They couldn't imagine what kind of hairstyle that was supposed to be… Would anyone in the real world actually wear such an abstract haircut?
Could it be that Morgan just made someone up to brush them off?
Once again, all eyes turned toward Morgan.
But she stayed calm, her voice trembling pitifully as she continued:
"Back then, I got injured in a Riding Duel mishap and stayed in the hospital for a long time. Everyone knows my grades aren't great, and now that I fell behind in my studies, I was really worried about the midterm exam."
"And at that moment, I ran into this big brother with a hairdo like a torch. After I told him about my worries, he lent me this card and even taught me how to use it, plus a lot of Duel knowledge."
…That was too far-fetched.
Even though Morgan was saying it seriously, everyone was thinking the same thing.
A powerful card is a Duelist's lifeblood. Who would just lend it out to a total stranger, especially a kid?
Mr. Grant also thought Morgan was feeding him nonsense… especially that cutesy voice she was using, it was driving him nuts.
Playing innocent, huh?
Didn't look so innocent a moment ago when she was chaining multi-layered combos!
Mr. Grant twitched visibly but didn't say anything. After all, she had won. Swallowing his pride was part of being the loser.
Just then, a loud scraping sound rang out—Milo had suddenly stood up from the podium. His abrupt movement knocked over his chair.
"Did you just say… a big brother with a colorful torch-head?!"
Milo stared at Morgan in disbelief, his voice trembling.
Now it was Morgan's turn to be confused.
She had made that person up entirely… She'd known someone might ask about the card, but she couldn't expose the System. So she had modeled the story after that scene of Yugi giving Jaden a card.
Perfectly fabricated.
Yet Milo's reaction unnerved her.
'…Don't tell me that person actually exists in this world?'
Even she couldn't picture what that person would even look like.
"Mr. Milo... you recognize that person?" the headmaster asked.
Milo finally calmed down, his gaze becoming distant, like he was looking far into the past.
He turned around, lifted his chair back up, and slowly said, "It's been so long... none of you would have met him. But he does exist. Officially recognized by the Duelist League. The one and only—Duel King."
"Whoooa—!"
Gasps erupted from the entire hall.
"He's real?! I thought Morgan made him up!"
"And he's the Duel King?! That's the number one Duelist in the entire world!"
"Morgan's misfortune turned into a blessing in disguise!"
"No wonder he'd lend her such a powerful card! Only the Duel King would be that generous with a stranger!"
Students began buzzing with speculation and admiration.
Morgan, who had been a complete underdog, had met the Duel King and gone on to become the top Duelist in school—even beating a teacher.
Too bad no one else could replicate that miracle. All they could do was envy her.
Even Mr. Grant stared at Morgan with envy in his eyes. To be trained by the Duel King… that was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Morgan could even claim to be his disciple. Just that title alone would attract outrageous offers from every major club.
Her future potential was limitless.
Meanwhile, Morgan stood there with her mouth agape.
She couldn't believe it. She had made up that whole story, and somehow… it came true?! He actually exists in this world?! And he's the Duel King?!
She had no idea what to say.
"But... how come we've never heard of him before?" the headmaster asked, puzzled. He was pretty senior himself.
"The League kept it under wraps. It's no surprise you don't know. Even I only met him once."
"Rumor has it he travels the world. I never imagined he'd show up in Solmere City. It's a shame we didn't know in advance."
Milo sighed and turned to Morgan. "Did he say anything else to you?"
Morgan's mind spun, then suddenly lit up. "He told me not to mention him. To keep it secret. But now..."
Milo didn't seem surprised. He nodded and said to the headmaster, "She's telling the truth. Headmaster, from this point forward, everything said here must remain confidential. If this leaks, the League will..."
"Understood, understood..."
The headmaster looked like he'd just finished a cold shower. His handkerchief was soaked.
He knew exactly what would happen if this got out. He'd lose his position in an instant.
And if it went on record with the League, he'd be barred from any Duel-related profession. Becoming a Pro Duelist would be out of the question.
No student here could accept those consequences. Everyone fell dead silent.
Meanwhile, Morgan was still in a daze.
…She never expected her bold-faced lie to come true like this.
