Chapter 599: Li Fa's Questions
"Sushi!"
As soon as Yuqi excitedly said it out loud, a plate with rolls of sushi appeared right on the table.
"Here, you happy?"
"Muah! Thanks, babe!"
With a kiss on the cheek, Xiaoyun smiled as he handed her a pair of chopsticks before watching her enjoy the food one at a time.
"Mmm, it's so good! I should just have you be my personal chef every day... It would be such a dream for me."
"You wish."
After eating through most of the rolls, Yuqi suddenly noticed him sitting there, just watching her eat the whole time.
"You want some?" Yuqi offered as she picked one of the salmon sushi pieces up with her chopsticks.
"I'm good. I'm not that hungry——"
Before Xiaoyun could finish talking, his stomach suddenly started rumbling, forcing him to admit the truth.
"Okay, maybe just a little bit."
"Come on. Open wide, ahhh."
With the sushi put right against his mouth, he had no choice but to open up and accept the food.
"Mhm... It's pretty good."
"Exactly. Come on, make some more for us to eat."
Looking over to the plate, Xiaoyun was a little surprised to see it already emptied before realizing why she was being so generous all of a sudden.
"Really? Feeding me so that you can have another serving?"
"Whatttt? I would never do that. Come on, just make another one. It's not like it costs anything for you."
As she grabbed his arm and kept on shaking it, Xiaoyun eventually backed down and created another roll on the plate.
"You're the best babe!"
Watching her face filled with happiness eat up another roll of sushi, he couldn't help but smile a little.
"Here, I'll be generous enough to let you have some so you don't call me stingy all day."
Seeing her picking up the rolls once again, Xiaoyun happily accepted them as he bit down on the chopsticks.
"Mhm, I would never call you stingy. That's some fake news propaganda."
"Yeah right... Anyway, babe, can you go put these plates over to the sink? I don't want them sitting in my office."
"Fine."
---
As Xiaoyun walked out of the room with the empty plates and headed downstairs through the staircase, he was a little surprised to see someone extremely familiar.
A man in his late forties, with grey hair and everything.
"Good afternoon, Mr.Governor."
"Good afternoon... Ahem, sorry to ask this, but can I ask what your name is? I remember seeing you somewhere, but just forgot about it."
"It's understandable, sir, you're a busy man after all... My name is Li Fa. I'm the head judge of the judicial department."
"Oh, I remember now. You're the one I hired back then as judge for those scientists and soldiers, right?"
Seeing him nodding his head in agreement, floods of memory rushed into Xiaoyun's mind as Tianci's trial came right back in.
"Long time no see, Mr.Li... You're going to Yuqi's office?"
"Yeah... I have a case that I'm not so sure about." Li Fa explained as his face looked a little hesitant.
"Give me a second, let me put this away and go up with you."
---
"Hello, Mr.Li, what brought you here today?" Yuqi curiously asked as Xiaoyun came back to the office with Li Fa.
"I got a court case that I'm not sure how I should interpret it."
As Li Fa handed Yuqi a folder with a few pages of court details, Xiaoyun quickly moved over to the other side of the desk to have a look for himself.
To his surprise, it was the court cases he already knew of. Or more specifically, the one that Yueyue had told him about.
"Just prosecuted as normal. You don't have to ask me about this."
Yuqi coldly responded after seeing the person's name as one of the heads of the department of her government.
"That's the issue. I don't know how to prosecute someone who's not here in Luoping."
"What do you mean by that? Are those two couples not in Luoping?" Xiaoyun curiously asked first.
"They are in Luoping. But the salvage group that bribed them isn't here. I can only put them through trial in absentia."
"Then just put them on trial in absentia. Yueyue and I can send out a task force to track them down later."
"Yes, but, for the properties that are meant to be seized, a lot of them are extremely complicated in terms of who belongs to whom.
Not to mention, the prosecutor can't even be sure if he's supposed to prosecute the entire salvage group, or just the head."
"Obviously, the head, there's no way you can prosecute entire groups of people when the lower ones are probably not a part of it," Yuqi responded this time.
"And that's the issue. I can't issue property seizures that really hurt them. I can't tell what belongs to what."
Both Yuqi and Xiaoyun fell into silence.
They understood what Li Fa was trying to imply, but they had barely any oversight or understanding of how a salvage group functions.
Let alone coming up with an efficient way to punish a salvage group for breaking the law.
"How long are their sentences and the property seizer for the two couples that are arrested?" Xiaoyun asked.
"Most likely five to ten years. And all of their property fortified."
Hearing the severity of those two faces, it became clear what the salvage group leader should face as the person who did the bribes.
"I'll send a special team to locate their total property to see what needs to be seized before going through bankruptcy proceedings," Yuqi answered.
"Thank you."
"Oh, one more thing, can you give an extra juror spot for Xiaoyun?"
Yuqi's request surprised both Xiaoyun and Li Fa, but another problem soon arose.
"Juror spots? Um... I don't think you understand how the court works, madam. We already moved past the old juror system."
"Oh. I see... Never mind then."
"I could give a spot for People's assessor, though." Li Fa suddenly brought it up.
"What's a People's assessor?" Xiaoyun curiously asked.
"It's similar to jurors. But since we have enough people, I reverted to the old system with three judges and two to four lay judges, or People's assessor in this case."
"So, random citizens who are selected as jurors to help decide cases?" Xiaoyun questioned again.
"Well... It's similar, but they often have a similar skill set to the field being judged to help with deciding the court cases.
I can give the governor one of the spots for a day or two if he really wants to have an experience with it."
"That's perfect. Just remember to call him when the day comes." Yuqi instantly responded, giving zero room for Xiaoyun to talk.
"I'll note that down... Then looks like everything is sorted. I'll take my leave now."
As Li Fa left the office with his folder, Xiaoyun grumpily looked over to Yuqi with a bit of anger.
"Do you really want me out of this office that badly?" Xiaoyun questioned.
"Hey, it's not that I want you out of my office. I want you to show yourself in court. I need someone I can trust to see if everything is going fine there."
"Yeah, right..."
Xiaoyun rolled his eyes as he could already imagine the boring session in the court with nothing much to do.
"I'm being serious, okay? The court is something that I kept ignoring. But it's super important to this whole refugee issue."
"How so?"
Just as he was about to question her intent, Yuqi handed him the three-page document that Jianlin had put on her desk earlier.
"Read it yourself. Tell me what's the number one criminal act people have done?"
"The number one is... Shoplifting and smuggling?"
"Mhm, I need you to not just focus on the bribe case. But the other, less severe cases that go to court.
Afterward, you need to go to prison to interview those who are in jail. Just have a little chat with them and get a rough understanding with everyone inside."
Hearing her more and more detailed plan, Xiaoyun started to realize she wasn't just playing around with his whole upcoming journey to the court.
However, his mind quickly remembered something. Something super important that he almost got gaslighted on by Yuqi.
"Couldn't you send someone else to do this? Why does it have to be me?"
"Come on, babe, you're the only person I trust around here... What do I need to do to get you to do something for me?"
As Yuqi began to unbutton her dress shirt, his eyes couldn't help but begin looking more and more down where her hands were going.
"You know exactly what I want, Darling," Xiaoyun whispered as she revealed a small bit of cleavage to him.
"Too bad. Wait until we get home first. Now stop bothering me and let me finish this last few bits of work."
Seeing her stop and resume typing on the computer, he had no choice but to sit back down and wait.
