Chapter 59: Personality
Oliver instantly formed a bad impression of the woman named Rebecca.
However, just when he thought he might scold her if she said anything rude again, the woman suddenly showed an expression as if she had made a grave mistake, right after being stunned for a moment.
She even stood up right away.
"Are you serious, Edward?" she asked.
"You know the ability of my left eye—there's no doubt at all," Edward replied, frowning, clearly uncomfortable with how quickly Rebecca's attitude changed, even though he did want her to be polite to Oliver and Ivy.
"They must be truly amazing, then," Rebecca said, now looking at Oliver and Ivy more seriously as she walked toward them and extended her hand for a handshake.
"Rebecca Rothschild," she said to them with a smile, while they could not have been more surprised.
"Oliver Whitemoon!"
"Ivy Wilson!"
They had no choice but to state their names directly, as she had introduced herself.
However, they didn't respond to her handshake.
After calling them "hillbillies," how could their opinion of her change so quickly?
Rebecca Rothschild looked a little awkward, but she hid it easily.
Still smiling, she said, "Sorry about earlier, I didn't mean it that way. But lately, Edward has been far too kind to too many people, so many have tried to take advantage of him. If it's the two of you, you naturally wouldn't need to do that—you don't need anything from him. In fact, he might be the one needing something from you."
The woman chuckled, and Oliver couldn't deny that her charm was disarming. After all, she was a beautiful woman.
Even Edward, who had a naturally friendly personality, couldn't create the same effect as Rebecca.
"Edward, what are you waiting for? Invite them inside. I'll prepare some drinks for them," Rebecca added.
Edward seemed to finally remember what he was supposed to do. He turned to Oliver and Ivy.
"Guys, come on—it's a bit hot out here," he said.
Oliver nodded, and Ivy simply followed him. The two of them then followed Edward toward the back entrance of the villa while Rebecca took a different door.
"Oliver, I'll be honest—Rebecca doesn't have a great personality. She tends to look down on ordinary people but deeply respects those who are rich, powerful, or have achieved great things," Edward said as they arrived at the door.
Oliver rolled his eyes at that.
He hadn't expected Edward to be so upfront about his fiancée's personality.
"Do you like her personality?" Oliver asked in response.
"I think she's… unique," Edward replied casually.
"I think you're the unique one," Oliver said.
"Haha, don't worry too much. Honestly, we were forced by our families to get engaged—it doesn't mean we like or love each other. We're still figuring out if we're even compatible."
Oliver: "..."
The door they entered led straight into a living room that more closely resembled a palace hall.
Compared to this, even Evylin's residence was nothing—entirely different in terms of scale and luxury.
It was filled with paintings and ancient artifacts.
"Please, have a seat!" Edward gestured toward the large sofa in the middle of the room.
Not long after they sat down, Rebecca returned. She had changed into a different, short casual dress, and was carrying a tray with four cups filled with iced milk coffee.
Her face was more clearly visible now with her hair neatly done. Despite her striking figure, she was clearly around their age.
Her movements were graceful and very refined. When she placed the cups on the table one by one, she gave off the air of a virtuous housewife.
"Oliver, Ivy, please have a drink. This milk coffee was made using a family recipe passed down from my mother's side, who run the largest luxury café business in Europe," she said.
She sat beside Edward after saying that, observing Oliver and Ivy with curiosity.
It seemed she had completely moved on from her initial attitude and was now treating them as equals.
"Edward, did you meet them at the University of Manchester?" she asked.
She appeared to be quite a good conversationalist.
"Yes, they're also new students like me. I brought Oliver here because I wanted to try sparring with him," Edward replied.
"Ohhh…" Rebecca looked very intrigued upon hearing that.
She glanced back and forth between Oliver and Edward before saying, "That sounds interesting, but Edward, I think you'll just lose."
Edward's face twitched at that.
"Rebecca, aren't you supposed to be supporting me? Even if I fall short in your eyes, I'm still your family," he protested.
"Of course I support you, but my intuition tells me so. Yeah, I don't mind if Oliver agrees—this is a good chance for you to train," Rebecca said.
"Let's just do it later," Edward said, then seemed to remember something.
"Oliver, wait a sec—I'll go get that item I told you about. It's definitely something meant for Cultivators, but I haven't been able to figure out what it is. Maybe you'll get lucky once you see it."
He stood up after saying that and hurried up the stairs.
Rebecca only gave him a glance before turning her eyes back to Oliver and Ivy, who still hadn't touched their coffee.
"I know you're both still upset with me," she said with a bitter smile.
After saying that, she suddenly pulled out two entirely black cards, seemingly made of special plastic.
What stood out was the golden Rothschild Family logo on the front of each card.
She then placed them in front of Oliver and Ivy respectively.
"These are special cards from our family, given to our friends so they can enjoy all of our business services for free—including taking products from various stores we control at no charge. You just need to scan the logo on the card to view a list of businesses you can access. So far, Edward hasn't earned the authority to hand these out, but I have, since I've completed three business development missions assigned to the younger generation of our family. Unfortunately, Edward hasn't completed even one. Please accept these as my apology."
Oliver and Ivy looked at her oddly, occasionally glancing at the cards again.
"I don't think I've ever seen someone change their attitude as quickly as you," Oliver said.
He wasn't afraid of her and didn't need her favor, so he naturally didn't hesitate to throw a jab.
And yet, the woman was more impressive than he thought. Even after being mocked, she didn't seem affected in the slightest.
She just smiled faintly and brushed a few strands of blonde hair from her face.
"You know, my mistake was failing to detect your strength. I'm not like Edward with his observation skills, and you two hide your auras extremely well. If I had sensed your strength, none of this would've happened," she said with a light laugh.
"Right, it wouldn't have happened because you would've shown your true face from the start," Oliver replied.
"That was my true face. And this one too is my true face," Rebecca said. "People think having two faces is a bad thing, but what if that's just how some people are? Those who truly know me understand my sincerity toward people I respect. Oliver, I'm sure in the future you'll come to understand things like this as you meet more people. Someone like me may seem unpleasant from a normal societal view—but the people you think are 'good' might not necessarily be good for you."
Just as she finished saying that, Edward appeared again at the stairs, and Rebecca clearly had no intention of continuing the conversation.
Oliver glanced at Ivy and saw that the woman seemed to be seriously contemplating Rebecca's words.
He didn't know whether to laugh or cry at that.
In fact, he himself was beginning to wonder if Rebecca was right—or if his perspective had simply been too narrow.
But, regardless of how he perceives people's personalities, it doesn't change the fact that Rebecca called him a bumpkin. He felt that the apology and the card weren't enough to make him stop being angry.
