Chapter 35: Infiltration
As the two of them approached the Magic Development Bureau, they slowed their pace, moving stealthily.
Standing beneath the giant, crescent-shaped building, Noah looked left and right but found no suitable entry point on the ground floor. He reached into his coat and pulled out a pair of black gloves and shoe covers. After putting them on, he placed his hands against the outer wall, then his feet, and began to scale the building like a gecko.
He checked several windows on his way up, but there were people inside all of them. After checking a few more, he finally found an empty room. Noah climbed over to the window, carefully removed the glass with his magic, and stored it in his pocket. He then took out a rope and lowered it.
Seeing the rope descend, Ur quickly grabbed it and began to climb, hand over hand. When she reached the top, she was shocked to see that Noah was holding the other end of the rope with just one hand. Is he really that strong?
Seeing she had made it, Noah lifted the rope and moved it next to the window. Ur used it to swing over to the windowsill and then lightly jumped inside. Once she was in, Noah pulled up the rope, climbed in after her, and replaced the glass in the window, landing silently on the floor.
The room was filled with toys and decorated like a child's bedroom, with a large, whimsical-looking bed. It seemed a child lived here.
After Noah landed, Ur walked a circle around him.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"I'm wondering where you got so many gadgets."
Noah reached into his coat and pulled out a thick stack of magic cards. "All the tools I've prepared are in here. I made some of them myself, but most of them were bought. I didn't have enough time, so I have fewer custom-made tools than I'd like. I have to make do with what I can buy on the market."
Ur looked at the stack of cards; they could clearly hold a massive amount of gear. She didn't ask any more questions and changed the subject. "Where are we going next?"
"First, we're going to the data room. We'll collect and copy all the information inside to use as evidence."
Hearing Noah state their destination without a moment's hesitation, Ur had a sudden thought. "You haven't been here before, have you?"
"No, but I've investigated this place thoroughly and even obtained its architectural blueprints. When I first learned this was a place for developing new magic, I became very interested. Because I love magic, I thought I would come to visit and study here one day. But organizations that research new things like this often have a dark side, so I did some advance research. That way, if I ever needed it, I wouldn't be flying blind. See? It's come in handy, hasn't it?"
Ur was at a loss for words at his level of preparation. But having someone so thoroughly prepared as her teammate gave her an immense sense of security.
"By the way, the glasses I gave you also have a short-range, encrypted communication function. Just channel a little bit of magic into them, and you'll figure out how to use it."
Ur tried it and understood immediately. "So, shall we get going now?"
"Let's go. Time to uncover the darkness in this place."
Noah used his magic to confirm that no one was outside the door. He opened it, and the two of them slipped out.
The corridor had a dark green floor with a pattern of green circles of various sizes. The walls were made of white square tiles, with white lights embedded in them. Noah looked left and right, got his bearings, and then led Ur forward.
Thanks to Noah's impeccable preparations, the people they passed in the halls never noticed them. After a series of twists and turns, he led Ur to a room with a sign that read "Data Room" and stopped.
He took out a magic tool and picked the lock in a few seconds. He then stuck a thin film-like device to the wall next to the door before the two of them went inside.
"That thing you just put on the wall was...?"
"It's to monitor the situation outside the door. It'll prevent someone from walking in on us while we're searching for the files."
Inside the room, they were greeted by row after row of shelves, all packed with documents. Noah randomly picked one up and flipped through it. The contents were shocking. There was no attempt to cover anything up; the cruel and inhumane experimental procedures and data were all recorded in plain detail. Noah felt that the researchers here must have abandoned their humanity long ago.
Ur, standing beside him, was already seething with rage, her magic beginning to leak out uncontrollably. Noah quickly cast more concealment spells and hissed at her, "Calm down!"
Ur was startled back to her senses and immediately reined in her magic. Once he saw she was back to normal, Noah began his work. First, he cast several more spells to mask their magic within the room. Then, he took out box after box of blank paper. With a spell, the documents on the shelves were copied, one by one. Noah stored the duplicated files in a special set of cards. The process was incredibly fast; in a flash, the contents of several shelves had been copied and stored.
Ur wanted to help but didn't know where to start. Seeing this, Noah said to her, "Just be ready. If we get discovered, I'll need you to hold them off."
This reassured Ur, and she began to focus and adjust her state of mind.
Fortunately, no one entered the room the entire time Noah was copying the files. After checking to make sure he hadn't missed anything and confirming the hallway was clear, he and Ur left the room. He retrieved the device from the wall.
Now we'll continue to the other rooms that might contain data and keep copying, Noah's voice sounded in Ur's mind. She nodded.
Following the blueprints Noah had found, they went from one potential room to the next. If they found someone inside, they would hide. If it was empty, they would move quickly. Before entering any room, they would scan it first. If it was occupied, they would mark it and move on to the next. It took a great deal of time, but they eventually checked most of the rooms that could possibly contain data.
Along the way, Noah also internally sabotaged the magic-shielding devices in various important rooms, leaving no trace on the outside. They also witnessed several ongoing experiments, which he recorded with video and photos.
There were a few close calls where they were almost discovered. Ur was already prepared to fight her way out, but thanks to the spells Noah had cast in advance and the magic items he used, they managed to get through each situation without incident.
Was it good luck? No, it wasn't. This child is just too well-prepared. With this level of preparation, it's very hard for accidents to happen.
Finally, they reached the director's office. It was empty. After entering, they saw that the files on the desk were neat and tidy. Since they hadn't seen the director, Brain, in any of the other rooms, he was likely not in the facility at all.
Noah copied the documents in the office and then returned with Ur to the child's room they had first entered. It was still empty.
Noah reopened the window and lowered the rope. Ur went down first. Noah replaced the glass before climbing down after her.
It wasn't until the Magic Development Bureau was almost out of sight that the two of them finally deactivated their concealment spells. Ur looked at Noah with concern; his face was pale from the exertion.
