Chapter 34: ch. 34 Testing abilities
Starting from the top of its head, the corpse of the Polar turned into particles and began revolving around Nick's figure before pouring into his fourth slot. Its entire body condensed and took the symbol of a bear with it mouth open, ready to devour it's prey.
"Aaaaahhhhhh!!!!" Collapsing to the snow, Nick felt an even more intense pain than all of his previous three absorption put together.
He felt the bones shifting and thickening, his muscle grew then condensed and his nose because much more sensitive.
The pain lasted for over 5 minutes until it instantaneously went away, allowing him to feel the overwhelming strength. It felt like he had shed his human form and was reborn a god, this feeling of strength was intoxicating.
Besides the intoxicating strength boost, the first thing he noticed was that while he only had a long sleeve shirt on, it only felt slight chilly despite being -7°F out.
The second thing was his smell. He subconscious knew how to toggle it on an off which he felt immensely thankful for because it was nearly unbearable.
A polar bears nose was one of, if not the best in the world! Nick could now smell the fish and the salty ocean beneath the foot thick ice and even the seal carcass he passed 15 miles away!
He smelt the gunpowder residue from his shotgun, the gas in his snowmobile, even his own body odor smelt overwhelmingly foul to him. He wanted to immediately turn it off but knew better and decided against it.
He knew his smell was an incredibly useful ability, but if it's affect was this painful out in the middle of Alaska surrounded by nothing, then using it in a city would definitely be excruciating. He decided to keep it on for the rest month, then when he gets back to a major city toggle it on everyday for as long as he can until he gets acclimated to the revolting stench of civilization.
Nick had another ability, it was similar to his snakes scales called so Nick nicknamed it Bear Body. Unconsciously pulling on the connections to his four square, his black hair turned white as more hair began sprouting out of Nick body, his skin thickened to a dense leather and his bones grew larger and thicker.
Hearing his clothes stretch and begin to tear, he immediately deactivated his ability and his body began shrinking back to normal size. While he didn't get to test out it's capability, he knew it made him much stronger and probably able to survive low caliber guns like an actual polar bear!
Nick had to consciously control himself, the feeling of gaining such power so quickly was addictive. He felt a primal urge to yell and test himself but stopped himself, he put on the winter coat even though he didn't need it and just sat down on the snowy floor.
Just this simple action felt like an agonizing act of self control for him, it was like being hopped up on adrenaline and meth but forced to thread a sowing needle.
The snow felt like a refreshing breeze and helped calm down Nick's rampaging mind, he took deep breaths and slowly exhaled. He didn't know how long he laid there on the floor breathing, but eventually he got used to the feeling of strength and sat up.
"I guess my night vision increased as well, I don't even need flashlights with all these stars out." The once dark and scary landscape appeared to Nick like a high resolution black and white movie.
He stood up and walked to his snowmobile in slow measured step, still getting use to the affects of absorbing the bear. Getting onto it, the vehicle buckled into the snow because of Nick's new weight.
With his bones and muscles becoming denser, he now weighed over 350lb despite looking toned and thin for a 6'3 man!
The snowmobile sputtered to life after he turned the ignition and he quickly set off back to town, half worried about that strange Seal carcass and half hoping to just relax for the rest of the month. But of course, Nick's hopes were immediately dashed as he drew closer to the town of Barrow.
As he approaches the town, he first got hit with a metallic smell of blood then he saw off in the distance smoke and fire. Nick turned off his snowmobile and reloaded his shotgun, deciding to walk the rest of the distance to the town to not draw any attention from whatever the hell was going on.
Nick traveled through the fresh snow to avoid the road and trails leading to the town, not wanting to get spotted by whatever had caused this destruction.
Hopping over a fence of someone's back yard, he noticed that a dozen sled dogs lay frozen as puddles of red ice seeped out of them.
"These cuts were clean, this had to have been done by a single quick slice. Could be a knife or it co-" a revolting stench of decay and overwhelming rot hit Nick's nose as he spun around.
There standing before him, was a pale white humanoid with blood dripping down his face and a severed leg in its hand, Nick noticed the leg was too short for an adult...
Nick panicked movements caused a sadistic smile to blossom on the creatures face, two rows of jagged and sharp teeth were revealed. It took a bite of the leg before opening its blood stained mouth to speak.
"similis porcellum parata cae-"*Boom*
Nick's shotgun slug tore a hole straight through this humanoids head and exploded out the back of it, the mist of pink grey matter proof of the guns power.
"It's impolite to talk with you mouth full, you piece of shit!" Allen looked at the small human leg, his hatred for the being rose.
Looked down at the creatures body, Nick's anger filled mind cooled down some as logic began to prevail.
'They look and act similar to a vampire but they're different from the ones in the Winchesters journal, these guys look more primal and almost feral.' With quick wit, Nick turned on his snake eyes and saw the creatures body temperature was completely cold despite having just been shot.
'Vampire or not they are definitely undead, this fucking sucks! At least if it was a werewolf or something Living I could absorb them, but I was specifically given the ability to only absorb living creatures, vampires aren't living!'
This was exactly why Nick stayed away from any potential ghost or demon cases, if he was gonna risk his life to kill a supernatural creature that's terrorizing humanity, he'd want to be able to absorb it and grow stronger!
'Still, why would a group of them come together and risk their existence to attack this town, this is very strange beh-' Nick's eyes widened as the creatures hand twitch.
'Its got regenerations, looks like it's leaning more towards a primal vampire than anything else. I guess decapitated and burning the bodies is the only way to kill it, but if they're like normal vampires then these fuckers are extremely dangerous. One bite and I'm gonna transform into one of them!'
Nick only had a knife so decapitation would be hard to do mid combat, he'd more than likely have to wound them enough to be able to sever their head. Nick still didn't know how many Vampires there was.
Nick had spent a month studying and copying literature from Bobby singer, the world's most knowledgeable hunter. He knew there was a cure for vampirism if bitten so long as the person didn't consume blood, but it would require him to get a litany of herbs and ingredients that were impossible for him to acquire in Alaska. Not to mention these vampires were different than the normal ones so the cure might not even work.
This meant if bitten, Nick would have to endure not consuming blood for atleast a month, obtain the blood of the vampire that turned him and aquire dozens of rare herbs to create a cure for vampirism. Nick knew it would be next to impossible for him to do all that, so he couldn't allow himself to get bit.
Noticing flickering shadows that surrounded him, Nick stood straight up as his left hand grasped onto his revolver and drew it. The revolver would look comically large in a normal person's hands, yet in Nick's they looked completely normal.
"You guys are slow to react to gunfire, like it doesnt matter much." Nick analyzed, figuring that they were complacent and underestimated humans.
Four primal vampires jumped down from the buildings around him and surrounded Nick, their faces plastered with hatred as they looked down at the regenerating vampire and back at Nick.
"He was like that when I got here." Despite his cocky sounding tone, a similar look of anger was on Nick's face.
From the silence of this town he knew most of its inhabitants had already been killed, over a hundred people had been killed in just a few hours.
Thinking back to the diner with the mother and child, Nick swore he'd make these creatures pay for what they did!
