Chapter 5: I'm so glad
With Toriel gone, I decided the smartest move was to wait for her to come back patiently. After all, we didn't even have a weapon.
I glanced at Frisk, deciding to make some small talk with her. I was quite curious about her background.
"Where are you from? Before all this happened," I asked.
Frisk thought for a moment and replied, "Hmm... I lived in Hometown. In a small apartment."
"And you?" She then asked in a softer voice.
"I also live in Hometown. In the northeast section." I lightly chuckled. "Small world, huh?"
Frisk nodded with a smile.
After a moment of silence, the atmosphere was rather comfortable and quiet.
"Your parents must be worried sick," I then said offhandedly, glancing at her.
Her expression faltered slightly as she looked down.
Then, with a small shake of her head, she said quietly, "I don't have any."
"Oh," I murmured.
I just made the conversation awkward now, great...
Though, I probably should have guessed that she was an orphan considering how in the game, its heavily implied that Frisk would also get adopted by Toriel.
Now I just feel insensitive...
Seeing this version of Frisk, I felt she'd be the perfect candidate to do the Pacifist Route and get the best ending, but with my presence, that's probably not going to happen...
"I'm sorry for bringing that up," I said eventually.
"It's okay," she replied with a faint smile. "I've been on my own for a while. It's not too bad."
She then glanced up at me, and hesitantantly asked, "What about you? Why were you at Mt. Ebott?"
Don't you already know? I chuckled inwardly.
Seeing my neutral expression, to my amusement, almost immediately, she caught herself and waved her hands a bit. "I-I mean… you don't have to answer if it's too personal! Sorry…" She quickly stated, worried she had overstepped.
How cute. I faintly smiled at her reaction.
After a moment, I bluntly gave a reply.
"I went there to take my own life."
Her eyes widened slightly.
"I figured that doing it would be easy. And going to the mountain no one comes back from was just the perfect place I guess," I continued, giving a casual shrug.
Of course, with this system and the awakening of my memories, I didn't exactly want to die anymore. But I still have this strange way of thinking that despite me not wanting to die, if I faced death, it wouldn't be that hard to accept.
Frisk was quiet for a long time, her expression unreadable. Then she asked in a low voice, "Why?"
I showed a small smile and answered in a steady tone, "Everyone I cared about had passed away. One by one, until I was the last one left… and eventually, I felt that living anymore was pointless. I guess that was why I went to this mountain. Without no one to remember me, it felt like a simple and effortless decision. Plus, I didn't want my death to be inconvenient for other people."
I was talking about this subject like it was the weather. But Frisk could clearly feel the weight behind my words.
Frisk didn't say anything right away, however, her brows furrowed at my words. Her lips were pressed into a thin line in a seemingly frustrated yet earnest way.
Then, softly, she suddenly said, "…Don't do it."
"Hm?" I tilted my head in confusion. She was too quiet for me to make out her words.
She looked up at me, her eyes meeting mine. She had a serious expression, as she repeated with a raised voice, "I said don't do it! Don't try to die again!"
I blinked in surprise.
"You can't just… disappear like that," she continued, her voice soft yet firm. "Even if you think no one will remember you, I will. So you can't."
Her voice wavered at the end, her expression caught somewhere between a glare and an earnest plea.
"I'll remember you," she said seriously as if making a promise. "Even if no one else ever does. Even if you think you don't matter… you can't die."
I stared at her. For a long second, I didn't know what to say. To hear those words from someone who barely knew me?
It was ridiculous.
Completely, utterly absurd.
And yet… those words had undeniably touched the depths of my soul. Was this the skill of the protagonist of this world?
"…Pfft!" I suddenly felt like laughing, but I tried to suppress it to the best of my ability.
But it was too late. I soon bursted out laughing.
Her words had caught me off guard in the best way possible.
"Hahaha!"
Frisk stared at me, startled and a little indignant. "H-Hey! What's so funny?! I'm serious!"
"I know," I chuckled, wiping my eyes. "That's what makes it so funny."
She puffed her cheeks, clearly offended.
But despite my teasing, I felt something warm stir in my chest. Something that hadn't been there in a while.
Hope?
Maybe.
I didn't know what it was exactly, but it felt nice.
It took me a few seconds to regain my composure.
"Thanks, Frisk," I said eventually in gratitude. "I'll keep that in mind."
She looked at me, still a bit pouty, but her expression softened as she nodded.
...
Twenty minutes quickly passed.
Frisk and I were still sitting around, killing time with random chatter. Favorite foods, weird dreams, dumb facts we half-remembered from school and other topics.
Toriel still hadn't returned.
I leaned back against the stone pillar, glancing at the path she disappeared through.
"…She's taking a while," I mused aloud.
"Maybe she got lost," Frisk joked lightly.
"I highly doubt that." I chuckled. "She likely knows this place better than the back of her hand."
Frisk smiled. "I guess so, however, I wonder if—"
But then, mid-sentence as she was talking, Frisk suddenly froze.
Her eyes widened, her body tensed, and in the next instant, she staggered backward as if struck by something invisible.
"Frisk?" I said, pushing off the pillar.
She stumbled and nearly fell, but I instinctively caught her in time.
She was trembling.
Her eyes were wide and her breathing had noticeably become unsteady.
"Frisk?" I repeated, more serious this time. "Are you okay?"
She looked at me in a daze. Then, her lips quivered. Tears began welling up in her eyes before they soon streamed down her cheeks.
I stared at her, stunned.
I'd seen people cry before. But this… this wasn't just sadness.
It was shock. Horror. Relief.
As if she'd just seen something words couldn't describe.
Her trembling hands reached up and gripped the front of my shirt, clutching it tightly like I might disappear if she let go.
"I'm so glad," she whispered, her voice shaking. "I'm so, so glad…"
She was looking at me with a face as if she'd just seen a ghost.
Then...
It struck me.
Her ability.
It was called regression.
As the protagonist of a game, she could naturally respawn. But unlike a game, dying was traumatic as hell. I realised I had a similar perspective to Subaru's friends whenever he used the ability "return by death!"
My expression grew serious.
That could only mean one thing. In the future... both of us would likely be killed!
Moreover, only Frisk would remember!
This would explain her sudden loss of composure and grief!
