Chapter 772: The Night Demon Appears
Rumble——
Aircrafts take off from Changhe Base, including transport planes and fighter jets.
The transport planes carry packaged food, inhibitors, and virus vaccines to be air-dropped all over the country. Fighter jets handle scouting and escort duties; with flying zombies now appearing, the skies aren't 100% safe, so thorough preparations are essential.
"Xiao Jin, let's go too!"
Wang Tao pats the Golden Eagle beneath him, which immediately spreads its wings and takes off, carrying a large amount of supplies away from Changhe Base.
Assigning Wang Tao to air-drop supplies is like killing a chicken with a cattle knife, but his main objective isn't the air-drop; it's to hunt zombies and find other researchers. Air-drop is just a side task.
Wang Tao brings only the Golden Eagle, Lightning, and Taxue.
During the last search for the Golden Eagle, Wang Tao hunted many mutant beasts and obtained some promotion potions, making Lightning and Taxue almost at the Third Order Peak, nearly ready for a Fourth-level ascension.
He's bringing them out, hoping to find the opportunity to let them ascend to Level 4. Human ascensions don't work the same way; humans need hidden attributes and awakenings, but mutant beasts might ascend after a nap or a fight. It's worth taking them out often; if they ascend, it's a big win, and if they don't, it doesn't matter since they can still assist Wang Tao.
Wang Tao directs the Golden Eagle to fly towards the first target location per the pre-planned map.
Shortly after, they arrive at the destination.
Looking at the ruins below, Wang Tao frowns slightly:
"Doesn't look like there are any people here..."
He has the Golden Eagle fly lower, then senses for any human presence, confirming there's none, while Lightning shakes its head indicating it hasn't smelled anything.
So Wang Tao has the Golden Eagle hover for a while, as he lands with Lightning and Taxue.
"Roar——"
As Wang Tao lands, large numbers of zombies suddenly appear from various corners, rushing towards him.
Some zombies are completely rotten, while others still have recognizable faces. Clearly, these zombies haven't been transformed for long.
"Sigh..."
Wang Tao sighs.
He understands now, the base intelligence wasn't wrong; it's just that the survivors are gone.
The military at Changhe Base constantly seeks ways to rescue survivors, but it's not as simple as saving someone right away; thorough preparations are necessary, or it ends up like a failed rescue attempt.
Survivors need prioritization, with areas closer to Changhe Base and larger populations set as higher priority. Changhe Base only has so many people with limited abilities and can't save everyone at once, but must proceed slowly with selection.
Where Wang Tao is now, it's somewhat far from Changhe Base. There aren't many survivors here and they're scattered among small factions. Hence, the rescue priority isn't high. But it doesn't mean Changhe Base has completely abandoned them — aid can still be provided, like air-dropping supplies.
Before it rains, Changhe Base conducted an air-drop here, observing roughly over a hundred survivors. But now, there's not a single person—all have either turned into zombies or been eaten... This area is utterly overrun.
Buzz——
Wang Tao swiftly eliminates all incoming zombies, confirming no survivors, and then ascends to the Golden Eagle, heading to the next destination.
The second location is similar to the first, likewise overrun, but unlike the first, a Third-Stage Lord Zombie appears here. And this Third-Stage Lord Zombie looks rather "young," suggesting it was human just days ago.
Typically, humans turning into zombies become Level 1 Ordinary Zombies, but exceptions exist, especially if the person was an Ability User in life. Clearly, this Lord Zombie was an Ability User but likely not a Third-Stage, otherwise, it would have some self-defense abilities...
While pondering, Wang Tao's hands continue attacking, soon clearing the zombies here too.
It's not that he insists on clearing these first, second, third-stage zombies; his goal is Four-level zombies, but since he's here, it's convenient.
Next, Wang Tao flies to several places, finally seeing living humans. He doesn't communicate with the survivors but directly drops the supplies and leaves. Though he could take these people away, his mission is clear—becoming stronger. Only by growing stronger can he rescue more people, thus requiring decisive prioritizations in some aspects.
By noon, the Golden Eagle has expended all air-dropped supplies, and Wang Tao is now far from Changhe Base.
Changhe Base is built in a very remote location, and the closer you get to Changhe Base, the fewer the zombies. By the same token, the farther away from Changhe Base, the more zombies there are. For instance, now Wang Tao is hovering over a city, with densely-packed zombies below causing hair-raising fear, including many Four-level zombies who are fixated on the Golden Eagle in the sky—were it not for their flight incapability, they would have charged up by now.
"You are the ones,"
Wang Tao smirks.
Upon command, the Golden Eagle dives down like a missile, crashing into the zombie herd, instantly causing chaos with massive damage numbers appearing over the zombies' heads.
Faced with the large Golden Eagle, these zombies show no fear; the larger the size, the better the target for attacks. But unexpectedly, the Golden Eagle's size suddenly shrinks, causing many attacks to miss, and when they manage to regroup to target the smaller Golden Eagle, they find there's not just the Golden Eagle, but a human, a cat, and a dog.
