Apocalyptic Disasters: Carrying a bun and hoarding supplies

Chapter 600: One After Another (2)

"What kind of tasks were given to you?" While Shen Zhen was arranging work for the pregnant women, Bai Meiyue was also facing the elderly who had been settled in the west wing. This place was a bit close to the main mansion. After all, they were no longer young, and if something happened to them, Bai Meiyue would be able to help them in time.

Of course, she hoped that such a thing wouldn't happen.

One of the elderly stepped forward and replied, "There were no tasks given to us. Officer Fox told us that we didn't need to work hard, as our son was out there working hard to make sure that our lives were comfortable. He would bring us supplies and –uh, he would even give us crystal nuclei every time he came to see us."

When Bai Meiyue heard his words, she frowned. It seemed like Fox had already ruined their habits; this won't do. How was she supposed to take care of this pampered lot? She sighed and then said to them, "Then you all can start by watering and taking care of the crops in the greenhouse."

She paused and added, "Is there anyone who knows how to make manure?"

A few of the old women looked at one another and then raised their hands. They looked tentative, as if they didn't want to work hard, but they had no other choice. Well, indeed, they had no other choice!

Bai Meiyue nodded appreciatively. She said, "You all can join the team that is in charge of making manure. Don't worry; as long as you are willing to work hard, you will live a good life until your sons, daughters, or grandchildren take you away."

Listening to the words of the woman in front of them, the elderly turned sombre and resigned. There were a few who didn't like it and were dejected, but there were also some who understood the situation and agreed. They knew that they could no longer live in the same fashion as before; after all, the reason Yu Miaomiao was treating them so well was because the woman wanted to keep them dependent on her, such that they would not entertain thoughts of escaping.

The elderly had seen how much their family members had suffered, so naturally, they wouldn't want to fall into the same pit again. With Bai Meiyue telling them to work, at least they were certain that Bai Meiyue would not use them as leverage against their children.

Bai Meiyue did not have so many thoughts. She settled the old and young before turning around and heading out of the mansion. When she reached the backyard, she saw the plants that she had planted across the boundaries of the mansion reach out and attack the mutated goat that had walked a bit too far from the shelter.

Seeing the bush attack the mutated goat, Bai Meiyue was not surprised. Since this mansion was not under the attack of the mutated bugs, she knew that these bushes must be having a hard time getting the nutrition that they usually got in the penthouse. Anyway, they had too much livestock, and with the growing rate of these mutated animals, she didn't have to worry about running out of meat. Like, ever.

She watched the potted bush spit out a round of fur on the ground and clicked her tongue.

"Miss Meiyue!"

Bai Meiyue turned to look behind when she heard someone call, and frowned when she saw that it was Tong Huan. Wasn't she taking care of the wall's construction alongside? Why was she here?

"What happened?" Bai Meiyue asked, sensing there was something wrong.

Tong Huan panted heavily and then said, "It's—Its…"

Bai Meiyue arrived at the gates with a dark expression. She looked at the man standing in front of her and questioned, "What is up with you all? Can't you give me some peace!?"

She wondered why she had spent so many months looking for this place if she was going to find out so soon. And those zombies, since when did they become so easy to kill? It was like they were being looked down upon.

All this hard work, only to be traced down in a matter of a few days.

Bai Meiyue suddenly felt like she was a clown who was acting smart.

Fox, who was looking around, paused and turned to look at Bai Meiyue. He smiled at her and bowed in front of her like a gentleman. "It's a pleasure to meet you, too, Miss Bai."

Bai Meiyue felt quite amused and helpless facing Fox. This man was really sly; even though she had clearly shown her dissatisfaction, he was still able to smile. And as the old saying went, it was impossible to hit a smiling face, and even Bai Meiyue found it quite hard to hit the face in front of her. Even though she was much more cold-hearted than others.

"Why are you here? No, how did you even find this place?" Bai Meiyue asked with a hint of annoyance. This place was at a three-hour distance from the safe base; how come everyone was finding it with so much ease, as if it was located right in the neighbourhood? It seemed like she did the right thing by adding more security measures.

"It was quite hard," Fox mused with a hint of amusement in his tone. "Your convoy separated in three directions, and I had to send quite a lot of people to trace you guys down. Fortunately, my men were skilled, and they were able to track you down, Miss Bai. I was losing hope."

As he finished speaking, the sound of someone whimpering echoed behind him, and Bai Meiyue glanced behind him. When she saw the young and old standing behind Fox, she understood what had happened, and she closed her eyes before inhaling deeply. Even without the man saying anything, Bai Meiyue seemed to have understood what this man wanted her to do and why he sought her out.
