Beyond Mortals

Chapter 16: Episode 16: Blurred Realities

Alex opened his eyes, the harsh morning light making him squint. He remembered the events of the previous day, a surge of dread accompanying the memory. He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stood up, but his face was downcast. He headed to the kitchen, where his parents were already at breakfast to get ready for school.

"Morning, Dad," Alex said, trying to sound casual.

His father smiled. "Morning, Alex. Slept well?"

Alex hesitated. "Yeah, I did. Thanks."

His mother chimed in, "Don't forget your dental appointment at 3:00 PM today."

Alex's stomach dropped. "Right, I didn't forget." The word 'didn't' hung in the air, implying that he was indeed, dreading the appointment.

The tension between them was palpable, and Alex couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He quickly finished his breakfast, eager to escape.

As he headed out the door, he spotted Nate waiting. "Hey, man," Nate said, grinning. "Ready for another day of... stuff?"

Alex shrugged. "Ready as I'll ever be, I guess."

The two friends set off towards school, chatting and laughing about their weekend. But the conversation was cut short by their arrival at school, where the day's schedule awaited them. During their school lunch, Alex kept glancing at his watch, growing more and more worried because Leannah hadn't showed up.

After a series of classes, Alex and Nate grabbed a quick lunch in the cafeteria. Leannah appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and the two friends exchanged a nervous glance.

"Hey," Leannah said, smiling. "What's going on?"

"Nothing, just the usual," Alex replied, trying to sound nonchalant. "Hey, where have you been?"

"Just... around," Leannah said, her eyes scanning the cafeteria. "I've been studying the maps, trying to pinpoint the location of the nexus."

Nate raised an eyebrow. "The nex...what now?"

Leannah nodded. "Yes, exactly. The nexus is a... a doorway between worlds, It helps Alex master his abilities quickly. We need to find it to get to the training ground."

Alex's eyes widened. "You mean... you're talking about a portal to another world?"

Leannah smiled. "Sort of. It's not exactly a portal, but it's a way to navigate the multiverse."

School continued and the trio had to depart. The misery was soon over for them and they Alex and Leannah gathered at their usual spot, the school's park while Nate was still packing his books and stuff.

Alex looked at his watch, panicking. "Hey, I gotta go. Dentist appointment," he blurted, shoving his tray away.

Leannah noticed his anxiety. "Everything alright?"

Alex nodded. "Yeah, yeah. Just, you know, fillings and stuff."

As he rushed towards the exit, Nate called after him, "Dude, you okay? I thought you didn't have any cavities!"

Alex waved him off. "Gotta run!"

He quickly made his way home, his mind racing. He knew his parents were expecting him, and he couldn't afford to be late. He had to find a way to tell his parents about everything, to make them understand what was happening.

Back in his room, Alex sat on his bed, staring at his reflection in the mirror. He ran a hand through his hair, feeling a sense of frustration. He was torn between his normal life and the extraordinary adventures he was experiencing.

He looked at his watch again, growing more and more nervous. He knew that if he didn't go, he would only disappoint his parents.

Finally, he took a deep breath and stood up, deciding to face the music. As he walked towards the bathroom to brush his teeth, his phone buzzed with a notification. He then heard a knock on his window, It was Leannah. She without hesitate...climbed in.

"Hold up what the heck....my neighboures are gonna see you?", Howled Alex.

" I know you have this weird appoinment but you have to come with me", Leannah Replied

Alex felt a surge of adrenaline. He was being pulled in two directions, torn between his obligations and the call of the unknown.

He glanced at the clock again. "Three o'clock," he muttered. " Alright you know where to find me my mom is downstairs I have to go. You do know where to find me, right...even though you don't know half of the city?"

"Oh please." Leannah replied as she went spiderman out of the window.

He quickly brushed his teeth, and headed downstairs, trying to act as normal as possible His mother was waiting for him, a concerned look on her face.

"Ready to go, honey?" she asked.

Alex hesitated, torn between his responsibilities and his desires. He wanted to be a normal kid. But he wanted to know more about Leannah's request. He wanted to train and hone his skills.

He took a deep breath. "Yeah, I'm ready," he said, forcing a smile.

As his mother drove him to the dentist's office, Alex kept glancing out the window, hoping to see a sign, a clue, anything to guide him. He couldn't shake the feeling that his life was changing, that he was on the verge of something big.

At the dentist's office, he sat in the waiting room, his anxiety growing. He could feel the energy, the pull of Leannah's essence, drawing him in. He finally heard his name, and he stood up, feeling his heart race.

As the dental assistant led him to the back, she noticed his nervousness. "Are you feeling alright, dear?" she asked.

Alex forced a smile. "Yeah, just a little anxious, I guess."

He sat in the chair, and as the dentist began his examination, Alex couldn't help but think about Leannah and where she wanted to take him. He could feel the energy, the excitement, and he realized that he was no longer able to live the life he was living.

After the examination, the dentist told him he needed a filling. Alex sat back in the chair, trying to relax as the dentist administered the anesthetic.

He looked up at the ceiling, trying to think of anything but the drilling and filling that was about to happen. He thought about Leannah and the training ground. It was a dream, he realized, but it was also something real.

Suddenly, Alex closed his eyes, focusing on the sensations and emotions he was experiencing, but then he saw faces in a strange world and evreywhere was dark.

He opened his eyes, and the world around him began to blur.

He saw the dentist's office fade away, replaced by the familiar alleyway. He saw Leannah standing in front of him, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Alex" she said.

Alex smiled.

He then saw a baby on his side, "Who is that Alex asked?"

"Our child." Leannah pointed out. Leannah closed her eyes, muttered a few words, and vanished in a shimmer of light. Alex was left alone, standing in the alleyway, feeling the familiar pull of both worlds. He closed his eyes, and when he opened them, he was back in the dentist's chair, with the dentist staring down at him, a look of concern on his face.

"Are you feeling alright, young man?" he asked. "You went completely still for a moment there."

Alex blinked, trying to clear his head. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said, his voice a little shaky.

He took a deep breath, trying to regain his composure. He knew that his life was changing, and he was not liking it. He smiled, and the dentist continued with the filling. Alex found himself daydreaming about Leannah and some faces he saw with the place dark.
