Beyond Mortals

Chapter 15: Episode 15: Frozen in Fear, Forged in Fire

The Tuesday afternoon sun cast long shadows across the school grounds as the final bell rang, echoing through the halls. Alex, Nate, and Leannah, weary from their studies and the constant threat of the Dark Masters, emerged from their classroom. The air felt heavy, thick with a tension that had become almost commonplace.

"I can't believe it's only Tuesday. It feels like it's been a long week already," Alex sighed, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. He was exhausted. The weight of his newfound responsibilities, the pressure to learn and grow, was taking its toll.

"Yeah, but at least we're done with history and math today. Science tomorrow," Nate chimed in, trying to sound optimistic. "Maybe we can get some rest tonight, and train tomorrow."

"Rest? After what happened with the insert previous monster name? Rest isn't exactly an option, Nate," Leannah retorted, her expression serious. Her gaze flicked nervously toward the window. "I'm still worried about Morath. He's the servant of the Dark Master, and he's getting more powerful. We need to continue our training."

As if on cue, the world around them dissolved into a frozen tableau. The familiar sounds of the school – the distant chatter of students, the shuffling of feet, the distant rumble of a bus – abruptly vanished. Time itself had stopped. And then, as if conjured from the deepest shadows, Morath materialized. His form was unsettling, a shifting silhouette of darkness barely contained within a humanoid frame. Eyes, like chips of obsidian, locked onto them, radiating cold, calculating malice.

"Oh no… not again," Nate breathed, his voice barely a whisper against the unnatural stillness. A tremor ran through him. He knew this encounter could be their last.

Morath let out a chilling, breathy laugh that somehow sliced through the frozen air. "Back again, it seems. Ready for a rematch?"

Nate, trying to mask his fear with defiance, stepped forward. "Come on, dude. We get it, you're being villainous and all, but give us a break! Can't you let us have one day off?"

Morath's smile widened, revealing teeth that seemed a little too sharp. "Pleading? How very… human. But your pleas fall on deaf ears. The Dark Master demands entertainment, and you three are his stars."

Alex felt a wave of icy dread wash over him. He'd trained, yes, but not nearly enough. He knew he wasn't ready for a direct confrontation with a being like Morath. He glanced at Leannah, his eyes pleading, and then at Nate, whose jaw was set with grim determination. He knew he had to fight. They had to buy time, at least.

Morath didn't give them a moment to gather themselves. With a swift, almost invisible movement, he lunged at Alex. Alex instinctively threw up his arms to block, but Morath's attack was too fast, too powerful. The blow connected, sending a jolt of searing pain up his arm. He stumbled backward, his vision blurring.

"Alex!" Leannah cried out, her voice echoing in the frozen silence, her face etched with worry. She started to move, but the world was still frozen in place.

Alex could feel the exhaustion from their previous battle and the frantic training sessions weighing on him. He tried to find his center, to focus, to remember the lessons Leannah had tried to teach him about controlling his energy, about finding the strength within himself. He was desperate, knowing that even a moment's lapse could mean the end.

The struggle was brutal. Morath moved with an unearthly grace and speed, his attacks relentless. Alex, fueled by fear and a desperate need to protect his friends, fought back with everything he had. He dodged, he weaved, he blocked, each movement a desperate gamble.

He caught Morath off guard with a quick kick, surprising both himself and the servant. The momentary lapse gave him a brief advantage and sent the dark figure stumbling back. He quickly followed with a series of blows that landed, causing Morath to grunt and back off.

For what felt like an eternity, the battle continued. Morath's attacks became more frenzied, more powerful. Alex's movements grew more desperate, more frenzied. Leannah watched in horror as the battle raged on, her heart pounding in her chest.

Just when it seemed that Morath was gaining the upper hand, Alex landed a decisive blow, sending the dark figure stumbling backward. Morath let out a snarl of rage, but he refused to back down.

"You fools," he spat, his eyes blazing with fury. "You think you can defeat me? I have the power of the Dark Master behind me!"

With a wave of his hand, Morath unleashed a dark energy that hurtled towards Alex. The air around Alex seemed to crackle with energy as he raised his hand to block the attack. The two energies clashed in a burst of light and heat, sending Morath flying backward.

As the dust settled, Alex stood panting, his hand throbbing in pain. Leannah rushed forward, concern etched on her face. "Alex, are you okay?"

Alex nodded, wincing in pain. "Yeah... I think so."

Morath glared at them, his eyes blazing with fury. "You may have won this battle," he growled, "but the war is far from over. Until next time, young fellow..."

With that, Morath vanished, leaving the three friends shaken but relieved. As the world around them began to unfreeze, Alex stumbled forward, his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger.

"We need to get out of here," Leannah said, her voice urgent. "We don't know what Morath's master has in store for us."

Alex cradled his throbbing hand, wincing. "That… that was close," he managed, his voice hoarse. The raw fear he'd felt during the fight still clung to him.

Nate nodded in agreement, his own breath still coming in ragged gasps. "Yeah. We got lucky this time. Morath was toying with us. He could have ended it at any moment." He ran a hand through his hair, trying to shake off the lingering dread. "We need to get stronger. We have to. We almost lost this round."

"We need to get better. Fast. We're not ready for him." Alex said, looking at his hand then at his friends.

Leannah took a deep breath, her gaze hardening with determination. "We will. Morath's right – the Dark Master wants entertainment. This isn't over."

As they headed back towards the school, the familiar sounds of the afternoon resumed. The distant chatter of students, the shuffling of feet, the rumble of a passing bus. It felt strange, almost surreal, to be back in the normal world after the intensity of the fight.

"We need to analyze what happened," Leannah said, her voice steady. "What worked? What didn't? How can we improve?"

"We need to train harder," Nate added. "And better. We almost lost."

"And we need to figure out what Morath can do," Alex said, clenching his fist. "What's he going to throw at us next time?"

That evening, Alex found himself distant at the dinner table. His parents kept glancing at him, their expressions a mix of concern and something…else. Suspicion? He wasn't sure. He picked at his food, barely touching it. The conversation was stilted, and the silence between the words felt heavy. He felt trapped.

He excused himself early, claiming tiredness, and went to his room. The battle with Morath still played in his mind, replaying every moment. He knew he was hiding something, and the more he tried to bury it, the more it grew.

Later, he met Nate and Leannah at the library, as agreed. The air was hushed, and as they settled into their study spot, Alex found it hard to focus. He had to fight to keep his thoughts on the task at hand.

"Okay, so first things first," Nate said, leaning forward. "Alex, you need to work on controlling your energy, and using it the right way. And you're going to be faster."

"I know," Alex sighed. "I felt like I was just reacting. I need to anticipate. I need to be faster." He glanced at the door, suddenly feeling vulnerable, paranoid that someone was watching or listening.

"And we need to find a weakness," Leannah said. "Morath is powerful, but no one is invincible. If we can find it, we might have a chance."

"Right," Nate said, his brow furrowed in concentration. "What about his powers?"

"And the shadow attacks," Alex added, rubbing his aching hand. "They were like, solid darkness."

The paranoia was growing. Alex kept having to force himself to focus.

They spent hours poring over their notes, discussing strategies, and replaying the fight in their minds. They were exhausted, but Alex couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out, and the subtle shifts in his parents' behavior left him with an eerie feeling.

As the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows through the library windows, they finally decided to call it a night.

"We'll keep training every day," Leannah said, a determined glint in her eyes. "No more breaks. No more distractions. This is our lives now."

Nate and Alex nodded in agreement, though Alex's voice was strained. He made his excuses and quickly left the library, eager to escape the oppressive silence and the unsettling feeling of being watched.

The episode ends with Alex, carrying the weight of his secret and the added burden of his parents' suspicion, preparing for another day of training.

Alex lay in bed, trying to shake off the feeling of being watched. He'd always been a good son, a good friend – but lately, everything seemed different. His parents' behavior had become increasingly suspicious, and he couldn't shake the feeling that they knew something about his involvement with Morath.

The next day at school, Alex, Nate, and Leannah met up in secret to review their strategy. They were determined to learn more about Morath's powers and find a weakness.

"I've been thinking," Nate said, frowning. "About Morath's powers. He's got time freeze, shadow attacks... What if he has another power hidden?"

" If a shadow from the immortal steps a foot into the mortal world time freezes, so yeah it happens." Replied Leannah.

"I don't know," Alex said, running a hand through his hair. "We didn't see anything else, did we?"

"No," Leannah replied, "but just because we didn't see it doesn't mean it's not there. We need to be more vigilant. We can't afford to be caught off guard again."

As they studied their notes, Alex couldn't help but glance around the library, feeling like they were being watched. He knew it was irrational, but the sensation persisted.

The bell rang, signaling the end of their study session. Alex and his friends reluctantly parted ways, agreeing to meet up again later.

That evening, Alex walked home from the library, lost in thought. His parents' car was parked outside the house, and for a moment, he considered going around to his room via the back door. Something about his parents' behavior made him wary.

Instead, he pushed open the front door and entered the house. His parents were sitting in the living room, watching TV. The tension in the air was palpable.

"Hey, Alex," his mom said, forcing a smile. "How was your day?"

"It was fine," Alex replied, taking a seat next to his mom. "Just studying with Nate and Leannah."

His dad glanced at him, his eyes narrowing for a moment before returning to the TV. "Great. You boys need to keep up with your studies, you know."

The conversation was stilted, and Alex felt like he was walking on thin ice. He excused himself after a few minutes, claiming he needed to get to bed.

As he lay in bed, he couldn't shake the feeling that his parents were hiding something. He tried to replay the conversation from earlier, but his mind kept going back to the suspicious look his dad had given him.

The next day at school, Alex met up with Nate and Leannah in secret once again. They reviewed their strategy, but Alex's mind kept wandering back to his parents' behavior.

"I think we should be careful," Alex said, his voice low. "I think my parents know something."

Nate and Leannah exchanged a skeptical glance. "What do you mean?" Nate asked.

"I'm not sure," Alex admitted. "But they've been acting weird lately. Like, suspicious. I don't know what's going on, but I have a feeling they are onto something."

The trio fell into a contemplative silence, weighing the possibilities.

As they parted ways, Alex couldn't shake the feeling that his life was about to get a lot more complicated.
