Chapter 14: Episode 14: Back to School
The following morning dawned bright and clear, but Alex, Nate, and Leannah felt the weight of their adventures still fresh in their minds as they made their way to school. The comforting routine of school life felt oddly reassuring yet surreal after their intense encounter with the Dark Master's servant.
As they entered the building, the familiar sounds of lockers slamming and students chatting filled the air, but it felt different now—like a mask hiding the reality of their secret lives. Homeroom was first, and Mr. Clyne, ever observant, immediately raised an eyebrow as the trio shuffled in. "Ah, there you are. Care to explain your absence yesterday?"
Alex's heart raced. They hadn't prepared any specific excuses ahead of time. "Uh, we had a… family thing," Nate blurted out, clearly flustered.
Leannah interjected smoothly. "Yes, a family gathering from out of town. We had to help out." Her voice was calm and reassuring, a testament to her abilities from the Immortal World.
Mr. Clyne folded his arms, peering at them with a skeptical expression. "A gathering that took three of you out of school? Interesting. Make sure you catch up on what you missed. I trust you weren't just goofing off."
"Of course not, sir!" Alex replied quickly, relieved that Mr. Clyne seemed to buy their excuse for now.
The class moved on, but Alex felt uneasy. They needed to maintain their cover but also keep their mission in mind. Lunchtime arrived, and the trio headed to their usual table. The cafeteria buzzed with the energy of students catching up and gossiping, offering a strange sense of normalcy.
"Can you believe we actually pulled that off?" Nate said, taking a bite of his sandwich, but there was still tension in his voice.
"Barely," Alex replied. "We can't let our guard down, especially with what we're facing."
Leannah, sensing their unease, placed a hand on the table, calm and collected. "Remember, we need to keep our focus in both worlds. We can blend in here while preparing for what's coming. Besides, I can influence thoughts if we need to deflect any curiosity," she added with a subtle smile.
"True," Nate agreed, relieved. "Just don't go messing with people's minds without a solid reason!"
Their conversations shifted to lighter topics, and for a moment, the worries about the Dark Master faded into the background. They laughed and enjoyed their lunch, but Alex couldn't shake the feeling that darkness still loomed just outside their school walls. After lunch, they had history class. As the lesson continued, Alex found it increasingly hard to concentrate. Every word the teacher spoke felt distant, overshadowed by thoughts of their previous encounter and the potential danger that lay ahead. When the final bell rang, they rushed out, eager to hit the fresh air. Upon stepping outside, they approached the nearby park to stay away from prying eyes and discuss their next moves.
"We should start strategizing on how to confront the Dark Master," Alex said, serious now. "There's no telling when he'll send more servants after us."
Before Leannah could respond, several familiar faces appeared in the park—friends from school who had just exited their own classes. They waved, oblivious to the undercurrents of tension surrounding Alex, Nate, and Leannah.
"Hey, what are you guys up to?" Lisa called out, joining them. The excitement of being with their friends made Alex momentarily forget their worries. "Just hanging out," Nate said casually, trying to keep things light.
But Alex knew this was just a brief reprieve. The world outside their school was filled with challenges they couldn't ignore. As laughter echoed around them, he glanced at Leannah, who gave him a knowing look. It was a reminder that they had a mission that transcended the normal everyday occurrences of school life.
"For now, let's enjoy this moment with our friends," Alex thought, resolving to balance both worlds as best as he could. As the sun set behind the trees, they found themselves caught between two realities—one of laughter and camaraderie in school, and another shadowed by dark forces waiting to strike. They knew it was only a matter of time before they would have to act, but for now, they would cherish their bonds while they still could.
