Beyond Mortals

Chapter 13: Episode 13: Training in Shadows

The clearing was peaceful, yet the air crackled with an undercurrent of tension after the servant's ominous visit. Alex stood with a mix of determination and uncertainty, gripping the golden ring. As the echoes of the Dark Master's threat lingered in his mind, Leannah's reassuring presence helped ground him.

"Let's refocus," Leannah said, her voice steady. "We can't let fear consume us. Training is our priority now."

Nate observed from the sidelines, his expression a blend of encouragement and worry. "Just remember, you don't have to do this alone, Alex."

"I know," Alex replied, looking at both of them. "I'm ready to unlock whatever this ring can do. I'll figure it out."

Leannah nodded, impressed by Alex's resolve. "Alright then. Let's start with some basic techniques. Summoning a weapon is a good first step." She demonstrated a fluid motion with her hands, and a shimmering golden sword materialized in front of her. The blade glimmered in the sunlight, radiating warmth and power. "Focus on the intent behind your summon. Feel the energy flowing from the ring into your body."

Alex mirrored her stance, closing his eyes to concentrate. He visualized the sword he desired, the weight and balance in his hands, the moment it would be drawn in defense of those he cared about. He felt the warmth of the ring, growing brighter with each breath he took.

"Imagine it," Leannah encouraged. "Let the ring guide you."

After a few moments of deep concentration, Alex felt a surge of energy. When he opened his eyes, a golden blade flickered to life before him. It materialized in a flash, humming softly with potential. "I did it!" Alex exclaimed, disbelief mixing with excitement.

"Excellent!" Leannah smiled, pride shining in her eyes. "Now let's see if you can maintain it." As Alex held the sword, he focused on keeping it summoned, feeling a mix of exhilaration and pressure. His arm trembled slightly, and he quickly steadied himself.

"Stay calm, Alex. Breathe," Nate encouraged from the sidelines. "You've got this."

But just as confidence began to swell within him, the sword flickered and faded, leaving Alex feeling momentarily defeated. "Don't be discouraged," Leannah said swiftly. "This is just the beginning. It will take practice to strengthen your connection with the ring."

"I understand," Alex replied, determination rekindled. "Let's try again." As they continued, Leannah adjusted her training approach, incorporating varying exercises to help Alex build stamina and control. The sun climbed higher in the sky, and the training became both physically and mentally demanding. After some time, with the sun dipping toward the horizon, Leannah decided it was time to introduce another technique.

"Now we'll work on summoning your shield. This will be crucial for defense."

Alex nodded, channeling the energy of the ring once again. He visualized a protective barrier surrounding him—strong, yet translucent and shimmering. Closing his eyes, he focused intently. Just as before, he felt the warmth surge within him. This time, a golden shield formed in front of him, solid and radiating with energy. Alex grinned as he managed to maintain it, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over him.

"Great job!" Leannah cheered. "Now let's combine both techniques."

Nate watched, eyes wide with fascination. "So, can you fight with a sword and shield now?"

"Exactly," Leannah affirmed. "But remember, this will require your utmost focus. You must learn to multitask and direct energy accordingly."

Alex prepared himself again, sword in one hand and shield in the other. With newfound confidence, he began to practice switching between offensive and defensive stances, learning to anticipate imaginary strikes. However, as he trained, the earlier encounter with the servant crept back into his mind. He knew they weren't safe—not yet. "I can't shake the feeling that we're being watched," Alex said, glancing around the clearing nervously.

Leannah exchanged a concerned look with Nate. "We need to finish our training and stay alert. But right now, let's focus on growing your skills."

Just as Alex began to feel a rhythm, a rustling sound broke through the trees, drawing their attention. A moment later, a small creature darted from the underbrush, a vivid flash of color amidst the greens and browns.

"What was that?" Nate exclaimed, pointing.

Leannah and Alex turned, and Leannah smiled. "Just a forest critter. Keep your focus—don't let distractions overpower your training." As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows, Alex could sense his resolve strengthening with each passing moment.

With every swing and block, he felt the golden ring binding him tighter to his destiny, uniting him with his allies against whatever darkness lay ahead.
