Beyond the game

Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Truth Comes Out

Jamal sat at his desk, staring at the papers in front of him. The penthouse around him was quiet, the only sound the soft hum of the city beneath. He had been trying to focus on work, but his mind kept drifting. The conversation he had overheard earlier kept replaying in his mind.

It had been an ordinary day, or so he thought. He was passing through the lobby when he had overheard Malik and Jafar talking. He hadn't meant to eavesdrop, but their words had stopped him in his tracks.

Malik's voice had been casual, almost amused, as he said, "It was just a bet between Yuzarsif and us at first. He was just trying to see if he could win her over."

Jamal's heart had skipped a beat at the revelation. A bet? His mind had raced. Yuzarsif, the man Azra was so in love with, had started their relationship as a game? The thought had shaken him to his core. He had always trusted Yuzarsif, thought of him as a decent man, but if this was true… everything felt like it was built on a lie.

He had walked away from the lobby quickly, his thoughts spiraling. Now, sitting in his penthouse, the weight of that knowledge was too heavy to ignore. Should he tell Azra the truth? Or should he keep it to himself and let her figure it out on her own? His gut twisted with the uncertainty of it all.

He knew Azra well. He had watched her grow from the young, vulnerable girl in the orphanage to the strong, independent woman she had become. And now, he watched her fall for a man who, if what he overheard was true, had started their relationship as nothing more than a challenge. How could he stand by and say nothing? How could he let her continue to pour her heart into someone who might not be as genuine as she thought?

Jamal took a deep breath and grabbed his phone. The decision had to be made. He couldn't keep this from her. He was her friend, her protector—he had always been there for her. And this time, it would be no different.

His fingers hovered over the screen, hesitating for a moment. He could just call her, tell her what he knew, and let her deal with the fallout. Or he could hold back and let the relationship unfold on its own. But in his heart, Jamal knew that wouldn't be fair to Azra. She deserved the truth.

With a final, decisive exhale, Jamal tapped on Azra's contact and pressed the call button. The phone rang, each second feeling like an eternity.

Finally, Azra's voice came through, warm and familiar. "Jamal? Hey, what's up?"

Jamal's chest tightened. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "Azra, I need to talk to you. It's important."

Azra's tone shifted, a note of concern in her voice. "What's going on? Is everything okay?"

Jamal stood up from his desk, pacing in the quiet of his penthouse as he gathered his thoughts. "I overheard something today… something you need to know."

Azra was silent for a moment, then replied, "What did you hear?"

Jamal hesitated, the weight of his words pressing down on him. "I overheard Malik and Jafar talking about you and Yuzarsif. They said that when he first started courting you… it was part of a bet. A game between him and his friends to see if he could win you over."

Azra's silence on the other end of the line was deafening. Jamal could practically hear her heart racing as the words sank in.

"Azra, I didn't want you to find out this way," Jamal continued, his voice softening. "But you deserve to know the truth. I don't know where Yuzarsif's heart is now, but if it started as a bet, you need to decide if that changes things for you."

Azra's voice broke the silence, a mixture of disbelief and hurt. "A bet?" she repeated, her tone low. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?"

"I didn't know how," Jamal admitted. "I didn't want to hurt you. But you're my friend, Azra, and I couldn't keep this from you. I thought you should know."

Azra was quiet for a long moment, the weight of the revelation heavy in the air. Jamal could hear her breathing, steady but uneven. Finally, she spoke.

"Thank you for telling me, Jamal," she said, her voice tinged with emotion. "I need some time to think about this."

Jamal nodded, even though she couldn't see him. "I understand. I'm here if you need anything, Azra. Just… don't let anyone play with your heart."

"I won't," Azra replied quietly. "I'll figure this out. I promise."

Jamal let out a sigh of relief. He had told her the truth, and now it was up to Azra to decide what to do with it. The weight on his shoulders felt a little lighter, but he knew the road ahead wouldn't be easy for her.

As they said their goodbyes, Jamal hung up the phone and leaned against the window, looking out over the city. He hoped he had done the right thing. But as he thought about Azra, he couldn't help but wonder how this revelation would change everything.
