Chapter 8: Chapter Eight
Aurora's hands scrabbled frantically against the glass, her eyes fixed on Maverick's menacing figure outside. "What's going on? Why am I locked in here?" she asked, trembling.
Maverick's voice dripped with malice. "What do you think I'm going to do?"
Aurora's eyes widened in horror. "No, this isn't real. You're just trying to scare me, right?" But deep down, she knew better.
With a cold smile, Maverick pressed a button on the electronic switch, and the temperature inside began to rise. Aurora felt the heat sear her skin, and panic set in. She pounded on the glass, screaming, "Let me out! This is insane! People will die!"
But Maverick just turned up the heat, ignoring her cries. Aurora kicked at the glass door, but it wouldn't budge. She was trapped.
"How can you do this to me?" she sobbed, her eyes locked on Maverick's heartless face. "Please, let me go!"
But her pleas fell on deaf ears. No one came to her aid, and Aurora was left to face the suffocating heat alone. Her breaths grew shallow, her throat parched, and her body weakened.
Fear consumed her, and tears streamed down her face. "Help me," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
As the heat intensified, Aurora's thoughts grew cloudy. She thought of her child, and a desperate cry escaped her lips. Was this the end?
"This way, you won't get lost again." Maverick approached the glass, his eyes dark and sinister like a devil's.
"No...no, I can't...I can't die..." Aurora slid weakly to the ground, the temperature around her making her cling tightly to the glass door, as if trying to breathe in the fresh air outside, "Let me go, I really...can't die...I disappeared in front of you, why do you have to bring me back..."
Her words had no effect, and as she lifted her gaze, all she saw were Maverick's cold eyes, as if he wanted to kill her!
Aurora clutched her chest, tears streaming down her face. "Please... I promise I won't run away again. Spare me... I don't want to die." Her voice cracked as she spoke, and she collapsed to the ground, gasping for air.
Her vision blurred, but Maverick's dark figure outside the glass door remained etched in her mind, a haunting presence that seemed to sear itself into her consciousness.
As the darkness closed in, Aurora's thoughts turned to the children she had left behind. What would happen to them if she died? They were so young, so vulnerable...
Aurora's world went black.
She jolted awake, sitting up in bed with a strangled cry, her eyes wild with fear. She gasped for air, her forehead slick with sweat. Had she died? The memory of Maverick's cruel face still lingered, making her heart racing.
The familiar room left her stunned, and it took her a few seconds to realize that it was the room she had lived in before.
In other words, she didn't die?
Maverick had let her out of the steam room!
Aurora looked down at her hands, touched her face, and then, in a panic ran to the bathroom mirror.
She only felt relieved when she saw her complete and intact self inside the room. Even though she didn't die, the fear of being on the brink of deaths still lingered over her.
Maverick was too cruel!
Aurora gambled with her own life, consuming mushroom in a desperate bid freedom. She was certain Maverick wouldn't let her die - at least, not yet. It was as if she were a pawn in his twisted game, much like a spider toying with a fly in its web. The spider doesn't kill its prey immediately; instead, it wraps it in silk, savoring the struggle, before delivering the fatal blow.
But this time, when she was locked in the stream room and roasted alive, she really felt like Maverick was going to kill her. And the only reason he spared her was because she said she wouldn't run away again.
It was too terrifying...
Aurora ran back to the bedroom, looking for her ID and ticket, only to find out that they were not there. She was so anxious that tears streamed down her face, but there was nothing she could do.
She knew that her ticket and ID were with Maverick and he wouldn't give her or let her go.
How could she return to children? Saying that she wouldn't leave was just a temporary measure... This glimmer of hope, followed by the harsh truth, felt like being tossed into a deep well, only to have the rope pulled up, leaving her to drown in despair. Aurora feel desperate and almost unable to breathe.
Today was supposed to be the day she could see her children, hold their soft, milky bodies, and listen to their childish voices...
Aurora lay back, her eyes full of tears. At this moment, she missed her children too much.
She waited for the night to deepen before making a video call to her children. Mia was struggling to take care of the five kids alone and Aurora couldn't just leave yet. Her eyes remained open until 10 p.m.
She got out of the bed and locked the door before heading to the bathroom and closing the door behind her. After taking these precautions, she retrieved her phone from inside her clothes and turned it on. She quickly connected to Mia, whose worried face appeared on the screen.
"Aurora..." she said
"Mom!"
Aurora's five children chimed in before she could say anything. Their heads crowded the shining beautiful eyes shining brightly.
As she looked at their innocent faces, Aurora's eyes welled up in tears. She held back her emotions and asked, "Are you listening to Aunt Mia at home?"
"Yes!" They all replied.
Aurora hesitated to end and continued to touch the screen with trembling hands, trying to alleviate her longing for them.
"Mom, when are you coming back?" Ava, her daughter, asked in a weak and pitiful voice, tears streaming down her face.
"Mom will come back soon!" Ethan, the son with a loud voice and a big temper, said discontentedly, holding back tears.
"Ten days!" Kelvin, the second son who was silent and mature, looked disappointed and melancholy, with tears in his eyes.
Aurora felt extremely distressed.
She lowered her head to ease the impending emotional outburst.
A few seconds later, she raised her face, pulling out a strong smile, "Mom still has things to deal with here. Once it's done, Mom will come back, okay?"
"How long will it take?" David, the first son, who had been silent all the while asked.
Aurora didn't know how long it would take, but she couldn't say that to the children, "It shouldn't take too long, but Mom promises you that during this period, I will make video calls to you. Okay?"
"Mom..." Ava, who was slightly spoiled, whimpered first.
"Be good, don't cry. Mom will come back as soon as possible?" Aurora felt extremely uncomfortable, as if a knife was cutting her heart.
"Every day!" Ethan said, overbearing.
Aurora didn't know if she could make video calls every day. She looked at her friend and said, "You should go to bed now, mom will call you tomorrow."
"I miss Mom..." Julian looked disappointed, with a dismiss in his eyes.
"Mom misses you too, very much..." Aurora held back her tears and hung up the call.
She wished she could just jump into the phone screen and hug her children, giving them a sense of security.
