Chapter 630: But sigh, it was too late.
Delyth's entire life depended upon Ryan —not because she loved him and couldn't live without him, but because she was nothing without him.
Yes, she had been a renowned ballet dancer who was well-appreciated around the country. But it wasn't her dance that made her shine on the stage. It was her image around Ryan, the young CEO of Foster Ventures, that garnered her attention. '
People used to cater to her because they knew her ties with Ryan.
They favoured her and agreed to all her requests and demands because they knew that if they didn't, Ryan would anyway make it happen for her. They knew he doted on her more than he doted on anyone.
But now, if Ryan abandoned her, she would be finished. Completely over.
No, that can't happen. Just the thought made Delyth panic. She glanced at Ryan and shook her head.
Then reaching out, she desperately held his arm and cried out, "Ryan, what are you saying? How could you not be responsible for me? You promised my brother to forever look after me. You said you would make sure I live well and —"
"And didn't I make sure of all that up until now?" Ryan gave back to her, and she pulled her lips in an admitting smile.
"You did. You did. But that's not yet enough," she shamelessly spouted without caring about anything. "I mean, I have yet to restart my career and establish myself back. If you aren't going to help me, who else will? No, Ryan, tell me, you were joking and not serious about it. Right?"
Ryan felt like a fool. All this while, how was he not able to see this?
His jaw clenched, and his fingers curled into fists. Looking down at Delyth, he pulled his lips in a disdainful smile. "I am … damn serious. Every word that I spoke … I was serious about it. Very serious." And with that, he unclasped her fingers from his arm before pushing her back.
Delyth staggered —not just by his force, but because of the way everything felt shattering for her —her dream, her life, her entire world.
"Have you gone crazy, Ryan!" she almost yelled hysterically. "You promised my brother. How could you go against your words?" She then turned and hurled a vase at the floor, and in the next second, it shattered into pieces, scattering around the floor.
If it had been before, Ryan would have stepped forward to stop her from acting this frantically.
However, this time he didn't move.
He simply stood with his hands tucked into his pockets, his gaze just turned colder than before.
As the air turned heavy, it was only Delyth's heavy breaths that could be heard in the silence.
Letting his eyes scan the floor once, she gazed up at Delyth and said, "I haven't gone crazy. Nor am I going back on my words."
Delyth was about to retort, but before she could, Ryan spoke again, making her shut up.
"I promised Zeke to look after you, her baby sister. But he never asked me to look after you the entire life," he said, the weight of his words carrying the deep emotions he still hadn't let go. "He just wished and asked me to make you capable and resilient in this world so that you can survive on your own. And over the years, I made that happen … very well."
"You became a well-known ballet dancer. You were popular enough to live your life in luxury on your own. But …" he shook his head in disdain. "You never learnt to cherish it. You see something that was not possible. And in the process of attaining it, you ruined it for yourself. So, it's not that I didn't fulfil the promise. I did, but you destroyed it all with your own hands."
"No," Delyth shook her head, not ready to accept it. "You are lying, Ryan. Don't twist your words now. You have said you will take care of me on behalf of my brother. How could my brother not secure my future with you? He —"
"He was not like you, Delyth," Ryan said, his eyes staring at her with full of contempt. "He wasn't calculative. So, when he asked for the promise, he genuinely cared for you. He wanted just the best for you. Too bad, you never cherished his wish."
Shame felt creeping into her heart. But then she remembered what she was about to lose, and in that moment of realization, nothing else mattered apart for getting back the foothold.
"Ryan, I agree with all you say. I agree to it all," she raised her hand half in the air as if finally surrendering. "I admit my mistake, but can you not be cruel. Just for old time's sake … for the friendship that you shared with my brother, can you give me some leeway?"
She stepped a step forward, not caring about the glass that pierced the heel of her foot. "Help me settle back into my career and gain back the popularity that I lost. And I promise, I won't ask for anything else. I will not even come to disturb you."
And this time, she was serious.
But sigh, it was too late.
Ryan stared at her for a long moment, and it was hard to tell if he was pitying or just disdaining her further.
"Ryan, ple—"
"Instead of thinking about a career, Delyth," he interrupted her, jutting his chin toward her frame. "I think you should more care of yourself. We me gone from your world, I don't think you can any longer escape the punishment you deserve."
In the first second, she didn't understand what he meant. But the next moment, her face turned pale in realization. Her knees felt weak, and she staggered a few steps.
"No!"
However, Ryan didn't bother anymore. With his part said, he simply turned to look toward Zenith and said, "Let's go now. We are done here."
