Demon Slayer: The Tenth Hashira with Dōjutsu

Chapter 79: DSWS: Chapter 79

"The Siblings' Story"

"I don't want to die."

Those five words, spoken by Daki, echoed relentlessly in Gyutaro's mind.

"Ume!"

Suddenly, he cried out a name he'd never spoken before, yet it felt profoundly familiar and warm.

He remembered. His sister's name wasn't the harsh "Daki," but "Ume."

Then, his forgotten memories as a human resurfaced.

They were born into the Yoshiwara's lowest depths, their mere existence a drain on resources.

Before his birth, he'd nearly been killed countless times. Afterward, he was a constant nuisance, almost killed countless times more.

Yet, he survived, clinging to life despite his frail, withered body.

Waste, vermin, slow-witted loser, useless—these were the words he'd heard constantly as a child, the labels others used for him.

The world's scorn seemed tailored for him. Frail and ugly from birth, he was constantly bullied. In the Yoshiwara, where beauty was everything, he was a monster.

He ate rats and insects to survive, playing with discarded sickles left by customers.

His life changed with her birth.

Ume, his sister, named after their deceased mother's illness. Unlike him, Ume possessed breathtaking beauty from birth, his source of pride.

Gyutaro discovered he was a skilled fighter and became a debt collector, feared by all in the Yoshiwara. He found a twisted satisfaction in this, even taking pride in his ugliness.

Having such a beautiful sister lessened his feelings of inferiority. He believed their future would be brighter.

However, Ume was influenced by her brother's harsh worldview, leading her down a dark path.

At thirteen, Ume, in an act of rebellion, blinded a samurai with a hairpin. She was captured by the samurai and the madam, sentenced to be burned alive.

Returning from collecting debts, Gyutaro found Ume lying on the ground, near death. The sight of his precious sister in such a state ignited his rage and grief. He was consumed by a desperate need for revenge.

He was then ambushed by the samurai Ume had blinded. The samurai had been waiting, intending to kill them both. Despite being severely wounded, Gyutaro remained conscious.

Hearing the madam and samurai dehumanize them, his rage exploded. He swiftly killed them both with his sickles and fled with his critically injured sister.

Gyutaro desperately sought help for Ume, but no one offered it.

Despair consumed him. Watching his dying sister, he raged against the unfairness of their lives, blaming his own weakness. If he'd been strong enough to inspire fear, Ume wouldn't be dying.

But his pleas changed nothing.

Finally, he gave up, collapsing to his knees, his own wounds from the fight with the samurai threatening his life.

He waited quietly for death.

Snow began to fall. Nothing would ever forgive them, no matter how hard they tried. Their dreams of a better life were shattered, forever beyond their reach.

"My, my… how tragic."

A calm, gentle voice broke the silence. A man with white-blond hair and multicolored eyes, his head seemingly stained with blood, smiled serenely. Or rather, a demon.

His left eye bore the kanji for "Upper Moon," his right "Six," revealing his identity: Upper Moon Six.

Behind him was a beautiful, deceased woman, her pose unnatural, her eyes wide with terror, one hand mangled, her face covered in blood—a horrifying sight.

"I'll be gentle, I won't abandon you. That girl looks like she's about to die," the Upper Moon Six said, smiling innocently.

"Let me share my blood with you both. If you're chosen by the Master, you can become demons."

"Life is precious, you know. Cherish it."

He extended a hand towards Gyutaro.

"Come, become demons, like me. Maybe you can even reach the Twelve Kizuki, the Upper Moons?"

The scene shifted back to reality. Gyutaro's head was mostly destroyed.

"I never regretted becoming a demon. No matter how many times I'm reborn, I won't regret it. I don't forgive those who are happy. I will become Gyutaro, the demon who steals happiness."

"Ume, you and I are different. In a better establishment, you would have become a respectable oiran; with parents, a normal daughter; in a good family, a noble lady."

"Isn't that how it should have been? You're naive, easily influenced. It's because I raised you that you became like that."

"Because I taught you to take before being taken from, to demand before being demanded of. You blinded the samurai, but if you'd obeyed him, things might have been different."

"My only attachment… is you."

Gyutaro's vision went black. He found himself in a pitch-black, boundless void.

"Where am I? Is this hell?"

"Brother!" Ume, in human form, appeared behind him. Somehow, in this impenetrable darkness, he could see her clearly.
