Chapter 369: 369. Self-Rescue
"Ah..."
The screams resonated far and wide, causing those already struggling with sleep and tortured by illness to open their numbed eyes. Strangely, listening to these screams brought a curve to their lips.
Aside from the tall boss, who could still put up some resistance, the other two were caught off guard by the swinging wooden sticks hitting them, leaving them powerless. They tried to grab the sticks attacking them, but having no strength made it hard to even walk, let alone aim accurately under intense pain. They grasped at air, only to be met with heavier blows, soon collapsing on the ground.
As they lay on the ground, they couldn't understand—weren't these just a bunch of children? Weren't they infected by the epidemic too? How could they still have such strength, making it hard to breathe with each hit?
After knocking out two people, Dogzi, both shocked and scared, took a deep breath and quickly went to help Brother Liu.
Brother Liu's wooden stick was tightly held by a shadow, while a hand was striking towards Brother Liu's face, scaring Dogzi into raising his stick to smash that hand.
Brother Liu's body had just started to recover, and a slap like that would only worsen him. At this moment, Dogzi's fear vanished, driven only by the desire to save Brother Liu. He used all his strength, almost jumping as he struck.
Then came a "kaba" sound, and the shadow that was tightly gripping the stick instinctively hugged its hand.
"My hand," it said, turning its vicious gaze towards Dogzi. With rage, it no longer cared about the stick's owner, charging at the little brat that broke its hand, stomping heavily.
Even though Dogzi reacted quickly, dodging while smashing down with the stick, he was still kicked in the hip. This happened even after the stick hit the shadow's leg, causing pain; otherwise, the kick would have hit his chest heavily, not just sending him stumbling back and falling, possibly risking his life.
"Dogzi..." Seeing this, Brother Liu's eyes were filled with rage, and he smashed the stick down on the shadow's head.
"Brother Liu, I'm fine, watch out..."
As a cold glint flashed by, Dogzi shouted in alarm, his eyes pricked by the light.
The shadow, having turned to the side and taken a heavy blow without retreating, drew a kitchen knife from its bosom and swung at Brother Liu.
"Ha ha... I was thinking of sparing your lives, but you just don't know what's good for you. Die..." The man swung the knife, a chilling smile emerging from his mouth.
Brother Liu couldn't dodge in time, watching the knife chop towards his head.
"Brother Liu..."
Dogzi endured immense pain and struggled to get up from the ground, but it was already too late, his anguished voice rising...
"I'll kill you..." Just as Dogzi rushed over at this critical moment, the knife suddenly stopped an inch from Brother Liu's neck. The shadow's widened eyes then turned, falling to the ground, the knife dropping beside him, Dogzi's swing missing.
Brother Liu, drenched in cold sweat, stood there, eyes wide in terror, fixated on the arrow tail lodged in the shadow's head.
He had thought he was doomed... saved by someone else.
Brother Liu swiftly turned to look out of the tent, not even having time to respond to Dogzi's concerned voice. The shadow outside the tent filled his eyes with sparkling light.
Dogzi: "..."
Following Brother Liu's gaze, all fear vanished, and he shouted with joy.
"Immortal brother..."
The shout made other children in the tent stop their actions, all looking joyfully at the figure walking inside.
At the same time, the two huddled and beaten men on the ground sighed in relief upon seeing their fallen big brother, blankly staring at the crucial arrow on his body.
"Big brother..." followed by their angry and sorrowful cries.
"I'll kill you all..."
Although the second had been beaten powerless, he suddenly erupted with strength, grabbing a kitchen knife not far from them and charging at the nearest child.
"Little He..."
Just when the second, with a vicious grin, thought he could take a few down with him, he followed in the footsteps of his leader, watching an arrow pierce his forehead, falling heavily to the ground with reluctance.
Meanwhile, the third, witnessing everything firsthand, completely broke down, screaming in terror, shrinking into the ground, not daring to lift his head, followed by violent coughing, trembling all over despite not daring to stick his head out.
Huajin slowly lowered her arm, frowning at the man seemingly coughing out his lungs.
Dogzi, without speaking, swung his stick on the man's head, instantly silencing him, unmoving.
Huajin couldn't help but give Dogzi a long look; this child... is quite something!
Seeing the children trying so hard to save themselves, Huajin couldn't help but admire them. When awake, not one, big or small, stood aside or hid in the corner; they all rushed forward to fight the three men.
It was precisely because of this they could overpower them at the outset, knocking out two by surprise, or they wouldn't have lasted until her arrival.
These children surviving until now in such difficult conditions is truly lucky.
After the men fell, Dogzi looked nervously at the immortal brother.
"Well done," Huajin said, a smile forming beneath her mask, her eyes curving into a crescent line, showing a good mood that was evident as she watched Dogzi's happy face.
Then Huajin pulled each person by hand out of the tent to a clearly designated dumping place about tens of meters away, where many bones and burning traces were visible.
Meanwhile, Brother Liu, Dogzi, and Caogen dragged another out, placing him alongside the two deceased.
"Let's go back," Huajin looked at the one who wasn't dead and said coolly, leaving everything to fate, otherwise, they'd all be burnt together.
Returning to the tattered tent, Huajin was surprised to be met with gazes from the children that didn't disappoint, their pure, bright eyes leaving her momentarily speechless.
"... Hmm, do you still have any medicine left?" Remembering why she came, Huajin asked.
Then she saw Dogzi lift their sleeping straw mat, followed by a wooden board underneath, then a thin stone slab, revealing a cavity about a foot deep and wide. The child dug out from inside two carefully wrapped packets with worn-out oilcloth.
"Immortal brother, we have two packets of medicine left." Dogzi raised the medicine packets in his hand.
"Immortal?" Huajin pointed to herself, unable to hold back a smile.
"Why do you think so of me? I'm not any immortal, just an ordinary person like you." Huajin said softly.
"Big brother is definitely an immortal, we saw big brother disappear just like that." Caogen, being straightforward, responded quickly, his worshipful and hopeful gaze more direct than ever.
