Disaster Apocalypse: Farming, Family, and My Hidden Secret Space

Chapter 399: 399. Based on trust

Moreover, since it's Hua Jin who promised this, even if his son didn't speak, Qin Dagen was prepared to let the little girl and her family in, out of trust for Hua Jin.

Hua Jin may be young, but Qin Dagen understands from her actions and from what his son said that she's a young lady with good judgment, kind-hearted but not a pushover. Since she dared to let this family come, she naturally approves of them.

Furthermore, the little girl has accurately mentioned Hua Jin's name. They couldn't possibly turn them away now, so he just hoped the family would be easy to get along with; otherwise, it would just bring trouble to themselves.

Seeing the temperature rising, it wasn't the right time to delay. Qin Dagen took the lead and began to walk, and Qin Shu followed suit.

The little girl hesitated for a moment and quickly followed, but there was a hint of worry in her eyes, fearing that when they met her family as she'd described, they would be children and back out.

But after all, she was just a child, and the weather was hot. Even if she ran faster, how could she match the speed of two adults? By the time she arrived, she found the two men dumbfounded, staring at the siblings blocked by trees at the entrance.

Her arrival caught the attention of Qin Shu and Qin Dagen.

Qin Dagen: "Are they your family?"

In disbelief, no matter how he tried to guess, he couldn't imagine that the family the little girl spoke of was just a group of children — the oldest one didn't even seem to be older than his second son.

He couldn't fathom how these children walked from the county to Shanggu Town in such heat, especially in these times. Looking at the children again, Qin Dagen's expression added a touch of sympathy.

Qin Shu was also surprised, and previous doubts in his mind finally became clear.

Yes, he realized Hua Jin wouldn't save people for no reason. It turned out they were a group of helpless, pitiful children.

Although they hadn't had much interaction, Qin Shu knew she was a clever girl.

It's evident from hiring them to build the wall that she preserved their dignity and provided more security for Hua Village in the future, ensuring safety.

"Shu, don't just stand there, hurry up and move." If it were a group of adults, Qin Dagen might have hesitated more, but seeing the ragged, frail children and especially noticing the vigilance and unease in their eyes, his heart softened instantly.

These were not like the children he'd seen before, whose eyes were full of scheming.

Hearing this, Qin Shu rushed to help. No wonder the little girl was the only one who came in; the trees blocking the entrance had been carefully selected for their sturdiness by him and his father, requiring great effort to remove — certainly not something the children outside could move.

Feeling the weight of the trees, Qin Shu couldn't help but think of Hua Jin again. She had never entered through the front gate. When he thought of the piles of bricks that appeared overnight in Hua Village, his eyes flashed.

Thankfully, they only needed to remove enough to create an entrance for the children. Although it took some work, it wasn't too exhausting.

Once there was enough space, the little girl quickly ran out. Qin Shu and his father stood inside the gate, refraining from disturbing them and watching the little girl quietly talk to her siblings.

Shortly after, two older children crawled through, bowing deeply before them.

"Uncle, can we really live here?"

Knowing this was Hua Village, Big Liu and Gouzi were very happy. But upon learning their benefactor wasn't there and that the village seemed only to be occupied by a father and son, Big Liu and Gouzi were admittedly anxious.

But thinking their benefactor wouldn't leave this address to harm them, torn between doubt and hope, Big Liu and Gouzi decided to trust human nature for once.

After all, they were just children. If the two men truly had ill intentions, there was no need to act. They certainly didn't need to show a good face to Hua'er; handling a group of children would be easy.

"You can, but did the little girl mention any conditions for coming in?" Though he said this, Qin Dagen had no real hope for them working, since besides two or three older ones, most were too small, with some appearing only five or six years old.

"She did. We can work." Big Liu immediately responded.

"Alright, come in." Qin Dagen nodded, feeling the temperature still rising, and didn't delay any longer, leading them out to help push the wooden cart inside.

When he moved, a few children instinctively took a step back.

"Don't be afraid. It's too hot, we must hurry." Qin Dagen said, pointing to the cart surrounded by a few children and pulling it.

To the children, the heavy wooden cart seemed easily moved, stunning them momentarily before Big Liu urged his siblings to follow quickly.

Then Big Liu, Gouzi, and Grass Root helped block the entrance with trees again. Seeing the trees piled layer upon layer, it seemed impossible to push open from outside unless it was set on fire.

The children remained silent, following the two people ahead silently.

As he walked, Qin Dagen pondered how best to arrange these children.

Leaving them outside in the open was certainly not an option, as the scorching sun would quickly become unbearable, even within an hour.

The Hua family did have space, but without Hua Jin's approval, Qin Dagen couldn't arrange anything. After much thought, he decided to temporarily bring them to his own home. Fortunately, their woodshed wasn't too small when it was built, allowing it to accommodate the children.

Qin Shu watched his father pull the cart directly to their home, slightly surprised, but didn't comment further despite frowning.

Big Liu and Gouzi led their siblings to stand nervously in the yard.

"You'll temporarily stay at my place. However, we don't have much space, so only the woodshed can be spared." Saying this, Qin Dagen opened the woodshed door, stepping aside for the children to see.

If they weren't willing, of course, Qin Dagen wouldn't force them. He guessed these children must have their survival methods to reach Hua Village.

They had no disagreement. Although the woodshed, the space inside was indeed not little. Besides a large amount of firewood, the remaining space was bigger than the broken tents they used to live in before, enough for them all to stay.

Sensing the kindness of this family, Big Liu, Gouzi, Hua'er, and several older children showed expressions of gratitude.

"Thank you, Uncle," Big Liu with his siblings expressed their thanks, albeit still somewhat awkward in tone but better than before.

"No need to mention it. You'll temporarily stay here. When Hua Jin arrives, we'll plan further. Also, you can call me Uncle Qin."

"Uncle Qin," Gouzi, who was among the more clever ones, quickly called out upon hearing.

Qin Dagen nodded: "Alright, it's getting late, you should quickly tidy up, eat, and rest. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me after dark. Just remember the kitchen and main room; I hope you won't enter casually."

What needed saying was important to explain, preventing any unfortunate incidents from occurring later.

Helping them reach here already showed Qin Dagen's kindness. In this time, who wasn't focused on their own affairs? Who would willingly involve themselves in others' business, especially with strangers, even if they're children?

If it weren't based on trust in Hua Jin, even if these children were pitiful, Qin Dagen would have chosen to ignore them.
