Chapter 68: Frieza... Protected Earth Again?
The entire West City was bathed in an eerie purple hue, cast by the massive energy sphere hovering high in the sky, generated by Cell Max.
Wild gales rampaged across the ground, so fierce they sent frog-Levos tumbling helplessly through the air.
Fortunately, a warm hand caught him just in time.
His frog body was far too frail. If the wind had been any stronger, Levos might've been torn to pieces on the spot.
The storm intensified. The very ground beneath them cracked and splintered with each gust.
Levos winced as the wind battered him from all directions, dull pain rippling across his tiny body. He couldn't even open his eyes.
"Levos! I've got everything off of him! What do we do now?" Bulma shouted anxiously.
"Find Goku..."
But before Levos could finish the sentence, his consciousness faded. He passed out.
...
"Damn it! I said, only I get to destroy Earth!"
"GIAO!"
Levos had no idea how long he'd been unconscious. But it was a furious roar, petulant and full of rage, that finally stirred him.
His eyes fluttered open groggily. A wave of warmth surrounded him. It was oddly comforting.
Then he saw it again.
Hovering high above the city was that colossal, glowing violet-black plasma sphere.
And standing against it... a figure clad in golden light.
Levos' eyes widened.
Was that... Lord Frieza?
Protecting Earth?
Again?
What the hell was going on?
Levos turned his head, concern flashing in his eyes as he searched for Bulma.
Just then, a soft hand gently pressed him back down.
"Levos, stop moving!" Bulma's voice rang in his ears, so close and soothing it made him feel safe.
Levos tried turning to look at her, but realized his entire body was wrapped up in something soft and warm.
Everything around him was squishy, warm, and far too comfortable.
Wait... what was going on?
Where the hell was he?
A light, pleasant fragrance tickled his nose. It was intoxicating. His curiosity only deepened.
Had Bulma stuffed him into a pocket?
No, that couldn't be right. Saiyan battle suits didn't have pockets...
Levos prodded his surroundings with a webbed paw. The material felt like cotton candy soft yet springy.
Immediately, Bulma pinched his little hand and scolded, "Levos! Be still! Stop touching things!"
Levos froze.
Then the horrifying realization hit him.
She'd tucked him inside the armor plate of her chest.
There was only a thin layer of tight-fitting combat fabric between them…
He went rigid. His little froggy limbs had nowhere appropriate to rest.
In a panic, he clamped his paws over his eyes.
Nope. Nope nope nope. He couldn't look. He seriously couldn't look.
His brain shut down from embarrassment.
After a long moment, he managed to calm down slightly.
At Bulma's feet lay Ginyu's unconscious body. Android 16 had apparently joined them at some point too.
"Bulma," Levos croaked awkwardly, "you can let me out now. This spot's far enough from the battlefield. It should be safe."
"But..." Bulma hesitated. "Frieza was just looking for Ginyu earlier. If he sees you, we risk blowing your cover."
So that was it.
She'd hidden him right on her body to keep him safe from Frieza.
...But still, why not just use the backpack?
Shaking the thought, Levos asked, "How's the battle going? Any sign of Goku?"
"Still nothing from Goku's group," Bulma replied grimly. "King Cold was already taken down by Cell Max. Only Frieza's still hanging in there."
Then she quickly updated him on everything that had happened.
Apparently, Levos hadn't been unconscious long. While she fled Cell Max's blast radius, Frieza had arrived just in time.
He successfully drew Cell Max's aggro, buying Earth precious moments before destruction.
But now, Frieza was clearly reaching his limit.
His stamina was running dry, while Cell Max's attacks grew fiercer by the second.
"They're headed this way!" Levos warned.
The moment he spoke, a golden figure crashed into the ground beside them at breakneck speed.
BOOM!
The impact cracked the earth open into a massive canyon-like crevice.
Amid the smoke and dust, Frieza slowly rose to his feet.
"My Lord Frieza! Are you hurt?!" Bulma cried out in concern.
Levos instinctively ducked his head back into her armor plate, trying to make his entire frog body disappear.
Frieza's cold eyes scanned them. His gaze paused when it landed on Ginyu's body.
"What happened to Lord Levos?" he asked, voice low.
Bulma sighed. "He tried to help you, but got knocked out by the shockwave during your fight with Cell Max. I brought him back here."
Android 16 added solemnly, "We wanted to assist... but we can't even get close to that battlefield."
"This level of combat is far beyond any of you," Frieza replied coolly. Then, irritation creeping into his voice, he snapped, "Find Ginyu and have him swap bodies with that monster immediately."
"Yes, my lord!" Bulma and 16 chorused.
But just as the words left his mouth...
WHAM!
A towering red figure landed a devastating kick, sending Frieza flying across the sky.
BOOM!
The shockwave blew Bulma, 16, and Levos away in all directions.
Thankfully, Cell Max didn't see them as his primary targets, so they narrowly escaped death.
Frieza climbed out of a crater, spitting a mix of blood and dirt.
He wiped the filth from his face and glared up at the monster above.
"You've truly enraged me now," he said, grinning coldly.
Then he charged back at Cell Max.
The battle resumed fierce and chaotic.
Levos, from their new hiding spot, peeked his head out just enough to see the clash.
The sheer power of Cell Max was staggering.
Even the original Perfect Cell created by Dr. Gero, at his peak, was nowhere near this level.
If Cell Max weren't so mindless, driven only by raw instinct, Frieza might not have lasted this long at all.
Watching Frieza fight with every ounce of strength he had...
Even Levos had to admit, "Frieza really is something else."
He could've left Earth to its fate.
After all, his race could survive in space. Planetary destruction was meaningless to him.
But no Frieza was too prideful. Too obsessed with doing things on his own terms.
If he said he'd destroy Earth, then no one else was allowed to beat him to it.
That level of pride was almost admirable.
Still, Levos frowned.
The battle had been raging for so long. Where was Goku?
Why hadn't any of the others shown up?
Right now, Earth's survival was resting entirely on Frieza's shoulders.
"Bulma," he said grimly. "We need to find Goku. Frieza can't last much longer..."
Bulma nodded, her expression just as serious.
Cell Max was simply too powerful.
If Frieza fell... Earth would be wiped out in the blink of an eye.
