Chapter 415: Chapter 415: The Missing Missiles
One ship after another, floating adrift on the ocean's surface, and all other vessels capable of floating were enveloped by a dense, seemingly endless fog, as if swallowed into an apocalyptic world.
The fog was thick and sticky, swallowing all light, dyeing the sky and the sea into a chaotic grey.
From the perspective of the aliens hiding inside these ships, they could see nothing of their surroundings. Even though all the ships were linked together to avoid separation, everything slowly disappeared under their watchful eyes in the oppressive, dense fog.
Massive hulls, towering masts, and sharp gun barrels—all were submerged in the sea of fog, as if they had never existed. Even the lights and signals on the ships were devoured by the fog, unable to penetrate its thick barrier.
The air itself seemed to solidify, with only the sound of the moving fog echoing like the tolling of bells at the apocalypse.
Hidden inside, unaffected by the external conditions, the aliens could only see a blank whiteness; even the nearest decks and the cabin walls were shrouded in the same blinding fog.
Meanwhile, a deadly silence prevailed, effectively depriving the aliens of all senses, leaving them in the cabin, staring blindly like fools.
On a vast aircraft carrier, the bridge doubled as a combat command center.
A group of individuals stood inside, looking out at the encompassing white fog, their expressions grim, their aura chilling the room slightly.
The President of the Free Nation turned to the general beside him. Although he was the strongest of his kind, able to resist being devoured by others of his species and instead able to devour any of them, he still delegated all detailed tasks to the professional military personnel beside him.
In front of the group were various sensors and electronic devices, with personnel seated and continuously operating them.
"Any response from the radar systems?" the alien general, dressed in a uniform, asked.
The radar system, one of the fleet's main monitoring and identification tools, used electromagnetic waves to detect objects around it, providing data such as position, speed, direction, and size, or identifying potential threats.
Just after the question was posed, someone responded,
"Report, no response."
"What about the surrounding ships?"
"Report, according to the radar, they have all disappeared!"
The answers not only darkened the expressions of the President and other leaders behind him but also shook the alien general.
What was assumed to be just ordinary fog turned out to be as described by humans; its strange energy could block and devour everything. If even hypothetical monsters couldn't be detected, the entire fleet was essentially blind and helpless in this environment.
"What about the infrared detection systems?" the alien general asked sternly, staring out at the thick fog.
The fleet wasn't solely dependent on radar; if the radar failed, there was still the infrared detection system, which could detect infrared radiation emitted by targets, especially useful at night or in poor weather conditions.
If there really were unknown creatures outside, there should be some corresponding feedback.
To the alien general's dismay, the report was negative.
"Report, the infrared detection system has no feedback!"
The alien general took a deep breath, looked toward the electronic equipment station, and continued,
"What about the optical countermeasure systems?"
This system used visible light and infrared cameras to monitor the surroundings. He didn't expect miracles but hoped it would at least ensure the fleet wasn't completely blind to any incoming threats.
"Report! All optical countermeasure systems have failed."
Still not giving up, the alien general turned his head to another electronic station and continued,
"Any news from the sonar systems yet?"
Sonar, different from the previously mentioned systems, was primarily used for detecting and identifying underwater targets. It could detect acoustic signals underwater, helping the fleet recognize potential underwater threats.
The alien general was visibly anxious, his fingers tapping nervously on his skin as he awaited the reply. Since nothing was detected above water, perhaps something would be detected below?
Disappointingly, the sonar also failed to provide any feedback.
"Report! Sonar systems have not detected any suspicious targets."
In such an apocalyptic environment, receiving no signals meant that the dangers lurking within the fog remained undetected.
This situation was undoubtedly perilous. The alien general stole a glance at the President of the Free Nation standing next to him, emitting a dangerous aura, and gritted his teeth,
"Since all methods are useless, let's start aerial reconnaissance.
Deploy all unmanned warning aircraft; we must get a report on the situation outside no matter what."
As the alien general's orders were issued, people began to mobilize, preparing to deploy all unmanned warning and reconnaissance aircraft to scout the area.
The large cabin buzzed with activity as drone after drone, including AWACS and other unmanned aircraft, took off one by one, disappearing into the dense fog outside.
Regrettably, these drones all returned with news of their disappearance, the control screens showing nothing but emptiness.
Now,
even the alien general was at a loss, having exhausted all available means. Even radio communications failed, leaving them forced to wait blindly in the cabin, responding only when and if they detected any disturbance from outside.
"So we are essentially blind? We can't see anything, and we won't know if danger comes?" the President asked the silent alien general.
The general nodded silently in response, "Sir, from the current situation, it is indeed as you say."
The President of the Free Nation looked expressionless as he gazed into the thick fog outside, saying gravely,
"Fire a test salvo. I need to know the situation with the rest of the fleet."
Upon hearing this, the alien general nodded silently and began organizing the orders.
Commands cascaded down through the ranks, and all types of guns and weapons were prepared, pointing towards the sky.
Once the order was confirmed, the massive aircraft carrier unleashed its fury, its cannons roaring into the fog outside.
But to the despair of the President, the alien general, and everyone else in the cabin, the continuous cannon fire brought back no response, making them feel as if they were the last ones left in the world, with all other ships possibly devoured.
---
On land, the moving masses pursued the direction of the dissipating fog, the front of the crowd forming an arrowhead.
The arrowhead led the people onward; among those at the front, mostly human high-rankers and leaders, was Dino Lebrun. He watched the direction in which the fog continued to retreat and then turned to an elderly man beside him.
"Mr. Ashley, the savior fog seems to be moving toward the coastline. Do you know something about this?"
Ashley, who had donned a jacket against the decreasing temperature as he moved with the fog, listened to Dino Lebrun's question and adjusted his collar against the chill that accompanied the fog's retreat.
"I'm not certain, but I believe that the god who saved us will not abandon us."
Dino Lebrun silently watched, then after a moment, asked,
"Why?"
Pausing, Dino Lebrun looked at Ashley with a wry smile.
"Mr. Ashley, I know you are among the smartest of us humans. Can you share your thoughts with me? Otherwise, we'll only overthink."
Hearing this, Ashley turned back to look at the endless crowd behind him, which seemed to spread unease even though he had managed to bring back a bit of calm earlier. Now, it seemed insufficient.
"You said that after being enveloped by the fog, you were directly transported here to live and thrive. I think the savior fog might be composed of different spaces."
"So you couldn't see anything around you, and people next to you just disappeared out of nowhere."
Dino Lebrun didn't quite grasp the old man's words, his brows involuntarily furrowing.
"That would explain why the continuously fired missiles also disappeared." Ashley added.
Dino Lebrun's pupils dilated, realizing that might indeed be the case. They had been transported here, and had also tried to find those missing missiles within a limited area because if the buildings weren't destroyed by bombings, then the missiles hadn't detonated but were stacked somewhere.
They had desperately searched for these missiles, knowing that possessing them could give them a chance to win the war despite the disparity in numbers between humans and aliens.
Unfortunately, despite a full-scale search, they never found any trace of the missiles, as if they had vanished into thin air.
"You mean?" Dino Lebrun inhaled sharply, associating Ashley's words with those missing missiles.
"Hmm." Ashley seemed to know what Dino Lebrun was about to say, maintaining his calm.
"If you haven't disappeared, and the buildings haven't disappeared, then those missiles must still exist somewhere, we just don't know where God has hidden them."
Ashley looked toward the direction where the fog continued to retreat: "I believe God will not abandon us humans. But since the fog is disappearing, always moving toward the coastline, I think this must be a direction God is showing us."
With a heavy breath, Ashley continued: "The aliens are currently all at sea, and we have been expelled by them. Combined with those missing missiles, He might be showing us something."
This revelation stunned those present and caused a ripple of excitement among the high-ranking officials listening to Ashley. The words spread by word of mouth through the dense crowd, sparking a significant stir.
Dino Lebrun finally caught up with the smart men's train of thought, feeling as if all his blocked thoughts had suddenly cleared.
"You're right, Ashley!" he said, invigorated as he walked along.
"God will not abandon us humans."
Ashley gave him a glance but said nothing, just kept walking. He remembered the young people still in the hands of the aliens.
Diobia, noticing Ashley's mood shift, offered some consolation.
"Compared to the previous
outcome, this result is already very good."
Hearing this, Ashley sighed: "Indeed, it is almost perfect. I was overthinking. Don't worry, I'm not overthinking now; I just wonder why we didn't realize this sooner."
Diobia chuckled: "You old man, even if you had realized it, what could you have done? Our kind was already thoroughly infiltrated. Otherwise, we wouldn't be left with so few numbers. Besides, you couldn't have seen their true nature either."
Ashley resigned himself, wrapping his coat tighter around him, looking at his old friend and colleague: "Are you here to criticize me?"
"Not at all." Diobia shrugged, looking around, including the endless crowd behind them that resembled an ant colony, and pointed up at the sky.
"I mean to say, it's getting dark."
Ashley followed Diobia's gesture and looked up.
At some point, as the fog continued to dissipate, the once bright sky had slowly darkened, like a vast curtain hanging overhead.
"Yes, it's getting dark." Ashley remarked.
As his words fell, the sky was rapidly covered in darkness, fully enveloping it.
The crowd, though restless, remained stable under the command of the leaders, and lights began to flicker on.
These were the lights of phones and other devices, which Ashley and Diobia also took out to light the way ahead. The lights spread among the crowd like an infection, stretching to the horizon and eventually merging into a whole.
For a moment, the entire land was lit up with a brilliant display of lights, a beautiful sight to behold.
In the sky.
York, having flown from the yacht into the air, stood above watching the lights ignite one by one, a slight smile on his lips.
It was indeed a beautiful scene.
"It's beautiful, Uncle York!" Alyssa, standing beside him, blinked her eyes as if she had seen a captivating scene, cheering.
"Yes." York looked at the elderly leading the crowd below and responded before turning his gaze to the pitch-black sea.
"It's time to start the fireworks, Alyssa."
